They also have a fully stocked bar and sell all the best kinds of ice cream and home made cakes which is useful if your date has the munchies.

Whirledart is a collection of artists studios that opens its doors from time to time to allow the general public in to see the best of the work produced within. I saw that I'd missed the latest open weekend but was intrigued by the mention of Whirled Cinema, offering interesting and unusual films to view for free on Friday and Saturday nights. The site told me they were open to their artists and friends, so after emailing to check that I, a random stranger, was also welcome (they said I was) I mosied on down there one Friday night with my boyfriend. We were pleased to find everyone was really friendly and welcoming to newcomers. The films are shown in a really cool space under the railway arch on a big screen with excellent sound, and there are some very comfy bench seats to recline on. A small bar at the back of the room is a welcome addition to an already vibey place. It's sometimes hard to believe that independent places like Whirled exist in this town, surrounded as we are by Odeons and Vues charging £8 and more for a cinema ticket. The friendly, open attitude and generosity of the guys who run the place is to be applauded, and they seemed keen for more people to show up to the screenings. If you treat the place with respect you'll be welcome - just make sure you buy a drink at the bar to say thank you. The layout is very much the same but the facilities have benefitted from a much needed upgrade like the toilets have been done up, almost all the screens now have premiere seats located at the back. The establishment has decided to get rid of the waffles and replace it with milkshake a instead. Also, they have an array of chocolate bars to add to the shake mixs such as, toffee crisp, malteasers, rollo etc. This is a great addition, especially when you are considering the nice cold drinks to go with the summer films. Additionally, look at your full price receipt brought at the box office as they have been giving out 2 4 1tickets as a nice bonus!

At £5 it's considerably cheaper than most other cinemas in town, but I found my seat comfy and the picture sharp. The sound wasn't as deafeningly loud as others cinemas, a boon to me. The tales of poorly behaved patrons are entirely believable, and I think the key to minimizing this risk is to choose a fairly adult film.

So outdoor cinema, the cons, exposed to the elements, wind, rain etc, etc. However if you get lucky you will only be faced with an ever decreasing temperature with a fluctuating wind picking up every now and then. The pros, you get to see the glorious reds created in the sky by the setting sun, which is cool. You get to watch a cult classic, Let The Right One In, in my case. The deck chairs were surprisingly comfortable. At first I thought my view might be obscured if I have a giant sit in front of me. Pleasantly surprised, no giant in front of me, when my view was not obscured. The films audio is pumped through a series of speakers all along the rooftop so even though we were in above a busy central Peckham high street and above the train tracks there was no problem with hear what was going on in the movie, although the film being in Swedish this wasn't really an issue!! The staff were very friendly and helpful as it was not a full screening we were able to acquire more blankets than usual, although I'm not sure there were enough blankets in the venue to keep some people warm!! If you dress appropriately, this is the English summer and you are on a rooftop watching a movie after sunset, you will come out of the event with a positive experience. The cinema also has a bar and small food shake. The bar staff can make a wide range of cocktails I picked one not on their menu and they produce it without batting an eye lid. The food is in the form of steak sandwiches or risotto balls with salsa sauce amongst other things. I only went 4 stars as the info given to me told me their would be pizza available. P.S. The pop corn is bottomless!!

The auditorium is very spacious yet it feels homely, the seats are comfortable, and as everyone is there for the same thing - to see a quality French film - it is very unusual to have people talking through the screening. The cafe area is also lovely, with a good atmosphere, if a little pricey. If you're a fan of French cinema you can do no better than Cinema Lumiere.
