I believe the hesitation was to consider if it was "safe" to make the joke that he did. The shop is not a large space and I did not want to lose my temper and escalate anything, so I pretended to laugh and told him I needed my relatives' approval before buying anything. Well. I have a lot of racist relatives. They would defend this man. I won't. I will not give him money, theirs, mine, or anyone else's. It's sad to hear a local business owner and operator, otherwise welcoming, kind and polite, talk like that because it undoes his kindness--he's only willing to show it to people who look like he does. It's disturbing because this is not the screaming, overt racism of domestic terrorists and our government of 2026. it's insidious. It's literally in our mom and pop next door local businesses. I'm not going to repeat what he said. Doubtless, he has many excuses for it. I went back for a follow up visit to see what correction was needed, another prescription was written and again, the glasses were awful. I went back a third time, was finally listened to, and another new prescription was written. Not surprisingly, the third set of lenses were the worst of the three and absolutely unusable. I have requested my complete records back in order to move on to a new provider and I was told that my records now belong to Balin Eye & Laser Center and that I have to request my records in writing and pay $0.50 per page to have them copied before they will release them to me. Dr. Brown was nice but his prescription(s) weren't correct for me and my new glasses are totally useless to me. In addition, the entire office space and exam rooms are outdated and in need of updating at the very least. The patient use rest room had wall paper hanging off the walls and the ceiling fan was filthy with dust when I was last there. Good luck if you choose this eye care center.

I went back on 1800contacts.com and ordered more lenses when I got a reminder via email that I should be running out soon, good timing as I WAS running out. Placed the same order that I did last year.Today I got a notification that my lenses shipped, yay! I received a call from Ken's Eyewear at 7:50pm today, it was the owner telling me that I was no longer welcome in his business. Verbatim, "Never come back to my store again, you're not welcome here." He explained that I never returned for a follow up and that I was putting his license on the line. I was under the impression that he would have been able to decline the order had my prescription expired. I have insurance through work, so I would have happily returned for a follow up, had I been prompted. I've never felt disrespected by a medical professional before. If anyone has a recommendation for a respectable optometrist in the Valley, please point me in their direction. Until then, I'll stick with JCPenny in Holyoke.
