For a long while now, I thought of having a go at this near "institution" in Clapham High Street…read more("institution" means having most of the original shops here already been replaced by trendy ones, eclipsed by bigger chains, or simply closed). It finally happened last evening. From our order, the soups were tasty enough (had a Hot & Sour and Sweet Corn Crab) but the mains were rather bland despite looking and smelling promising (had a Satay Beef with Rice and Roast Pork with Rice). The Satay sauce was weak (compared to dry versions), though the meat were cooked decently in a wok one can tell. The Roast Pork were nearly tasteless, it definitely needed more flavour while roasting to seep in. Both had freshly chopped spring onions cooked with it, but even the generous servings did not make any difference on the meal. Such disappointment.

It's decent Chinese fare - nothing hugely imaginative on offer that you can't get elsewhere and they do a decent amount of drunkard treats too - chips, chicken balls and other fried goods. It's right on the High St, never seems to be too busy in the shop itself and is usually surprisingly quick at turning your food around for you. It's actually quite expensive for what you get, so if I were sat at home and put some thought into the chinese I was going to order in, it wouldn't be from Sun Sun. Not a bad little local stop-off though. Not bad at all.

I love independent restaurants. I love hole in the wall restaurants. I love mom & pop places. Mama…read moreLan ticked all the aforementioned boxes and I therefore planned to eat at this little place serving Beijing street food as soon as I saw it Jules H joined me for dinner here over the weekend.Although there's no booking at the small restaurant, the turnover of tables is swift and we shared a larger table with some other diners The menu is small but perfectly formed, offering some noodles soups, cold noodle salads, a variety of dumplings, small snacks like pork buns and chicken wings as well as some salads. We opted for beef noodle soup, tofu noodle soup, vegetarian dumplings (pan fried gyoza style) and pork buns It's hard to know how to judge Mama Lan. On my visit to Beijing, I found the food generally disappointing. It was quite devoid of flavour compared to Cantonese, Sichuan and Taiwanese food. To be fair to Mama Lan, the taste reminded of the food I had eaten in Beijing but therefore, it wasn't the best The best dish was my beef noodle soup, which had some depth to the soup with super tender pieces of slow cooked beef brisket. However, Jules's tofu noodle soup was rather flavourless. The dumplings were nice, especially when dipped into vinegar, which was supplied on the tables. However, the pork buns arrived late, just as we were about to cancel them. They're hirata open pork buns, not like the sort you'll get a dim sum. The pork was rather dry I wanted to give the place 4 stars for being independent and different but unfortunately, the food only merits 3 stars

Mama Lan's is explicitly northern Chinese, Beijing style food - from the wheaty noodles in the noodle soups to the gyoza-like nature of many of the dumplings. This bijou Clapham outpost of the Brixton original seems to be picking up a solid crowd of regulars - I'd expect that the as-yet-unmade quasi reality series "Clapham Shore" or "Made in South Chelsea" to have scenes set here- if they can find a place for the cameras ; P The menu itself is fairly compact - if you go as a group of 3-4 people with a bit of an appetite "one of everything" is a very real option. Expect to pay c. £9 for a noodle dish, and £5-6 for the dim sum plates. Prawn dumplings were a particular high note on my visit; as other reviewers have noted, the roast pork bun wasn't a fluffy confection as one might "normally" expect, more of a bap, and the pork itself was flawless. Wood ear mushroom dumplings had a rather composty note to them. All in all we paid about £35 for two, including a drink each, which was pretty reasonable value given the quality.

28 degrees in London is enough to activate the 'it's Thai food time' trigger in me…read more Their red curry is really perfect (very spicy, original ingredients), haven't had better Thai curry in London. The salad (Yum Talay) was ok, but not as good as the curry (not spicy at all). Both dishes are parts of my smoke test that I apply each time I visit a new Thai restaurant. This place passed my test and I'll be coming back.

What's the difference between a bar and a pub ? I am not…read moresure what the distinguishing features of the two are here in England ... but in whichever category one classifies firefly, i am confident it will come out on top. I went there twice during the last two weekends to watch world cup matches, and the experience was great. Its located on the south side of Clapham Common between the Clapham South and Clapham Common stations. There's a glass door and a small courtyard in front of that. Beyond the courtyard is the road across which there is the clapham common. So when you are sitting inside watching the game, you can get a very good view of the park ... it almost feels like being outdoors. The interiors are air conditioned and so it was comfortable even during this very hot period. The place was never very crowded when i went ... we could even hear the commentary on the tv. The stuffy atmosphere that i associate with pubs in London was completely absent. The experience was delightful. They sell a wide variety of drinks and makes some very good cocktails. I tried one called "Screaming Orgasm". It was definitely not as exciting as the name suggests, but it sure was one of the better Baileys cocktails that i have tried. The food was nice ... at least the fish and chips and the sweet potato wedges that i had ... and so was the long island iced tea. I didn't really find anything negative to report about the place while i was there except for the fact that they didn't have a tv screen in the open yard. But later my friend (who paid the bill) mentioned that it was quite expensive ... £12 for fish and chips is not on. Maybe they are taking advantage of the football fever and i was ok with the amount being spent because i was watching a world cup match. I might go back once after the world cup to check on their regular day prices.
