Do not trust or rent from Europcar. We picked up a car in Edinburgh, and were heading for the Highlands. We thought we would stop at some historic sites along the way. Thirty minutes after we picked up the car we were rear-ended by a police car while we were stopped at a round-about waiting to enter. We followed the police to a parking lot, gave them all our information. We examined the car and popped the trunk to see the extent of damage to the rear. After the trunk was opened once, they could not close it again, and they told us we could not drive it with the trunk open and there was nothing to tie it down with. One officer kept trying to slap the trunk closed, and in doing so shattered the rear window. Then we were told we really could not drive it. The police said they were fully responsible and not to worry about it; they would take care of everything with the Europcar. We called Europcar and told them the situation, and they said they would have someone out there to tow the vehicle and they would get us a taxi to take us to the nearest Europcar site. Within a reasonable amount of time a tow truck came to take the car, but the driver didn't know anything about another car. We called Europcar back and they said they were looking for a site with a similar size car as ours and would call us back. In the meantime the car was towed away and we were left with our luggage in the parking lot. After the time passed when Europcar said they would return our call we called them back (of course every time we called we get someone new), and they said the manager will have to deal with us, but she was busy at that time and they would have her call us back. No one ever called back. After 4 hours in the parking lot and multiple phone calls to Europcar we finally got our own taxi and went to the closest rental car agency, which was an Enterprise. They put us in the largest vehicle they had, and we were on our way. Europcar never called us back. We would still be there today if we had waited for them. Needless to say there was no time left in the day to go anywhere, but our hotel as the day was over. If they had told us we needed to arrange our own transport and they would give us credit later I could have dealt with that, but they kept saying they would call us back, but never did. After we got back to the U.S. (and multiple written complaints) we received a bill from Europcar for 5 days rental, but they gave us a small rebate due to our inconvenience. I cancelled the entire charge on my credit card, and told them I wanted to be reimbursed for the taxi and the rental car I had to get due to their negligence. They are still looking into it. Avoid Europcar; they could not care less about people. read more
