For being one of the cheapest options on the island, the proportions were huge. The flavor of the burritos was far from lacking as well. Normally the food is great & the owner is very nice. This time the pico de Gallo was very peppery from the red seasoning being over used & the tacos carne asada was way over cooked (carne asada steak was hard to chew). The waitress was nice but did cause is of eating all the beans & dice. I explained that they were on the tacos we did not eat, which she could see. The owner came & asked us what the issue was, which I nicely explained it to him. He IMMEDIATELY got very rude! I do not know if he was having a bad day or what. He yelled "You don't pay for anything! You leave and never come back!"! When I told the waitress I was finishing my review then leaving she accused us of "You guys always have a problem with our food!". I asked when we last came in & what we order, she got it majorly wrong then made excuses. This was such an awful experience that we will not be back,!! The waitress said the owner was a jerkto us because she prior told him, when she took the food back, that "You guys always have a problem with the food". That was extremely false info because not only have we not been there in about 4 months (the waitress said last summer was when we were there last) but she also said we also get nachos. We both get mushrooms, I last got the seafood chinichanga & my husband got a huge burrito. We get mushrooms only 99.9% of the time. I probably got rude after she came back accusing us of "usually ordering the pico without the red seasoning & always having issues with the food" because those lies or her accusing me of doing something that someone else did, did really upset me! Best enchiladas on Whidbey island. Their rice and beans are great and I love the generous portion of chips and salsa they provide with every order. My family of San Diego transplants love Esteban's Mexican Restaurant! Best Mexican food we've had this far north of San Diego and Mexico. Esteban's is a super casual, old-school kinda Mexican joint. I recommend wearing pants with an elastic waist band so you can fully indulge in the food The menu is extensive. I stick with the combo plates, but my husband and the rest of his family mostly order the carne asada plate. Beer is on tap (including Mexican options!) and there are other options, like margaritas. I can't speak to how good the margaritas are, since I haven't had any alcohol there. Definitely worth a drive to Oak Harbor. 10/10. read more

Our favorite Mexican restaurant in Oak Harbor! There are a couple of great servers, but we ended up with the grumpy old guy tonight!! How disappointing, he brought our drinks and then the meals, but that was it.. No follow up, no water, no container for left overs and no check.. He didn't even come by the table for us to wave him down.. We had to go to the counter to pay the bill because he never brought a check! It's time for him to retire! The interior looks like a typical Mexican restaurant, which is not bad, since it is a Mexican restaurant. The serice is friendly and attentive, the kitchen works fast, and the portions are enormous. This is a rough review. This was my favorite Mexican place around. I loved the mushroom app. The last few times we've ordered it's been absolutely disgusting to the point I tossed it and made a sandwich. One of the times we definitely specified I was allergic to onions (not a fun allergy when you love fajitas) and to please get extra peppers and we would be willing to pay extra. They added onions and when we called they told us we were lying and my husband had to bring the food back as proof. The receipt even said NO onions. Mexican was the request for the evening and after seeing the not-so-stellar reviews for the intended local spot I knew I had to rely on Yelp for this out of towner to get a good meal. The food was overall, hmm what's the word, "safe". It was fairly bland and the sauces lacked the extra push that it essential in Mexican cooking. Instead we ended up with mediocre sauces, bland bean based dishes and one of the most disappointing tamales I've ever eaten. That being said, nothing was bad it just wasn't great either. It was actually probably perfect in some ways as we were dining with one person who had never tried Mexican food before and so the "safety" of the dishes ended up being a bit of a virtue. On a more positive note, the service was really wonderful. I mean absolutely sweet and attentive and helpful. The waitress even returned at the end of the meal twice to be sure we didn't mistakenly leave her too much money. That was a REALLY shocking experience for a Philly based gal. Also the salsa was good and the guacamole was actually the best thing on the table. It was chunky and fresh and wonderful. I would say go for the drinks and guac but the margaritas were very weak and not very good so maybe just go for the phenomenal service and the guac. Also important to note is that I didn't tell our waitress that we were celebrating a birthday at the table but as soon as she overheard us talking about it she insisted we sing happy birthday and have the delicious fried ice cream. The service was ok. Seated immediately but I think there was only 2 other tables in the restaurant. The got the kids food in fast as requested. But the cooks didn't seem to know the menu and when ordering off the vegetarian section they gave me the wrong item and argued about it. The taste wasn't good. Especially since we've all managed to get stomach bugs within 24 hours of eating there. Let's start with saying how difficult it is to find even mediocre Mexican food in Washington, let alone a small town like Oak Harbor. With that said, this place is really good. The first time I came here, I wasn't too impressed with the tacos, given that they use pre-fabricated taco shells...ishck. But I came here last night and ordered two enchiladas, one beef, one chicken. They were surprisingly really good, especially the shredded beef. The service is really great there, but my experience may have been better given that my mom comes here every single Friday and all of the servers know her by name so they all came up at different times to ask how we were doing. The entire staff is friendly and genuine. Oh, and the chips and salsa were much better than I expected. So, I guess what it comes down to is this. If you ever find yourself up the Puget Sound in a little podunk town and have a craving for good Mexican food, hit Estaban's up. I've been coming to estabans restaurant since I was a child, I always loved the enchiladas with rice and beans! As I got older I explored more of their menu. I love their shrimp ceviche, appetizers, and salsas! The tamales are delicious as is the carne asada. I really can't pick a favorite dish but those are a few of mine lol read more

I had to run to town and as I was leaving around 1 pm I thought I'd rather have something good besides a sandwich so went tonEstebans. Decided on a taco salad and they had it ready in under five minutes. Along with a paper bag full of fresh chips and two large containers of salsa. Got home and they had large dollops of guacamole and sour cream with a small wax paper over it so it doesn't get pressed out. Delicious. And the taco bowl that they make is like a dessert to me. Ten mile drive home it was still warm and the bowl was very crisp. Can't wait for them to open like before so I can also enjoy one of their house made Cadillac Margaritas. Thanks you guys. My wife and some friends stopped in last Friday for dinner. The waitress we had had a hard time with our orders. In fact, she got 3 of four wrong. Now for the good part. When we identified the problems they were all fixed and the waiter who was supposed to serving us (I'm sorry I just can't remember his name) came over and apologised for the bad service we had received and paid for our meal. He went WAY above and beyond to make it right and to see that we had a pleasant time. As always the food was well prepared and delicious. For some reason, Esteban's Mexican Restaurant plays second fiddle to the only other Mexican restaurant in Oak Harbor. Dollars to donuts, I have received a better dining experience at Esteban's Mexican Restaurant than El Caz, yet my peers still through out the other place first. Esteban's Mexican Restaurant meals always start off with a generous and heaping serving of hot crispy chips and salsa. Their menu is very impressive and the biggest issue is I can never decide on just one menu item! I have enjoyed their crab taco salad, their seafood chimichanga, and seafood burritos. I have also enjoyed their combo menu. The portion sizes are huge, I challenge you to eat it all in one sitting! You can't! The prices are respectable, to say the portion sizes are generous is almost a lie, as it is a feast! Their rice and beans that come with most meals are always delicious! We have other choices in Oak Harbor for Mexican, but we all know for a sit down Mexican restaurant, the real locals go to Esteban's Mexican Restaurant, while the Sailors and tourist go to El Caz. Then three tables after us were seated they all got drink orders before we did when he finally came to get our drinks he wanted our food order first. I have had the best customer service from Aaron. I know this is going to sound crazy but I was with a big party and he was great. My 3 year old son started throwing up and before I knew it Aaron had jumped to my rescue with extra napkins to catch it before it went everywhere. I immediately get up and take him to the bathroom to clean him up and out of know where again Aaron is there with baby wipes....... like where did these come from?
