I am mainly writing this review to encourage all my fellow celiacs/gluten intolerants to go here, get into the chest freezer right by the entrance, and grab the pain au chocolat (chocolate crossiant). I'm still dreaming about it weeks later. ;-; was so ridiculously scrumptious.

They have amazing croissants and little pies and cookies stuffed with Nutella. They also have slices of pizza and appetizer-like food that they can heat up in a toaster oven, however I would stick to the baked goods because you can get really good gluten free pizza, calzones and pasta at multiple restaurants within a few blocks of this bakery. They also sell bread and whole cakes but we only sampled 4 of their baked goods. It's a relief to have so many options when visiting a new city. If you're looking to save money by stocking up your hotel or apartment with breakfast foods, this is a great place to go. It was surprising how inexpensive the items were compared to what we pay for the luxury of a gluten free muffin in the U.S. There were GF donuts listed on the website, but we didn't see any in the afternoon, so my advice would be to stop by early if you want the opportunity to choose from everything this lovely bakery makes.

They have a wide assortment of gluten free goodies -- from cookies to pies to savory bread-based delights. It's all priced quite fairly, too. I came in around 6pm on a Friday, and the kind woman behind the counter advised me to come back in the morning because they had more things in the mornings. I was sincerely baffled and said-- wait, more?! To me, they had a ton of great options even at 6pm! Apparently the cases are packed full in the mornings and if you want your best pick of the lot, go then. But if you're like me and not able to do that for whatever reason, you'll still find plenty! I can't have gluten or dairy. Sometimes it's hard to find dairy free goodies in a gluten free bakery. Not so with Starbene! They had cookies, pies and tarts as well as some bread-based savory items -- all clearly marked as without dairy. Grazie, Starbene!! Made my whole night! I ended up getting some cookies (3 for 1€) -- they were almost like thumbprints, with blackberry jam filling and with chocolate hazelnut filling. So. Good. I also got an apricot jam tart (~3€, I think). It was also delicious! The apricot jam was just the right amount of sweet and the crust was perfectly flakey. Plus, there was a heart shape on top which was just the sweetest little detail. I also got a focaccina, which was kind of like a bread roll pizza without cheese or sauce. It was super good! I took it up to Piazzale Michelangelo and enjoyed it with a view of the city. Perfection! My next visit to Florence, Starbene's will be a must do. No question about it. Gluten free friends, get yourselves over there and enjoy!

I ended up buying the twin pack of the balsamic and white vinegar, the 25 year old balsamic vinegar, and a walnut liquor (they happen to have a lot of walnuts and they make it into alcohol. it's very strong). I totally regret not buying the bigger bottle of their condiment balsamic vinegar though. Getting here from the main station via public transportation was quite stressful because I don't speak Italian and couldn't ask for help. BUT the people super helpful and nice. The bus driver actually got out of her bus to point to where I should stand and was extremely helpful. This doesn't happen in Los Angeles! In my experience, the people of Modena were extremely kind and friendly. Before your trip, contact them and book a reservation. The tour is free. How to get there via bus: From the main station, I took Bus 9, transferred at Modena Autostazione and took Bus 2A to San Donnino. You MUST take Bus 2A, not Bus 2 because Bus 2A goes a little further to your final destination. The cost is only €1.50 and you pay ON THE BUS. I thought I had to buy tickets before boarding like in Rome. The bus driver doesn't check to see if you have a ticket but there are officers who get on the bus at random stops to do a check. And I can tell you from experience that one old lady got in soooo much trouble because she didn't tap her card. She must have been a local trying to get a free ride.

Classic dishes of the region are served here and were at the highest level of quality and flavor. One person in our group was celiac and the chef, Tiziana, makes gluten free versions of 90% of the items on her menu. They were better than any gluten free dish we've ever eaten anywhere. Everyone in the party thought they were as good as the traditional version with gluten. Tiziana is obsessed with making gluten free versions of her dishes to the point that she has a boutique mill make her specially formulated gluten free flour. We went for dinner three times and plan to go anytime we visit the Bologna area again. But don't think of this as a gluten free restaurant, it's an excellent restaurant that happens to offer unparalleled gluten free versions of its dishes.
