So i usually use Turbo tax because it used to only cost 35.00. So this year i started my return with them. Then it gets to the total. 175.00 and on top of that somehow it got more complicated as well. Had to contact help 4x's !!! Never used to need to contact anyone. So i got very frustrated and didnt turn in my return through turbo tax I found freetaxusa. And started doing my taxes with them...not only did they come out with the same exact totals as turbo tax, the end cost for it was only 43.00 so i am SO HAPPY i found freetaxusa, i will be using them from now on. What has become of my day-to-day life that I am now giving 5 stars to something related to TAXES??? I suppose this is life, and whether a review is about food, a museum, a store or even something that helps you - gasp! - file your taxes, if the service is great, it deserves a shout out. Enter FreeTaxUSA, which I just used for the 4th consecutive year. I always saw the internet ads for these services and thought "why bother, I can file a form by myself:; yes, I can, but navigating the online access to both Federal and State was what my accountant had handled, and after selling my condo, I decided to enter the world of self-filing since some of my deductions and tax-challenges had changed. A friend of mine was faithful to TurboTax for years, but I heard her mention once that she paid $80 or so for it, and thought that was outrageous. Saw an ad for FreeTaxUSA, figured "why not", did a Fed filing in about 15 minutes (time will vary depending on whether you have deductions or not, are organized are not, etc) and it really was FREE. My next option was to file the Mass return with them, and I decided since I was already on their site AND my Federal return info would automatically transfer to the Mass forms, why on earth do I need another aggravation? I lightened my aggravation load by doing the state form with them (these are what they charge for, but doing a Fed return gets you 10% off the state), and after a few clicks, the state return was done. Grand total? About $11.50, a tiny amount to spend to make my life easier. HUGE bonus points to them for the ability to sign into your account, view past transactions, keep up on whether the Fed and/or State has accepted your return or just sign in for the hell of it. This is definitely the way to go, and until the day comes when I buy another home and (maybe) need the accountant back, FreeTax has my yearly business!! read more

This service is OK for basic tax prep. I would not subscribe to any of the extra services like Audit Defense or Pro. That portion of the service is a waste of time and money. It is extremely difficult to communicate with this company via chat regarding tax matters. They do not offer any phone support. The bottom line is they do not stand behind you or give solid concrete instruction on tax matters. It is all lip service and they use a lot of legal ease non sense to protect themselves. Any matter of complexity you have to go to a tax prep service. They have also provided a lot of miss information during tax prep. Good Luck. read more

There is no way for me to file my taxes. No way to get help. I have used this for several years. This year is much worse. When I log in, it insists I start all over. No email available . Only can mail them a letter. Better I find another tax service and start all over. read more

Doing tax returns boggles my mind and I find it super hard. Until now. (wow that sounds cliche') So many terms I have no clue about. This service was so simple I could not believe it. One was the process, super straightforward and easy to do/follow - step by step. Second, all along the way the popups when I needed an explanation were great. I got my taxes done and filed in less than 24 hours, mostly due to the site and also in large part because I did not have to tally tons of #s like I've before. Given what I know now I hope these people crush it business wise. (And to the company, please just keep being valuable (ie benefits/costs) and straight-forward.) This software has serious integrity issues. I received an audit from state and upon looking deep, I found that it was the result of this software incorrectly using an incorrect amount. I was hugely penalized from nj state along with 3 years of interest owed for understatement. Their audit assistance is also a sham, they simply tell you what the issue is, which anyone with basic education would understand from the audit report. They did not take any responsibility for the calculation error despite my clearly telling them what the issue is. I would not recommend this software to anyone for tax filing, they are not free first of all; you have to pay for audit assistance which is useless when reality hits and more importantly, there are calculation errors, which will land you into trouble. for 2018 I am switching to another software, atleast there is a peace of mind. read more

Never thought I would be writing a review for a tax service. Just finished two years of Federal/State taxes and couldn't be happier with the ease as well as how user friendly this tax service was. All I can say is Turbo Tax is a rip off that has a class action lawsuit against them by misleading people to think that certain filings are free. Tax Slayer is not secure in my opinion after having tax refund comprimised online which took over a year of phone calls and countless hours with the IRS straightening things out. FreeTaxUSA almost sounds like a phony website. I actually had to check the legitimacy having my IRS refund stolen a few years back dealing with Tax Slayer. There are some bad reviews for FREETAXUSA but all I can tell you is I was extremely satisfied of how the tax deductions and credits were broken down into simple formats that explained deductions and Tax laws I haven't understood for years. My taxes were actually rejected again because of a pin # issue but finally got resolved after I went back each time and looked at the explanation of why it was rejected. This is somewhat of a unique situation just because I have a pin # assigned every year by the IRS due to the Tax theft (believe me, that's a good thing). Lastly noted, FreeTaxUSA is very reasonable. If you have never filed your taxes before on your own I think you will be very impressed at the ease of filing. Unfortunately the state taxes can be more complicated than federal in my opinion but I found this fairly simple to navigate through. Will see how this works out after the refund is hopefully successfully deposited. read more

This is 4th year using them, and in the past they've been acceptable. This year however my NY pension information did not carry over to my state return, so I was taxed on my pension. I now have to file an amended return. Freetaxusa couldn't care less, they won't even credit the whopping $12 it cost me. Find another tax service. read more

I've been doing my own taxes for as long as I've had to file, and for several years, have used the on-line prep services from the list provided on the IRS site. This year I decided to try FreeTaxUSA. The software was easy enough, pretty much the same as TaxAct or any other on-line services I've used. I clicked to file both Federal (free) and State ($12.95). The next day, I got an e-mail that both were rejected due to a discrepancy between employer EIN and what the IRS had on file. I have two employers, they didn't tell me which one was the problem. So I went back into FreeTaxUSA, a simple process, and reviewed my return. Everything was accurate according to my W-2 forms, but, knowing how little glitches can happen, I erased the employer information and re-typed both employers and EINs. The next day I got another e-mail that the returns were rejected. I did the same thing, and then I went through it again the next day. So I gave up, mailed in a paper return to both Federal and State. As per the site, I sent an e-mail to customer service saying that I had given up, and asking what was the status of the $12.95, since they didn't actually file my state tax. No response. Imagine my surprise when I got my credit card statement and saw the $12.95 charge. I called the number on my credit card bill, and got a recording saying that customer service was only available by e-mail. I called my credit card company and disputed the charge.
