But even if not, this is one of the best options if you need to do grocery shopping. It's a big store and the parking lot always pretty full. But there's always a spot. In summer you will be greeted by dozens of midges the moment you step out of the car - aggressive little buggers. So if you need to wait for somebody, best to stay in the car. There are mixed reviews about this shop. And at first glance one can see why. The store looks a bit dated, a bit run-down. And inside there are several shelves empty or at least close to being empty. But this is mainly because there's a huge number of visitors doing their shopping here, so naturally stuff gets sold out. And whenever we went, it was always packed here. But it is actually a very good store this one. We were suprised by the good quality of all the meat here (rump and sirloin steaks, lamb, bacon, duck) and the variety of the food. All real good value. Ok, the wine section didn't blow us away, but had some enjoyable stuff. We found what we've looked for: soda, water, milk, rice, pasta, veggies, fruits, crackers, bread, eggs, guacamole and hummus dip, wine, Prosecco. Made some enjoyable dinners out of these ingredients.

This is a good rural petrol station, located on the main road into Portree. It has a small shop…read moreattached which stocks a extremely good range of foodstuffs for the size of the shop. It has sweets and crisps (seems to stock every falvour imaginable), tinned goods, fresh sandwiches, newspapers and magazines Although it's primarily just a filling station (no garage attached) a lot of people go there for their daily papers too. And the schoolkids go there for lunch! It's very handy for tourists and people living at that side of Portree, as it saves a walk into the village to get the papers. And it's even open on a Sunday - which not everything in this area is.

There…read moreweren't that many cars on the road (we arrived from the north), only when we got closer, more and more cars drove by. But even very busy, this carpark has enough spaces. It's really just across the road from the path to the Fairy Pools. The fee is fair, there is a toilet on site and the car is in safe hands here. Surely your best bet when visiting the Fairy Pools. The alternative carpark is much further away.

There are plenty of spaces, even on a very busy day it was no problem to find a spot. Visitors come and go quite frequently. There's also a big public toilet right at the carpark. Parking fee was quite fair for such a popular spot. Spaces are big enough for SUVs as well. Special spots for RVs and such. From here there are two trails leading up to the Old Man. A short route (everybody takes this one) and a longer option. We did the short one to get up and to the long one down.

We found ourselves stranded with a flat tire at the Fairy Pools car park at 19:30 after a very rainy walk to and a wee dook in the fairy pools. Wet and cold, we had trouble getting any calls out for over an hour. By the time Donnie got to us, he had driven an hour on horrible roads to get to us only to find two miserable people and having to drive another hour in the wet and dark to get us and our car back to our stay in Staffin. Though it was quite late and he had already had an incredibly long day, he graciously and without complaint got us to where we needed to go. He helped us figure out what our next steps needed to be based on our location and who our car hire service was through. And throughout the hour-long drive he made great conversation with us, happy to answer all our questions about Scotland, life growing up on the Isle of Skye, culture past and present, his family .. anything and everything. He never once made us feel like a burden nor like annoying tourists nor like obnoxious Americans (we know many Americans can be!). By the time we got back to our stay, our moods had turned around and felt confident our problem with the car would be resolved in now time. This petrol station here is very conveniently located. It's in Broadford - the biggest town on Skye…read morenext to Portree. And it's right by the main road A87. Impossible to miss it. A big Co-Op is also right next to. The station is pretty big. Even though quite busy, it's moving all fast and the wait was short even at peak times. Prices were fair. Pump, pay inside at the counter and on your way you are. Also a good spot to fill up before leaving Syke, since chances are big that you'll pass by this petrol station.

When visiting the charming Fairy Glen, this parking here is the best option…read more It's not the biggest, but there were few spots available on that cloudy afternoon. The fee was only a few pounds, very fair priced. From here it's only a short 5-10min walk to the famous circles, the castle Ewen and all the sights and views. Since motorhomes do not really fit here (some did anyways, causing a bit of a mess), many visitors just do some roadside parking. Cars as well. But if you can fit in here, it would be for the best, because roadside parking on this narrow road just makes the traffic worse.
