I had Evans install a new heating system in my house last week. When the estimate was done, they allocated three days for the removal of the old system and the installation of the new one. Now, I live in a home that is 100 years old and the old furnace was from the 70's if not earlier (all of the ID had long ago been worn away). Turns out my cold air return was not an actual duct but a shaft made out of paneling. You get the picture. The project did take three days and, given the kinks presented by the construction of the house, that was in record time. I cannot say enough about the creativity and hard work demonstrated by this Evans team. Thomas was the crew foreman and he, Christian and Daniel worked seamlessly together. I was impressed how Thomas not only drew out the workers ideas when faced with a problem but took the time to teach them how to do a different way to solve a problem. We know we can depend on Evans to do the job correctly and efficiently. Our furnace thermostat controller was going crazy. A call to the office, and James was there within the hour. (On Friday of Labor Day weekend) Apparently, the backup batteries corroded and caused severe damage and connectivity issues. They had the replacement part in stock, he installed it and programmed it quickly and expertly. As with all the EM technicians, James was a pleasure to have in our home. Watch out for these guys. I contacted them to see what they would charge me to install one counterflow wall furnace...initially I wanted them to install one I would buy myself for approximately $1000, but they said they didn't do that I would need to allow them to supply the furnace. I heard they did good work so I decided to go through with gettting an estimate from them. The guy that came out was nice enough and seemed to know his stuff. He looked at my simple project and said he would come up with an estimate which he did, and was emailed to me within a few days. The estimate was $1740 which I figured seemed close enough to reasonable to go ahead and do it...they would not tell me how much was parts and how much was labor, but I already knew the furnace was $1000 so I figured the rest would be a slight mark up on the furnace itself plus a fair wage for the worker to do what was clearly no more than a several hour job. I called and let them know I wanted them to do the work. I got an apologetic phone call from the dude who had come to my house letting me know he had mistakenly given me a quote for what they charge for a water heater installation. Um, okay. And that he was very sorry but he would have to send out a new estimate. Ruh-roh. Hmmm I wonder how much more the new estimate would be? $3990!!!! That's how much. For a $1000 wall furnace. That is, to me, sketchy. They were ready to happily charge me nearly $3000 in labor alone for what was clearly, to anybody with any knowledge of construction at all, a several hour job. I ended up buying a different unit (which had admittedly a slightly simpler installation...maybe 1 or 2 hours less than the one Evan's quoted me on). I paid an electrician and a licensed HVAC guy a grand total of $450 (at $90 and $70 per hour) to do the needed installation: a fair and honest wage. Evan's would have seriously charged me something like $600 to $700 per hour to do this job. I feel kind of mad about that. read more

I chose Evans Mechanical because of their reputation when I decided to replace my 40 year old heater. It's clear that their excellent reputation is well deserved. Once I sat down with Joe for an estimate, I knew I was sold on Evans. I selected the Nest system for my smoke detectors and for my thermostat because I love gadgets. Even though it is not their typical choice, they installed them with ease. The existing attic access was too small to remove the old heater, so it had to be widened. The return was located in the stairwell to the garage, which made no sense, so that needed to be moved to the interior hallway. Everything that needed to be done was explained to me in detail and they didn't tire of my questions. Not only did they do a great job, they actually seemed to enjoy their work. The crew got along well with each other and with me in the house. The fellows were so easy going, that I know that Brad is Happy (no, really, he's so super enthusiastic that the others call him that!). Hatch aka Tuna (lead installer) led the project with skill and may start watching Homeland soon, since that's what I was watching for much of their stay. Mike (the Foreman) and Dan both love animals. They were all respectful of my sneaky and somewhat crotchety old indoor cat, Pete. Hatch even suggested, then made (free of charge) custom wall plates to lay behind the thermostat and one of the smoke detectors to stylishly hide the blemishes left on the walls from the older units. Our central heater went out about 3 or 4 years ago. Because we primarily rely on wood heat, we weren't as concerned about getting it fixed right away. Given some of the colder nights the past few years we decided it might be nice to have a backup because it is hard to get the house above 59 degrees when it's been 25 at night. Upon recommendations from a few other folks, we decided to go with Evans. The appointment was made for a few days after I called and Jim came out and thoroughly inspected the heater. What I was initially told the issue was was only part of the problem, and he explained everything in layperson's terms, which is helpful since I am not an HVAC person. Estimate was given, parts were ordered, and he came back the following week and did the installation quickly and efficiently. Everyone associated with the installation of my new heating system was professional, courteous and conscientious about the job. All the employees are clearly customer service oriented. I began with the $97.00 diagnostic process which was necessary to determine the next step. I then met with Joe Tanno for a comprehensive consultation regarding options for purchasing a new heating system. I opted for the installation of a new Bryant 95% efficiency rate furnace which included having all the heating ducts cleaned and checked, and finally having the pipes beneath the house wrapped and insulated. They did an awesome job in all three categories. l love my new heating system!! For pet owners, this is worth noting: I was especially impressed and appreciative with how conscientious and careful everyone was with ensuring the safety of my dog. Never once did anyone fail to close the dog gate behind them when entering or leaving the house. (and they went in and out that gate many, many times throughout the job). Thank you. My mom, who has passed, paid for 3 years in advance for cleaning and checking out of our forced air furnace. She was here for the first two of them but passed before the third one was done. EM called to set up the third visit. The young man showed up on time and went to do his thing under the house. After a while he came back into the house and told me how sorry he was, but he had to turn off the heater because he had found rust on the main box that held the unit in place AND he had found a bare wire and he was afraid it might cause a real problem. But, luckily he had several brochures showing new units and he would be happy to sell me a nice new unit that would be perfectly safe. Oh yes, they had a great payment plan I could use. I told him I would get back to him on that. Later that winter day I called PGE and asked them to check it out. Stan from PGE came by and went under the house and shortly came back and turned on the unit. It fired up and began to heat the house nicely. He said that there was a bit of rust on the box but it didn't affect the operation of the unit at all. He also told me that the wire that was losing some insulation was in fact a ground wire and didn't really cause any problem being bare as it fastened to a rod that was buried in the ground. Almost 2 years later, I have a great working heater. Playing devils advocate, I wonder how many senior citizens (I was 67 at the time of the visit from EM) have been scared into purchasing a new unit from EM when there was nothing really wrong with their unit? I wont be able to use their services again, just not sure if I would trust their diagnosis again. read more

I rate Evan's mechanical this low due to timing, diagnosis and cost of repairs to my heating system. It took 3 weeks to have Evan's come to assess my broken heater, then another week+ for them to order the part and to come to replace it. Then they brought parts to fix an air filtration system, but then decided it would be best to replace the whole thing - another week+. Then when they came to replace that part, they found another part that was not working on the air filtration system and needed to order and replace that - another week+. The cost was almost 2 x what it would have been to replace the air filtration system outright. I must say that Joe was professional and helpful and did his best to work with me as this repair dragged on and on, but I feel in the end that I paid way too much for a system that has been pieced together - more than for a new unit and I wish that Evan's had diagnosed that sooner saving time and money. read more

I wanted to get a note out regarding the service I experienced recently with Jim Nunes of Evans Mechanical. I have to say right off that I was impressed with the fact that Jim showed up early and I also appreciate the fact that he had shoe covers. I knew I was dealing with a professional within the first five minutes after Jim arrived. His friendly disposition really set me at peace regarding this job. Jim's knowledge and experience with our Bryant furnace was evident by his fast and accurate diagnosis of the problem. Jim explained the problem and informed me that he would likely have the part (control board) in his truck. The price was good and Jim even offered to get rid of some extra junk parts abandoned near my furnace (probably left over from the previous owners). Jim also informed me that I had an extra filter that was not needed for my furnace. In less than an hour our heat was fully restored--just in time for my wife's arrival from the Bay Area (she literally drove up as Jim was preparing to leave). With the cold nights we have experienced, I can rest easy knowing that our home is comfortable and that I was able to get the furnace fixed as I had promised my wife. I asked about paying a fee for labor (hourly rate vs. the "upfront price" which is the quoted amount for parts and labor and was told,"No, I'm only a worker bee". The bottom line, they have extremely inflated prices. After writing my review, I received a call addressing my concerns. The employee that responded to my concerns, was professional and reasonable.
