Right here, at this vintage/punk inspired barber shop. At $25 for a full haircut it's more than I'd usually pay, but I have gone in and gotten a beard trim (back in the beardy days) and a neck shave for just $13 combined. I dig that kind of old-school pricing where you can get a couple of minor things done. The shop itself is awesomely decked out with skateboard gear, checkerboard tiles and a sweet graphic of a boxer (who could well be called 'Gentleman Jim') on the front shop window. Looking sharp!

Having been around the neighborhood for a couple of reasons and having thought about trying this place out before, I've never seen it not busy regardless of the date, time or weather. There are no appointments, so you just line up. This augurs well for the place's quality of service, but you do need to keep in mind that it will take some time, and that amount of time will be unpredictable. Lucky for me, on my initial visit I went mid-afternoon on a weekday and the wait was short (in the 10-15 minute range). The retro vibe of the place was interesting, and as an American looking for the best place to go around here, I noted a variety of Americana in their decor. Even in America, seeing a $2 bill would be unusual. Some of the memorabilia was also a tad NSFW, which doesn't bother me, but is just being mentioned as an FYI. The clientele is a diverse range of men and boys of many ages and persuasions, and it was a comfortable place to be in, one of those rare public spaces that caters specifically to men. The actual haircut was a necessity, as I'd let myself go for far too long, but also a source of some apprehension. I gave modest instructions and got something that met them and looked credible, but not boring. The price wasn't dirt cheap, but it seems in line with what a decent barbershop charges around here. The locale is outside of the heart of the city, but near a train stop and not terribly difficult to reach. All in all, I might well be using them for my barbering needs while I'm here without searching elsewhere, and I imagine I won't wait nearly as long for my next visit as I did for this one.

He was super kind, and professional. I was charged $40 due to it being a Sunday. He said that because he was trying something different on me, if I didn't like it and wanted it a bit shorter, I could come back within 48 hours and get it cut again at no extra charge. I thought was a great policy, I didn't think I would need to use it but my sister wanted my hair shorter for the Summer so I went back the next day after work and saw another man called Gio. Gio did an awesome job, shaved my sides down and got it a lot shorter like my sister wanted, it looked awesome as well as the first haircut. Gio did 10/10 job on the second haircut, attention to detail was perfect. Even put some wax in my hair and a hot towel for my face. Definitely coming back here.

Located in the heart of…read morethe QUT Kelvin Grove university campus, Ben's pricing caters well for students, with men's haircuts starting at $20. He also does women's haircuts/washes/foils etc, although I'm unsure of the pricing. From the outside, there is not much to be seen apart from some simple (and clever!) signage on the windows, however stepping inside, you'll find a very comfortable area that I believe was put together by Ben himself! Comfortable hairdressing chairs to sit in, and for those of you having a wash, Ben's wash basin is super comfortable too, supporting your head well and keeping pressure off your neck, which can be uncomfortable. Ben is super friendly, and very knowledgeable in all things hair related. You can show him photos of what you'd like, or explain it to him, and he will read your hair "qualities" and tell you if he thinks it would look good on you. I've had two completely differently styled haircuts from him, both excellent!
