If anyone ever asked me in a word how I felt about chiropractors I would answer, "skeptical". In the world of legitimate medicine I always considered chiropractors to be in that grey area. Many times I even negatively associated them to be ambulance chasers because most people only see them after car accidents or workplace injuries. I was especially annoyed with seeing diagnosis from them when I worked in the corporate world in the Human Resources department. I guess you never learn to appreciate people until you find yourself in a place where no other types of medicine can help you but the one you underestimated the most. So, here goes my story and the reason for this review: Around April 24th, 2015, I was working on a client and filing her nails (I am now a nail artist at Orchid Nail Lounge in Santa Clara) when I felt the pressure I was putting on my left elbow on the table transfer to my left shoulder blade and suddenly it felt like a thousand tiny rubber bands had burst in my back. The pain was so intense it crippled me leaving me leaning forward to compensate for the rest of the nail appointment. I knew at that moment I had done something horrible to myself but I had no idea how to help myself. I even turned to my coworker and told her something is terribly wrong and that I needed to see a doctor immediately. The days that followed consisted of me using heating pads, topical pain relievers like icy hot to take away the pain but nothing would suffice. After a few more days I finally drove myself in the middle of the night and waited to be seen in the emergency room at Valley Medical Center. I waited the entire night and wasn't seen because there were so many emergencies which required more serious attention then mine. I left and returned on other days to be seen only to be told I had muscle strains and skeletal issues. In total it was a series of 3 visits to the Emergency room. My biggest concern was heart attack due to the severity of pain and location of which. I was prescribed heavy drugs like baclofen, valium, high doses of ibuprofen, and other drugs for my g.i. which had become irritated due to lack of sleep, lack of eating, and non stop working. I was even given a shot to relax my muscles on one visit which only helped me for 2 days. I lived like this for another 2 1/2 months until I found Dr. Matt. Imagine, sleeping less then 4 hours a day because of crippling pain induced by a working position that you had to do 7 days a week often for more then 10 hours a day. This is what happens when your ambition surpasses your biological abilities and it was crushing me. I asked a client on an eyelash appointment who she had seen after a major car accident that allowed her to return to body building so quickly. She referred me to Dr. Matt. I explained to him that I wasn't covered under any medical plans and that I would be a cash patient. He charges at least $30 less then his competitors per visit offering the same services or less; yes, I asked around before coming to see him. He sent over some forms for me to consent to treatment and we were off. I was late, partly because I was coming through rough morning traffic and partly because I'm always late; but, even 15 minutes late I was still seen and treated immediately with great enthusiasm. I was relieved to see that Dr. Matt wasn't just going to crack and pop me but would be applying Active Release Technique to Stretch my soft tissue as well. This was just what I was looking for, Skeletal Muscle treatment. The kind medicine could not fix. In total, I've only taken 2 pills of all the pills the emergency room prescribed. This is because Dr. Matt's initial treatments allowed me, while still in pain, to work, eat and sleep. I remember thinking, "I can't believe I slept last night" after my second visit. And, as I return for following visits this feeling has followed. I look forward to each visit with him, it's euphoric! When you are under an immense amount of pain and someone is able to take that away in 30-45 minutes you feel nothing but appreciation, gratitude, and confidence. I have been humbled by this experience because my perception was totally not reality here! You have alleviated all fears and skepticism I had for chiropractors. Thank you for your bedside manner, your professionalism, for your constant care and attention to my condition, and your consummate renewal of your skills and practice. I rant and rave about you to my clients daily and send you as many as I can because I firmly believe in you, your practice and that your name should be the first name that comes to mind for any muscle skeletal pain issues that arise. I'm writing this on behalf of my husband. He woke up with a ton of pain in his neck and unable to move. He contacted Dr. Smith who was very accommodating and saw him that day. He was able to determine that his neck problem was a side effect of a previous shoulder injury my husband didn't mention. He has now had two adjustments and has full mobility! I have been struggling with lower back and hip pain after I fractured my hip and he is the only chiropractor that has been able to fix the pain. I don't know what I would do without him! I had been dealing with low back pain for months, trying different exercises at home and seeing a chiropractor, but my symptoms were just getting worse. From my first appointment with Matt, I knew I had come to the right place. After a thorough evaluation, he knew exactly what my issues were and got me started on an exercise and treatment plan. He worked closely with me each session, making sure I was doing my exercises correctly and tailoring my plan each time based on my progress. I started visiting Dr. Matt due to extreme hip pain when I would squat. It got so bad that it started effecting me even when I would walk. I have seen several chiropractors over the years with lower back injuries and this is the first time I have ever felt so compelled to write a review. I injured my back back in March and my PCP heavily medicated me and suggested I find a chiropractor certified in Active ReleaseTechniques (ART). After searching the internet I found EA. I called in agony, barely able to walk and Matt sensed my desperation and was able to see me that day. The thing that really sets EA apart from other chiropractors is that they don't just treat the injury but look for ways to strengthen you to avoid problems in the future. I highly recommend doing all the exercises Matt suggest as well as activity suggestions. So yes you go to the chiropractor and yes they are suppose to help your back/neck feel better, its expected. Now for what has blown my mind....Once my back was feeling better I mentioned to Matt that I have had chronic plantar fasciitis in my left foot for almost 3 years after running a 50K. He asked if I would like him to work on the foot of course I said yes I haven't been able to run much since. I have tried everything...multiple steroid injections, expensive custom orthotics, rolling, icing, a special boot, medications, acupuncture ect. My podiatrist said my next step would be surgery...which I was not going to do. Matt worked on my foot and calf for 10-15 min. doing this ART. It hurt bad and was sore for a few days but now I have no pain in the foot!!! It feels like a miracle! I am on my feet for work for many hours and had though about cutting my foot off some days the pain was so bad! And now its gone! It sounds too good to be true but I have been running again with not pain! I write this review because I am in healthcare and a pretty active person and I believe Matt can help many people out there. I am currently training for a half marathon, and went to go see Dr. Matt after having intense tenderness and tightness in my calves and thighs after a long run. My job involves a lot of walking, and before seeing Dr. Matt I felt as though I couldn't last through the workday. Having recently learnt about ART, (active release technique), I was thrilled to learn Dr. Matt was well practiced in ART, and he did a thorough job not only completing the ART, but explaining why he was doing it and how it would benefit me. He also gave me a series of stretches to do after my runs. After just two days, the tenderness was completely gone, and now I feel more than prepared for my race this weekend. I had recently hurt my lower back. I was in so much pain I wasn't able bend over two inches, I could barely sit down and it was even difficult to get out of my car. The pinch in my lower back hurt so bad I could barely put my shoes on. After a couple days of pain, I finally decided it was time to get some help. My boyfriend, who's a bodybuilder and is constantly straining his body, referred me to Matt. Dr. Matt was very professional and very welcoming. After asking a few questions to get a better sense of my pain, he did a few active stretches with me, where he put pressure on different muscles while having me do different movements. After the active stretches, he made a few adjustments. And after the adjustments we discussed homework. He thoroughly explained and demonstrated what stretches I needed to do and why I needed to do them. What I really appreciated was how he explained to me where my problems lied and discussed what was going on with me during my session. After two sessions and a little bit of rest, I was definitely more mobile and was finally able to go back to work. Dr. Matt is very knowledgeable and anyone could tell that he loves to help people. I was in a car accident not long ago where I suffered from a whiplash injury in my neck. My neck was in a lot of pain even causing me headaches and my neck was also extremely tight. It was very hard for me to move it from left to right so I decided to make an appointment with Matt who is extremely professional and friendly. He was able to figure out exactly what was wrong with me and how we would go about treating it. He had me do some movements in my neck, some stretching as well as some readjustments. After seeing him about once a week for 3 weeks, doing my homework stretches and exercises, and resting my neck, I was back to normal! From the first appointment I have been very pleased with him.
