If you like eating precious metals, and want something new to try, you should triagem (try a gem)…read more They taste delicious. This train station is lovely and new, in a very economically underprivileged part of Rio, not too far north of the famous Maracana stadium, and in one of my absolute fave neighborhoods in the "Rocha" district. Sadly, this rail line is being extended and will demolish the Vila Mimosa just down the road, which is the red light district of Rio. I hope that doesn't actually happen. This is review #2,014 for a good reason. We came upon it by accident in the summer of 2014. We came for the World Cup, so to speak. We found this area while driving around Rio in a rental car that a fellow Yelper helped us to get. It's not the stadium itself which earns the 5-star, although it is also a 5-star facility as far as Rio stations go. It's what lurks behind it... A long road goes past the stadium into a housing project known as Bairro Carioca, which was basically when a shanty town favela was knocked down, and rebuilt into sustainable, environmentally friendly housing, and then given to the people of the favela, essentially for free, and with very low-rent. It's an absolutely magical idea that has brought great comfort and hope and a better life to thousands in this neighborhood. It is the future for Brazil and other developing countries, in my opinion. What's more, they have beautiful murals on the walls. They are welcoming to "rich foreigners which I suppose we were, in our fancy SP rental car. And they have absolutely amazing street food. The girl I came to Brazil with (and came in Brazil with, and came in, in Brazil, oh wait, ignore this part, sorry) and I both agree that hanging out at Triagem and in Bairro Carioca is more fun than any of the fancy beach towns like Ipanema and Copacabana. It's the real Brasil, and we love it. And we also love Menage-a-triagems just down the road from here, with girls from Porto Alegre in the South of Brasil, but that's another story, for another day.
