I don't mind paying for great hair and this is what you will do at Togninis…read more While 6 years ago I was a devout customer of the edgier (and let's face it, younger) AKA Togninis, I've since spent years overseas, been a Bergdorf blonde, drunk whisky with a potty-mouthed but loveable snipper while getting the chop in a teensy two-person salon in the Lower East Side of NY, had my fair share of rubbish hair experiences and returned to Brisbane to settle into the chair of the slightly more grown up Togninis Hair Skin Body. And how quickly I have become comfortable in said chair. The totally luxe new salon is a haven which makes the somewhat time consuming task of getting beautiful an utter joy. It's a heady combination of light, glass, minimalism, massage chairs and a pleasing soundtrack. It lacks the grit and blue air of the LES hole in the wall I have so enjoyed frequenting, but it makes up for it in uber grown up glamness. From my first foray into grown up Brisbane hair land, I have been entirely satisfied with my stylist Ying-Sun and my colourist Nell. Ying-Sun brought the wave out in my previously kinky hair and Nell just understands when I want a bright, but not too cherry, red. When it comes to hair experiences, I have discovered that I am equally at home sipping macchiatos and reading Vogue as I am swilling whisky, petting a French Bulldog and reading Inked magazine. Even still, there is a high that a trip to Togninis delivers that trumps all. And don't we all just love a good trumping.

I used to be a regular back in the '90s, when it was still based in Edward Street, and attracted pretty much the best snippers and hippest clients around. Now, in its spacious swanky new hair salon-come-boutique in the buzzy, chi-chi James Street area, I thought it might have lost some of its edge. (Although, judging from the shelf which was absolutely heaving with the all awards it's won, I shouldn't have worried). I popped in there for a quick tidy up of my new, cropped hair and I couldn't have been more pleased with the cut I got. My stylist, Roxanne, spent ages looking through every layer of my bonce, checking the condition and texture. We then talked through what I was finding difficult with it (it was laying a bit too flat against my head), so she cut just the right amount (and length) of new layers in it to give it much more oomph. And make it easier to manage. Yes, it cost a lot ($100 for a senior stylist) but I've always been of the school of thought that you need to pay more than average for a quality haircut. Why? Chances are they won't be busy so the ticket is pointless anyway, you then take a seat and put your belongings in the little cupboard in front of the mirror. The Chinese lady who cut my hair was surprisingly friendly and attentive, we spent a few minutes discussing what I wanted done and then she was away! Cheapest and easiest haircut I've ever had :^)

Whilst visiting my daughter in the city we thought we'd get a quick and inexpensive haircut…read moretogether so popped into Stefan's in the Myer Centre. The counter was unattended but eventually a lady returned in a flap having ducked out to buy a father's day card for hubby, quickly explaining it was not for her father "who was in heaven" (bit of a downer to our happy mood). She fluffed around working out when they were available and finally told us to come back in half an hour. We quickly ate some lunch and rushed back only to be left sitting around for another 30 minutes waiting to be attended to. The same front counter lady (think she must have been the owner or manager) came over and loudly and repeatedly exclaimed how dry and terrible my hair was, in front of everyone. She said our appointments would cost $69. I said we just wanted a trim, our hair was already washed that morning and we did not need a blow dry. She said she had to wash my hair because it was so terrible and DRY that was the only way the hairdresser could see how to get an even cut and that the blow dry came with every haircut. We should have walked out then and there but she must have seen my daughter and I exchange bemused glances because she said she'd throw in a free conditioning treatment because after all I really needed it! We waited a bit longer and with people going everywhere she directed the girls to wash our hair and then whilst we were at the basins getting our 2 minute treatment she came over and berated them for not having us have the treatment in the chairs because they were busy and there's always a reason for what she says girls! I'm not exactly sure what the girls had done wrong and neither were they but her tone was belittling and made me feel small...and I was just the customer. The hairdresser who cut my hair was friendly and I think she did an okay job (but after all my hair is terrible so what would I know) however that haircut was the quickest I had ever had and took about 5 minutes tops. Then she got someone else to blow dry my hair while she cut my daughter's who had to remind her that she had forgotten to cut her fringe. Will not be going here ever again but my daughter and I did get a laugh about what a horrible experience all around it was - one we won't soon forget!

I asked for a trim and then got it quite a lot shorter with some layers, she talked me through the whole thing and before cutting each layer she held it up and showed me exactly how short it would be, this was so perfect for me because she could see how nervous I was to be going shorter.. She did a fantastic job, I am thrilled with the style and length. Definitely found my new hairdresser! Plus affordable! The cut was only $20! (and there is a great op shop a few shops away!)

I'm pretty sure it dates back to when I was a child, a hair dresser decided my also curly haired sister and I needed side burns. Yes side burns. On little girls. Screw you 80's. Anyway, long term scarring aside, I find it difficult to trust again so I was pretty cautious when I first visited Crow Hair on the recommendation of a friend. To start with the space and the staff are gorgeous. Hilarious owner (who is great at hair if you can get in to his busy schedule) and delightful girls who all seem to be stylish and talented and good at making frumps like me feel good. They are also very complimentary of my curl and never mention the tide mark of old colour invariably found in my locks, which is super polite of them. I walked out with straight hair (free, done as a challenge by the owner and probably not my best look - I looked like the love child of a real estate agent and a news anchor) but when I wet my hair I was relieved to see a really sensitive cut that kept my length but lifted weight off so my curl had a chance to, well, curl. Lots of great advice (I had no idea permanent colours contributed to breakage) and the prices are VERY reasonable compared to city salons. I'll go back within a much more sensible time frame I promise.

After living literally four houses away from this place for about three years I finally went in and…read moregot my hair cut and I wish I had gone sooner because then I wouldn't have spent the last three years of my life with bad hair. I went in on Wednesday and they were able to fit me in for an hour later for a cut. All the seats seem to always be full though so I think I was just lucky. The price was fantastic and way less than I was expecting. My only problem is that my haircut is so good that now I am TOO cute and it's affecting my life because I have too much self confidence now so I think maybe next time I'm going to ask for something uglier.
