What I experienced was the pleasantry of people watching, drinking beer in the outdoors, marathons or bike-a-thons that go through the city, seeing the concerts that happen in front of the square. It's a very pleasant place to be -- if you're visiting, you can't miss it, of you've pretty much missed Groningen. :)
