The primary reason (hopefully) for coming here is doing our civic duty, Jury Duty. As mentioned in other reviews this is probably as pleasant as it's gonna get so that is good. The accommodations are pretty good - coffee, vending machines, and a large lobby/waiting area. There are three rooms that can fit 50+ people each with a TV showing a different program so if you don't want to watch HGTV you can move to the next room and watch ESPN or the last room and watch CNN. Unfortunately it's still Jury Duty. It is long and tedious. You wait, and wait and wait so absolutely remember to bring your book, phone + charger or something or you will be beyond bored. I did learn a lot about the process and how important it is - that is how in other countries you may not be able to be judged by your peers and a small-ish matter. Also as boring and long as the process is, it is interesting seeing how it all goes, how the prosecution and defense profile you, and the questions they ask. Also besides maybe a movie theater you'll never see so many people in one place being absolutely quiet. A bittersweet necessity that is moreso bitter. Like the introduction administrator will tell you, make the most of it if you are called.

If you're lucky and get one of the carousels in the Computer Lounge, you'll have two electrical sockets for your devices.

Wow! The Essex County Veterans Courthouse has really transformed since the last time I served as a juror. The area looks bright and clean, and less sterile and depressing. There are colorful displays on the walls with MLK Jr. and JFK., with inspiring blurbs about civic duty and freedom, as well as displays about the County of Essex. Last time I reported here, I think there was one, sad poster on the wall. Also, they improved the signage for jurors, eliminating any confusion about where to go and how to get to the JMO and juror waiting area. The staff behind the desk were friendly. The lady who scanned my badge was nice. Then they will direct you on where to go. Assembly Room A and B are for Day One jurors; Assembly Room C and the open area are where jurors go for Day Two. There is free WiFi and a computer lounge (the carousels are a hot commodity FYI). There is better furniture in the rooms and lounges, comfortable with good back support. I was glad there was good seating because jurors sit there for a while. You can also get unlimited coffee and tea in the morning until 11:30am. Essex JMO also validates parking tickets for jurors. Your best bet is to validate your ticket once you check-in in the morning and during lunch if you decide to leave.

But here I am - on my day off , in the rain on Halloween in downtown Newark 8:30am in the morning. Smh So there is no free parking. If you drive in- you have to pay to park in one of the parking lots . There is a parking lot in front of the court building . Minimum is $6 and max is $15 . You walk in - go thru security and then you can proceed to the courtroom assigned to you . Bathrooms located . They are very strict on courtroom rules so abide. Most people don't listen and sometimes I found it also hard to hear the staff. Staff seems annoyed and burnt out - not mean but tone of voice you can tell they rather not be there. If you can turn off your cell phones , sit in rows not marked for police or handicap , not eat or drink in courtroom - then you are good . You can't even have the phones out- they have to be put away . It amazing how many people don't pay attention . My time was at 8:30am ... but judge didn't come out until 9:30am. 8:30-9:30am was basically waiting, doing roll call, and talking to prosecutor around 9:15am. You pretty much talk to prosecutor first and discuss whether you want to plead guilt or not guilty. Once you discuss with prosecutor- then you sit again- packed like sardines in the rows and wait for judge to call you Luckily I was like the 5th person called and thankfully I was able to plead my case and support with documentation- and thankfully the judge dismissed my case . The judge and the judgement was the only positive thing for me . That is why I have any stars at all. I was out before 10am Hopefully this info can help someone ...

Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building, Louis J. Lefkowitz State Office Building, US Court of International Trade, Jacob K. Javits Federal Building and Surrogate's Court of New York County. The Supreme Court building is just like you may have seen on TV or in movies*, tall Corinthian columns with a short flight of stairs leading up to the front entrance. Architect Guy Lowell won the contest for design on the building in 1913, its exterior modeled after a Roman temple, and work started 1919, with initial intent to be a circular building. Due to WWI, the plans downsized to a smaller hexagonal structure with a rotunda, and completed in 1927. The court is open to the public 9am-5pm when there are cases proceeding and you are able to sit in, though I have not personally done this before. A security scan/metal detector is required when entering the building. Free tours are available to those interested in learning more about the judicial system, more info available here: https://ww2.nycourts.gov/courts/1jd/supctmanh/Court_tours2.shtml A main point of interest inside is the circular wall mural "Law Through the Ages" in the rotunda, designed by Italian artist Attilio Pusterla and painted between 1934 and 1936. It's divided into six sections depicting pairs of historical figures important to the history of Western law: Assyrian / Egyptian, Hebraic / Persian, Greek / Roman, Byzantine / Frankish, English / early colonial, with the final section portraying George Washington / Abraham Lincoln. Above the seated figures are portraits of six lawgivers: Hammurabi, Moses, Solon, Justinian, Blackstone and John Marshall. *These include most famously: - Miracle on 34th Street (1947) - 12 Angry Men (1957) - The Godfather (1972) - Goodfellas (1990) - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) - Night Court, television series - Law & Order and its many spinoffs - Cagney & Lacey - Damages - Blue Bloods - Suits, television series

Renovated in the 70s, it remains a beautiful museum quality structure, still used in part by the Superior Court and it's Appellate Division. While we waited for oral arguments to begin, we stood in the third floor hallway outside the courtroom and had perfect views of the domed and muraled ceiling as well as the smaller historic paintings on the high arching walls. Marble from Maine on stairways, floors and balastrades; and polished brass light fixtures casting their glow adding to the ambiance, it was easy to slide back in time to when civic pride built such monuments to honor the achievements of that Golden Age. After such enjoyment the quality of our legal arguments almost seemed secondary to our reason for being here, yet the day went well for us. The three judge panel appeared attentive to the facts and logic of our cause, and asked the right questions to clarify our position, while also letting us know where we went astray. All in all, a fine, if unexpectedly wonderful day.

Who loves getting called in for jury duty? Probably nobody. The great state of New Jersey can call…read moreon residents every three years, and I was lucky enough to have been called three and a half years ago. I went through the process and was chosen as juror #7 for a civil case, which just so happened to settle that same day before we even went to trial. So after one day, I was done. I didn't have to do anything. I just sat in a lot of different seats. Fast forward to last month. I received another summons in the mail, that unmistakable green rectangle sandwiched in between a magazine and the 89th piece of mail from another car insurance company assuring me they can, without question, offer me the lowest rate in the state. Much the same as the first time, I found myself in Jury Management with 150+ other people just as "excited" as me to be here. I brought my laptop with me; I was determined to get work done as I expected to sit here most of the day. I got there early enough to snag a seat at a table and be lulled into productivity with the constant sound of HGTV in the background. 10:50am - the first case. I am the seventh person called. Goodbye, productivity. Time to really earn the $5 I'd be getting in a few weeks. I'm not sure when this courthouse was built, but it reminds of of my elementary school. Solid shiny brick with a gray/tan color scheme throughout, old wood everything, with the retro signage fonts and numbers/letters unchanged since the day this building was completed. Everything about it seems official, and there's a procedure for everything. Walking up the stairs (I'm not waiting for the elevators with 100 other people) I thought about all of these things and wondered what the case might be. Packed in, we were told this was a criminal case that would last 3 weeks. It took several hours to go through all of the people with excuses for not being able to serve. Some were legit, some not so much. In any case, I had no excuse, so I just sat there. After that process, I was the 7th person called up to speak with the judge and the attorneys and answer the questions they had. Without any red flags, I was chosen as juror #4. The selection process took the rest of the day, and all of the following day. People around me were switched in and out, challenged and dismissed, but I was cemented to that seat. Before long, the process was complete, and I was officially sworn in as juror #4, along with 15 other Hudson County residents. Over the course of the next three weeks I became very familiar with this courthouse. I was there almost every single day. I heard testimony. I saw evidence. I saw very detailed photos. I saw raw emotion in the friends and family sitting and watching, reliving a tragedy from three years ago. In all of this, I sat in my chair with a straight face, listening, learning, and never jumping to any conclusions. As instructed, I did not speak with anyone about the case. I did no research. I internalized everything I saw, heard, and thought about it for three weeks. This was physically and emotionally exhausting. Despite that, I felt incredibly lucky to have been chosen. I, along with 11 others (after selection of four alternates) were solely responsible for the fate of the case. Real people, real life, real actions, real consequences. I never doubted the reality of the case, but being in the jury box offered a new perspective that was extraordinarily humbling. Why am I telling you this? The building is old. It's hot in the winter, and even hotter in the summer. You need to go through metal detectors each time you walk in. Jury management is a pretty boring room. Jury duty takes takes you away from your normal life. You're not in control of anything. Despite all of that, as they will undoubtedly tell you in jury management, it's an honor to be able to do this. I learned a lot being here for three weeks. The case was tough, but I don't second guess our verdict. Because of our decision, someone is going to prison for what may very well be the rest of their lives, and a family can now rest a little easier knowing justice has been served. I don't mean for this review to sound like an infomercial for government work or jury duty. It's not. Being called for jury duty isn't the worst thing in the world. If you are selected, and can serve, it will likely be an experience that will stick with your for the rest of your life.

The clerk at the desk who takes the dispute submissions (and ticket payments) wasn't very nice or welcoming. So I had my worries. Afterwards I also didn't receive my confirmation via email as she promised until I submitted a secondary email request. So expect a poor experience in that particular office. The saving grace was when I came on my court date. The security guard at the entrance was very nice and welcoming. He greeted me with a "Hello my brother," and politely went through the screening process. This positivity continued with the court guards who openly and pleasantly answered anyone's questions. Then what put it over the top was the pleasant and respectful way that Judge Irwin Rosen treated the defendants. He was in no way intimidating or skewed to be on the side of the parking officers. He was impartial and fairly evaluated every case based on the defendants' testimony and evidence. He clearly wasn't "out to stick people with as many tickets as possible" like the meter maids are. I presented my case, showed my evidence of pictures of the street signs (they MUST BE PRINTED) and showed that the ticket was not issued in accordance with the municipal code (research the violation code to help your case). He fairly weighed the testimony and evidence then judged in my favor and dismissed the ticket. My court time was at 1pm and I was out by 1:40pm. I couldn't ask for a better turnout. The court security and Judge Rosen are excellent. Keep up the great work!
