    Coconut fritter with salmon
    Kristie C.

Come here twice in the past month, once for a team dinner and another for a date night. Highly recommend! Lots of light, flavorful seafood options with creative and fun twists to look forward to (grilled shiso? Yes please). There are also richer items (milk bread, sesame pancake as an example) Recommend: - any of the fish: coconut fritter with salmon, kampachi, halibut - steak was fantastic - salads: loved the little gems with dashi Overall, phenomenal spot with friendly and fast service. Would come back!

Finally made it to Ethel's Fancy and it was every bit as good as people say! Service was excellent from start to finish. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable and genuinely seemed to care that we were having a great experience. Food was the star of the night. My favorites were the toasted coconut fritters, the yellowfin tuna on koshihikari rice and the lightly cured kampachi. The tuna and kampachi were incredibly fresh, beautifully presented and packed with flavor. The fritters were something I wouldn't normally order but I'm glad we did. They were absolutely delicious. Cocktails were also a pleasant surprise. Creative without being gimmicky and each one was well balanced and thoughtfully put together. What I appreciated most was the attention to detail. Every dish looked beautiful but more importantly everything tasted as good as it looked. You can tell there's real care behind the ingredients, preparation and presentation. Palo Alto has no shortage of great restaurants but Ethel's Fancy stands out. We'll definitely be back.

SWORDFISH, "KATSU-STYLE" 44 heirloom cauliflower, spiced kumquat, karasht butter
    Cindy T.

Ethel's delivers thoughtfully executed dishes with high-quality ingredients and attention to detail. The menu leans toward refined, shareable plates that prioritize craftsmanship and flavor. Here's what I ordered: -Hokkaido Scallop Tartare (5/5): Easily the standout dish of the evening. The scallops were incredibly fresh and buttery, with each component adding just enough flavor without overshadowing the seafood itself. Balanced, refined, and memorable. - Swordfish, "Katsu-Style" (4.8/5): Comforting yet elevated. Loved the sauce that came with the swordfish katsu. - Sashimi of Kampachi (4/5): Clean and simple. - Crispy Caledonian Blue Prawns (4/5): Perfectly cooked with a satisfying crunch and well-balanced flavors. - Toasted Coconut Fritters (3.8/5): An interesting combination of warm coconut fritters topped with salmon. The contrast between the sweetness of the fritter and the savory richness of the salmon made for a unique bite.

Came by for dinner the other night and it was a tasty experience. Ethel's Fancy has been open for a few years and is now featured in the Michelin guide. Made a reservation for dinner and our table was ready upon arrival. Dining is available indoors in a private room, by the kitchen counter, at the bar, or in the main dining room. There are also a few heated tables outoors too. Unlike previous visits, there was a discovery tasting menu for $115 featuring 4 courses including a few new items that are not on the a la carte menu. Opted to do a la carte. Highlights included the salt and pepper octopus which was perfect with the salt and pepper batter along with the potato and green bean salad that complemented this dish perfectly. The snap peas are were fantastic, just like on previous visits. Tried the swordfish this time and it was fantastic. The swordfish was gigantic, lightly battered and fried, just like a katsu. The pork chop was tasty too, being juicy and flavorful. Most importantly, it wasn't dry like sandpaper! The steak was decent. The waitstaff suggested a medium which may have been a touch too high for my tastes... Ordered one of each of the desserts with the chocolate caramel tart being the highlight with a variety of textures and flavors for the dessert. Service throughout the evening was fantastic with staff checking in with us every so often! Scott, himself, even made an appearance to drop off the desserts! ~$150/head after tax, gratuity, and 6% employer surcharges.

We were blown away by the food and service. My friend had such a wonderful birthday at Ethel's Fancy. Thank you for making her day. I love the decor here, it's fancy for sure. We got the tasting menu and everything was phenomenal.

    Milk Bread, so good!

A solid 4.5 stars. Ethel's Fancy is a Michelin-recommended restaurant, and they offer a unique menu with great service. We had a mostly wonderful dining experience, with just a couple of dishes that we weren't as satisfied with. Here's what we loved: Milk Bread - This is a must get. The soft and tender bread served with butter and Maldon sea salt was amazing. Beef Skewers - These were delicious. Each bite was filled with a juicy complex flavor. Coconut Fritters - Topped with gorgeous slices of King Salmon, we thought this variation of Japanese nigiri was a tasty morsel. Crispy Pork Belly - The pork belly was as promised, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The citrus pieces gave this dish an added layer of flavor as well. Black Cod - The fish was melt in your mouth tender. While the ginger soy was a tad on the salty side, the ajo blanco helped balance out the flavors. On the so-so side: Cucumbers and Spring Onions - this dish didn't wow me as much as I was hoping for. I think it needed a touch more acidity to give it more pop. Prime Beef Striploin - While it was made to order, this was an especially disappointing dish for us, due to the big piece of gristle throughout the steak. For a prime grade piece of beef, we weren't expecting that. Enough said. The ambiance had an inviting feel, and the staff was wonderful. We caught a glimpse of Chef Scott a couple of times, and it's always nice to see the chef in action.

Food is a 5/5 but our experience in the back room was a 3/5. This sort of makes it difficult to come up with an accurate rating, but I think I'll stick with 4/5. At Mary A's recommendation, I made a reservation for 5 for my sister's bachelorette weekend - we arrived for our reservation on a Friday evening at 7:45pm and were seated in the back room with blue walls. It's a small room with 3 tables for 5 people each, with a window into the main dining room. Unfortunately, I think this room spoiled the overall experience for us. First, the room is between the bathrooms and the main dining hall. There is a front kitchen area but I think that there was also a hallway connecting to more kitchen area (or perhaps where dishes was washed, I dunno.) There's a lot of foot traffic, so the staff regularly used a sliding door to close off this blue room. There's a few downsides to this room: 1) out of sight out of mind: we definitely felt like service was slow. I'll put time stamps of when I took pictures of each dish, but there was definitely a lot of sitting around. 2) Not sure if we had more gnats due to proximity to the bathroom or to kitchen/warewashing area, but there were some flying insects. One even landed in my wine :( - our waiter replaced the glass at no cost, but I spotted more gnats and felt like I had to finish my replacement glass quickly to avoid the same experience. 3) if there is a loud group in the room, it quickly becomes overwhelming. We were in the middle table next to a table of 5 with boisterous people that were drinking. There were times that they broke out in laughter and it was SO loud that 1) it drowned out anything that someone at OUR table was saying and 2) made people flinch at the loudness. We were putting in our order and their sudden laughter made our waiter flinch!! My back was to the last table in the room, but the other bridesmaids told me that that table kept glancing over at the loud table. It's not something that can be really controlled by the restaurant especially with drunk people, but it made for a worse experience for us. That being said, the food was some of the best that weekend. I would say that the family style works best for groups of 4 or smaller. I always wanted another bite but we couldn't justify getting a second of any plate. And at the end, we had been waiting for so long for food that we opted to not order anything else beyond what we had ordered. Milk bread (8:15pm): really tasty and very soft. Lightly cured kampachi (8:27pm): absolutely lovely. Spinach was perfectly seasoned and the kampachi had the perfect bite of a fresh raw fish. Grilled Caledonian blue prawns (8:29pm): I don't even like prawns all that much but I liked these! Most of us had never sucked on a prawn head the way our parents have, but we did and it was sooo creamy and rich. If you haven't tried it, you're missing out! Only downside is that it came with only 4 prawns so two of us had to split one. Rodriguez farm spring strawberries: this was a recommendation by our waiter and it was... interesting. It had some sort of granita and some sort of vinegar to it (which wasn't listed on the menu) - unfortunately it wasn't a good pick (doesn't balance out the taste like balsamic vinegar on strawberries). "Salt and pepper" Spanish octopus (8:45pm): really delicious - fried and crispy. Kelp noodles (8:49pm): I'm obsessed with these and it's the one dish I would've loved to reorder if I could. They were buttery, and a nice bite to them and just sooo tasty. Swordfish, katsu-style (9:08pm): I loved this as well - even though it was fried, it tasted light and bright. Yuzu kosho glazed trout (9:26pm): this felt more on the raw side, which I personally love but my sister usually doesn't - but we both loved this dish! Honestly, all of the seafood dishes were a hit! Again, the food was fantastic but the experience in the back room was not so great. It was too loud until that group left, and then it felt like it took a really long time for food to come out (last 2 dishes took nearly 20 min each to come out). I would definitely be interested in coming back again and dining in the main room. Ultimately, I was mostly disappointed that I couldn't give my sister the best experience at the first dinner of her bachelorette weekend.

    Full Belly Farm Mizuna Salad

Had a reservation for 6:15pm for dinner date. Parking is along the street so you may have to walk a bit to get to restaurant. There is indoor and outdoor dining, and the ambiance is very lively. There is an indoor bar as well. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave good recommendations that paired well together. HOKKAIDO SCALLOP TARTARE: scallops were so fresh and this tartare had so many layers. There are little bursts of flavors in each bite, ranging from curry to ponzu. Very unique flavor profile. Seaweed rice paper was light but added nice crunch WARM SESAME PANCAKES + SMOKED TROUT DIP: so perfect. Never thought to pair sesame pancakes with smoked trout but it works so well. Although there are chili crisps, it is not very spicy, just adds crunch FULL BELLY FARM MIZUNA SALAD: the cheese is very creamy and was a nice contrast to the bitter notes of the greens. We were given a knife to cut up the large leaves haha HAND CUT KELP NOODLES: abalone was cooked well, not overly chewy. Good mushroom fragrance in every bite. Noodles were good texture, not overly chewy either SWORDFISH KATSU-STYLE: breaded and fried well, but the star of the show was actually the spiced kumquats. It elevated the otherwise normal taste of deep fried fish. The sauce was kind of like a more tart hollandaise BANANA BLACK SESAME SOFT SERVE: this is such an amazing combo. Perfect way to cap off the dinner Such a beautiful experience, will be coming back to try other seasonal menu items!

    oysters on the half
    Donna T.

Ethel's Fancy is the type of restaurant that seems like it's well on its way to a Michelin star; at least in my opinion. My friend and I shared an array of dishes for the night: - salt and pepper spanish octopus (5/5) - yellowfin tuna on koshihikari rice (5/5) - grilled brandt farms beef striploin (5/5) - oysters on the half (3/5) - rouge de bordeaux milk bread (5/5) - kampachi crudo: (5/5) As you can see, most were incredible! Our server recommended the kampachi crudo which was nestled on a yakitori cracker; deliciously unique and definitely the number one for me. I also really enjoyed the anchovy peppercorn sauce that accompanied the beef striploin, which was cooked to medium-rare perfection. The only small bite that I didn't quite adore was the oysters. Although I'm usually a crème fraîche fanatic, I felt it didn't pair really well with the oysters. Thus, I'd rate this restaurant a 4.5/5, but will round up as 5/6 of the dishes were straight hits. Service was good; our server was attentive and our waters were frequently refilled. The woody interior makes the space feel cozy while maintaining a mid-century modern aesthetic. We left full and wanting to come back!

Wanted to try more dishes, but after the first four items we ordered were so basic and underwhelming, our appetites were honestly killed. We got the sesame pancake with trout, coconut salmon fritters, yellowtail tuna on Koshihikari rice, and crispy blue shrimp. 1. Sesame pancake with trout: the pancake was incredibly dry, like eating an old sponge. It came with a smoked trout dip that tasted very basic and was paired with avocado and yuzu, but the flavors completely clashed. The yuzu was practically nonexistent. This dish was just sad. 2. Coconut salmon fritters: these were good, but honestly they tasted almost identical to a Vietnamese dish called bánh ít trần. Even the fish-sauce flavored salmon reminded me of it. Tasty? Kinda. Memorable or unique? Not at all. 3. Yellowtail tuna on Koshihikari rice: it was okay, but it's literally just fish on top of rice. There wasn't much else going on. (at least the fish was fresh). 4. Crispy blue shrimp: another disappointing dish. It was basically shrimp tempura with a fancy name, except we paid $34 for it. At that price point, we're expecting umami, delicate crispy shrimp, not something you can find almost anywhere else. I'll give 1 star for the excellent service and another star for the amazing drinks. The food, however, felt overpriced, uninspired, and lacking any standout flavors. We left feeling more disappointed than impressed.

    blue prawns - very good
    Clarisse T.

cute and chill little spot! my favorite was the blue prawns - duck dumplings - octopus - pork belly - scallop tarter - milk bread. i'd say i like everything except the milk bread and feeling meh about the scallop tartare. the scallop had curry flavor in it but it def overpowered the scallops' natural taste. milk bread felt like it was a little denser in texture which was fine but the flavorful was quite bland so didn't care much for it. blue prawns were so juicy and flavorful, the way they were cooked really preserved and elevated the prawns' natural taste. duck dumplings almost tasted like there's some pate in them and the salt and pepper octopus was so tender and the potato salad complimented the octopus with well! our server was extremely friendly and def made us feel very welcome. i liked the speed of which they served the different dishes and never made us feel rushed either.

Came for Valentine's Day and the prefix menu was great! Service was attentive. All dishes came out fairly quickly even though we were eating each dish fast. Wine recommendations also paired well with the various dishes we had. A lot of the menu for the night is a bit different than what can be ordered in the regular dinner service, so maybe we were spoiled a bit. But, all the dishes were great and there was a great mixture of seafood and meat, along with a few carb-focused dishes. Desserts were tasty and finished the night perfectly.

Wow. Could not have been happier with the food!…read more Will present the food in the order I would recommend: Banana fritters- soft clouds of fried dough, over some rum dark chocolate sauce. Divine! 7/5 Curry cauliflower over a red non spicy sauce. Refreshing! The flavors blended together with the flavorful but not overpowering flavor, with the well balanced sauce underneath. Could not stop eating it. $17 8/5 Mezze plate - the coconut feta was very creamy and good, I really enjoyed the pomegranate arugula salad with pickled onion and with the pieces of falafel inside. The flatbread was a little hard, but good. The eggplant was good and hummus also good. $32 price a little steep for the platter 6/5 Impossible cheeseburger - classic impossible burger. The standout item was the fries, quite good! Crisp outside and soft inside. 5/5 French toast - ok, a little dry, the berry sauce was good but lacking a little dynamic flavor maybe some citrus? 3/5 Cookie with vegan ice cream. Alas, pastries are still difficult to make well vegan 3/5 Service was a little distracted and hard to order. Bussing was very on top of it. I will return for the top items

Everyone ordered different dishes so we could try a lot of things from the menu. 1/5 Athenian Eggplant - Far too sour and the flat bread was SO HARD. Even carb lovers didn't want to finish it. 4/5 Green Falafel - Came warm and the tzatziki sauce was pretty good. 4/5 French fries - Sauces were interesting. 1/5 Mushroom bao - ONE small piece of fried mushroom in each of the two baos that came out. It was stuffed with sour lettuce instead. 2/5 Corn pizza - That coconut mozz was not it for me. 3/5 Chicken sandwich - Solid. Drinks were good! What's up Doc was my fave. Located in the corner of the plaza next to CVS. Good service.

The hand made fettuccini and dry aged NY steak were both cooked perfectly. The healthy portion sizes were appreciated also, we had leftovers. Also get the bread pudding, you will not regret it! Fun dinner at Sekoya, we will be back.

I usually go Japanese, because many of my regular…read moredining partners are averse to raw fix, but I liked the eclectic menu here so off we went. Parking is a bit tricky, but park in the lot behind. It usually has spots. Modern interesting decor, but tiny and things felt cramped. Also, with all hard surfaces, it was extremely loud! Our server was sweet, and mostly there when we needed her. Here's what we ate: We shared DOUBLE-FRIED TEMPURA MUSHROOMS shimeji & oyster mushrooms, whipped tofu, yuzu, sweet soy, togarashi, chives | $16: 3.5 *. The mushrooms were delicious and so crispy, but not overdone. The "whipped Tofu, etc. was kind of plopped on the side and had NO flavor. I saw no evidence of the chives or togorashi CAESAR SALAD romaine hearts, garlic croutons, parmigiano reggiano tuile, house caesar dressing | $20: 3.5*. Pretty much standard issue. the lettuce was very tender and fresh For my entreé I chose ROASTED SCALLOPS day boat scallops, snap peas, parsnips puree, orange-soy glaze | $46 4*. Portion was small, only 3 scallops (hmmm ~$15 per scallops) The scallops were a tad under for me, but nicely caramelized and the accompanying peas and glaze were a delicious pairing. I usually find parsnip pureé to sweet, but this one had just the right balance. G got ROASTED MARY'S CHICKEN garlic mashed potatoes, green beans, chicken jus | $34. 3.5* This was a huge portion, like half a chicken. She absolutely loved the potatoes. I think the chicken was just okay, nothing special and the skin wasn't crispy. For dessert we split a butterscotch pudding topped with fresh fruit. It was a wonderful rich creamy flavor, but very tiny - 4-5 oz. I don't remember the price, but I think it was like $20 3.5* On balance, creative, some highlights. Would be better just for a drink and snacks. Too loud and price benefit ratio was very uneven. Food: 29/40 Ambience: 16/20 service: 16/20 value: 16/20 Overall: 77/100

We made a…read morereservation for 5:30pm on Saturday but walked in at 4pm already hungry, hoping they could seat us early. The hostess did, and we were pleased to see more options on their summer menu since the first time we tried RH Rooftop Restaurant previously was in the winter. My mom ordered the Peach Bellini, I ordered the Pomme Royal (non-alcoholic). In my opinion this menu does have a little something for everyone, even if you're looking for something more casual or budget-friendly. They have a gorgeous selection of salads - super hydrated and happy vegetables, beautiful presentation, very refreshing - plus familiar favorites like burgers and sandwiches - all the way to your lobster and overpriced oysters. We ended up sharing the Steak Frites (medium rare), the Lobster Roll (added caviar), as well as the Blue Fin Toro Carpaccio. The steak frites really impressed me and I could see why people all around us were ordering french fries alone - they're top tier and you can tell they're fresh cut potatoes vs. frozen. Steak was perfectly seasoned and the lump crab on top was also fresh, vs. canned. I wish there was more. Lobster roll was divine, although on the smaller side, and next time we probably won't add the caviar. The caviar alone added an extra $40 to a $36 sandwich so... yeah. The carpaccio is mouthwateringly thin and served with a lighter dusting of caviar - we wanted to order another one and flagged our server down for a second order, but it never came. Like other reviewers have mentioned, service can be slow and disjointed. We were served by 3-4 different faces and although I didn't mind that, I could see how things were lost in translation. Our cloth napkins also smelled gross (when you leave them in the washer too long) which was a huge turn-off so we asked for paper napkins to wipe our mouths. Other than that, it's a real treat to watch the sunset from the outdoor patio if you're around in time with the fireplaces turned on.

On this occasion, we came here on a Friday evening, we had made reservations for 6 of us. I personally ordered the agua fresca-pineapple and the lasagna. We ordered 2 chips and salsa for the table and the others ordered, arugula salad, tacos de carnitas, mahi mahi tacos, hamachi tostadas and drinks such as the spicy tamarindo, mocktail and margarita. Everyone loved their selections. One of my friends ordered the chocolate tart and the chocolate was too rich for my liking but the mousse that accompanied it was soo good, very tart and tropical. This restaurant is on California Ave., no restaurant parking but there is street parking nearby, although not on this street since its closed off to vehicle traffic. There is also a parking lot and a parking garage nearby. Once you eat, you can take a nice stroll down the Ave. Check online for details but once a month, on Thursdays, the city helps to sponsor a Thursday Live events with music, giveaways and games. Because of timing for other errands we came at 10:30 am and they were open on time and ready. Sitting outside or inside is amazing, outside you get the crowd and the sun. Inside you get amazing interior design. My overall feedback is this is one of the rare "fancy" Mexican places that justify the price and justification. Everything is above average in taste and execution. Brunch Tacos mole: chicken mole poblano, scrambled eggs, huitlacoche, tortillas, epazote crema, fried shallots & avocado. Perfect portioning and the salad that came with it had a fantastic dressing. I pulled some chicken out and gave it to my wife and then it was perfect, a bit too overstuff before. The mole and overall taste were quite good though. Chilaquiles: tortilla chips sautéed in chile de árbol-guajillo salsa, topped with queso fresco, cilantro crema, and an egg. My wife loved this so much it made her question every time she didn't order it before. Fried egg sandwich: two over easy eggs on house baked brioche bun, chipotle aioli, avocado, bacon, cheddar cheese, fried shallot. Kids loved this and happily ate the leftover after. Iced Mexican Cafe: delicious iced coffee with a distinct Mexican taste. Distrito Verde: mezcal, basil, lemon, and falernum. Simple but refreshing brunch cocktail, really paired well with the mole tacos. Chips and salsa: These are not free but worth the price. Both the chips and the 2 salsa are of extremely good quality and preparation. Abnormally tasty and the kids went crazy eating it.
