This was an optional excursion on our recent South American tour. A visit to a gaucho ranch to learn about the ins and outs. However there wasn't much in terms of learning about the lives of gauchos or of a working ranch. The ranch is owned and family operated. We were greeted by the matriarch's son who is running the ranch. We were treated to an empanada and a cold alcoholic beverage. From there we toured the old ranch turned into a small museum. Then the carriage wagon ride - this was a waste of time. The wagon holds eight passengers. There's no narrative. As it had rained a few days ago we were in the land of mosquitoes. Given the opportunity I would skip this. It's a short ride to nowhere. Then it's lunchtime. We went into the dining hall. The gauchos begin serving. Started off with a grilled sausage. Salty. Then a blood sausage. From there it's meat. Most of it medium to well done. I asked for medium rare. The gaucho brings one slice of medium rare. That's it. Besides beef there's also grilled chicken. Salty. Dessert was almond ice cream. Next it's a show. Folk music. And tango dancers. And a bolo performance - that was the highlight. After dessert we piled outside to the fairgrounds where the horses are. The gauchos gallop around herding the horses with help of the Australian sheepdogs. The horses are trained to come up close to the viewing area where you can take pictures of them. The finale - three gauchos race their horses up attempting to jostle little rings that are strung. This happens 1/2 dozen times. On our way back to our motor coach we 're treated to a deep fried empanada and a local drink, the mate. Brewed with herbs and sugar. Later on our tour as we continued on to Iguazu Falls and Brazil, the six of us kept talking about the deep fried empanada we had. It made an impression on us. read more

What a fun experience...well worth the time to get there from Buenos Aires. We had the most delicious empanadas upon arrival then a tour of the old house and chapel...now a museum. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. The carriage ride is fun but the gaucho show is incredible! And the dinner was fantastic, served to us by the friendly gauchos. During the meal we had a fun display of tango dancing and a bolo demonstration. Excellence entertainment! And...the good wine flows freely! There is also a nice gift shop on the premises. This was the most disappointing experience in all of Buenos Aires. The ranch is 2 1/2 hours out of the city and very close to the highway. You get to horseback ride for 15 minutes in a small circle, the horses have this gig down so you dont have to direct them in any way and they dont respond to commands. The museum is tiny, took 15 minutes total. Spent an hour waiting for lunch, which was awful and saw a very mediocre gaucho and folk show. It was interesting to see a different side to Buenos Aires and the Buenos Aires province. I have heard from other tourists that there are several good gaucho tours this was just not one of them. read more

Estancia Santa Susana is a "typical" Gaucho ranch. Its basically a ranch much like the North American Cowboys of the wild west with a French/Spanish twist. We got to watch gaucho games called "Corrida de Sortija". Horseback or carriage rides, dancing, singing, and seeing the museum. Then we got to much down on empanadas, different types of grilled meats,and to wash it all down you had options of wine, water, etc... Summery: Do it! It was a lot of fun. It was just like being in the wild wild west without being able to understand everything being said...(I don't speak Spanish very well.) But I'd do it again if I could ever afford to bring my children down. read more

The food here is only part of the attraction. Arrive before lunch and you can ride horses, ride in a horse-drawn wagon around the ranch, and visit a restored house decorated in 1940's style. Lunch was several types of sausage followed by pork, chicken and several types of beef. More than ample side dishes and salads. Then there's a show with tango and several other performances. Finally you can watch the gauchos do some trick riding. A great day trip outside of Buenos Aires. read more
