I had a great experience with Alex at Value Auto Repair. I originally reached out through Yelp, and he was responsive and answered all of my questions. His pricing was significantly better than what the dealership quoted me, but what really stood out wasn't just the price--it was his honesty. I came in with a humming noise that I believed was a bad wheel bearing but was unsure. Alex was upfront from the beginning after making the same diagnosis and even encouraged me to get quotes from other mechanics if it made me feel more comfortable so I could make sure I was getting a fair deal. That kind of confidence and transparency is hard to find. When I arrived, he was able to get my car in within about 30 minutes to diagnose it. While the part was being delivered, I went to lunch, and once I came back, he had the wheel bearing replaced in about 45 minutes. Before I left, he took the time to show me both the old and new wheel bearings, explaining how they worked and letting me hear and feel the difference. I really appreciated him taking the time to educate me instead of just handing me a bill. One thing I noticed while I was waiting was how many customers came in who clearly knew Alex. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to see him, several appeared to be repeat customers, and there was an obvious level of trust between them. After my own experience, I completely understand why. Mike inspected it and called me right away with a serious finding: the left rear brake caliper bolts were missing, and the right front brake caliper bolts were loose from the previous brake job. This was especially concerning because I had already returned to the original shop and been told the vehicle was fine. This issue could have caused the brakes to seize, putting both my safety and my vehicle at serious risk. These guys saved me $1,000…read more I originally brought my car to another shop, (we will call them Slimy Auto Repair or SAR), because the engine was misfiring. Diagnosis was the spark plugs and an arching coil. Price estimate was $1,600 ON A 2013 BASE MODEL KIA SOUL!!! I called SAR to ask them how they came up with that estimate, only to be met with "Oh we don't set the prices so idk." I sent this estimate to North Park Auto, who called me back to tell me they could do the same job for $664. So I called a tow truck to take my car from SAR to North Park Auto. Tow truck ready, SAR then tried to tell me they could do it for $860. THE PRICE SUDDENLY DROPPED IN HALF WHEN I WAS READY TO TAKE MY CAR AWAY. Out of principle, I got my car the HECK out of there. SAR was my go-to spot before this. Towed my car to North Park Auto, who got the job done in less than an hour (SAR wanted to charge me for over 2 hours of labor). Ended up paying $663. While some people are able to fix these things themselves, I am not, and I greatly appreciate their honesty. They broke down the cost of the parts AS WELL as the labor, and I was satisfied (especially comparatively). Sam, the woman who worked with me at North Park Auto, went out of her way to look at my estimate from SAR and have their techs assess it. She did not have to do that. On 4/14 I brought in an Escalade after replacing the rear brakes because it started throwing multiple warning lights, even though the ABS sensor and brakes were already replaced. I understand newer vehicle technology can sometimes cause glitches even with simple repairs, so I trusted they'd be able to diagnose and fix it. They charged a $130 diagnostic fee, which I was completely fine with. The next day, they said they needed to reset the computer for $390. Since I had already paid for the diagnostic and was told it would go toward the repair, I agreed. The following day, I was told they couldn't reset it and that I'd need a new module for $3,468.54. I declined and decided to get a second opinion from our regular mechanic. I still paid the $390 plus a $13.65 service charge, which I later found out was a credit card fee. The next day, I took the vehicle to our regular mechanic. Within 2 hours, they cleared the stored codes and the vehicle was ready, total cost: $120. No waiting days, no module replacement, and no unnecessary upsell. I waited a couple of weeks before writing this review to make sure the issue didn't come back, and also spoke with Barry to see if anything could be done about the $403.65 I paid. I felt it was unfair to be charged for a service that ultimately wasn't completed. I would've been completely fine just paying the $130 diagnostic fee. Unfortunately, he declined, stating the charge was for their time. I understand time was spent, but from a business standpoint, I wouldn't feel right charging a client for a repair that wasn't successfully completed, especially when the vehicle left in the same condition it arrived. Because of this experience, I wouldn't return or recommend this shop to others. I think it's important for people to know that you may end up paying for work that doesn't actually resolve the issue.
