I came to Ezov seeking halloumi, my favorite cheese, seemingly hard to find in the US. While the halloumi wasn't quite the squeaky goodness you find across Europe, it was a tasty take on it, just a bit softer, the sauce was delectable. All of the dishes were very flavorful, I loved the crispness of the maitake and the flavor profiles of the kofta. The drink menu had some fun items, like an everything bagel tini which was delightful, and spot on. I love both a beet drink and mezcal, so the Tom Selek did not disappoint. If you like beets, go for it! The service matched the environment and price point, accessible and knowledgeable, yet not too overwhelming with check-ins while still friendly. The ambiance at Ezov is modern and trendy, the space is open and bright, however the music didn't match, it was too loud and quite clubby, and I love clubs, just not at dinner. read more

This place has potential. Every dish had a WOW taste. Unfortunately our server gave us no helpful advice. When asked, she said "everything is good." The plates are meant to be shared so we ordered five plates for three of us. The plates we chose were individually great but in combination not excellent. One plate was too small for three of us to share and two of the plates were so rich that the portions were too large. The bread served with the hummus dishes is more like a fluffy dinner roll and no other option is available. On the plus side, we asked our server if the music volume could be lowered so we could enjoy the outdoor patio. The answer was a prompt yes. (Does any restaurant get requests for louder music? Do people want to shout over dinner?). Of course, the next time we go, we will know better how to order. It's only the first time experience that is the problem. We went on a Saturday night and our one server had five tables to attend and there was only one valet attendant. I hope this place succeeds and can up their service game. Rounding up from 3.5 stars. I'll start by acknowledging there are some factors that may be working against Ezov in my book. I frequent Ezov's sister restaurants so I figured the Mediterranean offshoot would be a hands down winner. Also, the space used to house one of my favorite Austin restaurants, Pitchfork Pretty, so I hoped it would be a worthy replacement. Ordered the crudo, halloumi, hummus + pita, tilefish, chicken shawarma and some drinks. The albacore crudo was the best of the bunch with an interesting flavor combination. I was surprised that the $16 hummus didn't come with pita and had to be added on. Another disappointment was when the tilefish arrived and it was fried which wasn't mentioned on the menu. The most notable part of the dining experience was the vibrant colors and beautiful plating of the dishes. I doubt I'll return as nothing I ate or drank really stood out which is a bummer at the price point (~$200 for 2 people). read more

I sat at the bar for a solo date my first time here and was well-attended to. Unfortunately, when I returned with a friend, it took so long to get cocktails. Food was well-timed but the beverages took so long that we went to another bar in the area when we would have stayed and continued drinking had they been more timely. Came with a group of 8 for the prefixe menu and left sorely disappointed, especially given the Emmer & Rye group is behind the restaurant and we had chosen the place based on the strong reviews. The ambiance is OK, decorations and vibe are decent but music is too loud to actually allow for there to be any meaningful communication between groups. As an example, none of us could ever hear what the servers were saying to us. We had made a request for vegetarian accommodations for one person including picking out only menu items specific for vegetarians and they still brought out lamb butter with the Frena bread / i.e. did not actually provide vegetarian dishes to the vegetarian. The worst part? The food was terrible. I do not say this lightly as most of the reviews I leave skew 4 or 5-star, but this experience represented the worst that Austin had to offer. Overpriced and massively underdelivered - maybe the key chefs were sick that day and the replacement had no idea how to cook but this was probably the worst "Mediterranean" food I've ever had and feels like the kitchen just dumped a gallon Morton's salt on everything before sending it out. The Crudo was largely flavorless. The Smashed Cucumber was terribly oversalted. The Cauliflower was oversalted. Falafel was oversalted. Hummus was way oversalted; biting into one of the oyster mushrooms tasted like you just bit into a tablespoon of salt. The Frena bread was WAY oversalted Wagyu was overcooked and oversalted This was not an isolated taste bud incident; our entire table left very dissapointed with how the food came out. The only decent items that came out were the desserts - Coconut Malabi and Baklava were balanced, unique, and flavorful. I can speculate as to how a "fine dining" restaurant managed to completely massacre their attempts at making food - perhaps they figured everyone needed more salt to recover from the 106 degree summer days but if unless they figure this out, save yourself a hundred bucks and go buy a gallon of salt at Costco instead of eating at Ezov. read more

Was super excited to be in Austin and try Ezov. The ambiance is vibey and decorated really nicely. The food was great, particularly the bread, hummus and Texas steak. My feedback is regarding the service. Very slow in making drinks, coming to the table and not friendly. Our waitress was extremely rude about a light that kept moving to the side. I believe she thought we kept moving it, but it was because the AC was blasting on it. She kept coming over saying what are you guys doing, moving it back, only to find it would continue moving to the side. After the 5th time doing it, she came over "what are you guys doing over here, you guys gotta go" wether it was a joke or not, it made us feel really weird and not great. This in addition to not great service all night was really disappointing. Came here with a friend with a pretty restrictive diet (needed to avoid onions, garlic, sesame), and they were able to accommodate him pretty well overall. That being said, I didn't get to experience as much as normally would since he couldn't really share many of the menu items. Tom Selek - I ordered this mezcal beet drink and really liked the flavor. I love mezcal, but the mezcal flavor wasn't overpowering, the beet flavor was just the right amount, and there was a slight spicy kick to the drink as well. Hummus + Frena - This appetizer overall was really great. It came with two butters (one was vegan, the other was lamb fat butter). The butters were delicious but sort of unnecessary since there was so much hummus. The hummus was very creamy, the toppings in it added texture and different flavors. The frena was excellent, very fluffy bread, slightly crispy on the outside. My only issue is that the frena had to be ordered as extra, and there still wasn't enough of it for the amount of butter and hummus on it. Also, we weren't offered more frena until the end of the meal, when we still had half of our hummus left. I wonder if anything gets served with the hummus if you don't order frena... Opah - I've never had an Opah before, so I was definitely curious about it. It had a very meaty texture (like a tuna), but was really quite good. The sauce (I think chraimeh) was delicious, I only wish there was more of it on my dish. The leafy vegetables that came with it didn't make sense, and the peppers were half burnt unfortunately, so even though the dish was tasty, I felt like I was eating an incomplete dish. I did like that they took styles from various middle eastern and African places and incorporated these elements into their dishes, but I did come away feeling I was missing that special oomf in the dishes I got. Went here for date night on a Sunday. The parking lot is free for all on a Sunday but is valet only Wed-Sat. I was worried the music would be too loud but it was fine. Service was on point. The cocktails were balanced and excellent. Most of them reminded me of a spiked wellness shot or fresh pressed juice. We got the Make It Snappy, Caramel Market, and the Tom Selek. Crudo - very good but if you come with a group of 4, you should order two Smashed Cucumber - must get. I usually hate cucumbers but this was the perfect summer dish. The labneh was the best part. Halloumi - liked it. Get it. Very bold in flavor. Again, order two if you come with more than 2 people. Falafel - probably the best falafels I've ever had but they're huge! The tahini sauce was a bit one note so we dipped them in the labneh and cucumbers. Frena - This dish was my least favorite. Fresh bread and butter is usually a table favorite but this horseradish beets and butter pairing wasn't exciting (probably just our palate because other people seem to rave about this dish). We ended up dipping the bread in the halloumi and crudo dish instead. Chicken Shawarma - amazing. The chicken was juicy and succulent and the giant pita was great. The tangy pickled cabbage and fixins was the perfect accompaniment. This was the perfect size for two people. If you come with a group, you definitely need to order two. I have been interested in trying Ezov for a while. I would potentially return with a smaller group to try other items that were not on a pre-fixed menu. We made reservations for a party of 12 for NYE at 7:45pm, after waiting for about 20 mins I checked in with the hostess to see how much longer the wait would be and was met with a snippy "soon" as if I inconvenienced her. I'm not sure what time we were seated but what was to be expected from the prefixed menu was not really explained initially. Our server, Maggie, was nice & had a positive attitude for our large party. I believe some of us had a second round of drinks before any food came out. From the time stamp on each photo the first course of food was not out until 9pm for our 7:45pm reservations. The main course, the lamb, which was absolutely delicious was on the table at 10pm and dessert at 10:45pm. Overall, with consideration of large parties being challenging, I would be hopeful that the timing on the food would have been much closer to our reservation time with a pre fixed menu and that the entire experience would not have been 3 hours where our bill was doubled by filling gaps between food with additional beverages. read more

Super delicious Mediterranean restaurant in East Austin - one of the best in the city. The restaurant itself is spacious and modern with colorful and tasteful decor. Meal is family style and is perfect for trying many of their dishes. We ordered the Hummus Ful with stewed Egyptian fava beans, tahini, green t'atbila, which comes with a tasty bread. For gluten-free option, I ordered the pickles and spicy plate, which was surprisingly tasty with dips that accompanied many of the other dishes well. For more main dishes, we ordered the crudo, which was accompanied by pistachio and pomegranate. While it was one of the milder dishes, it was beautifully presented. Our two favorites were the charred cabbage, which came with labne, fresno chile, and a tomato sauce; as well as the sabich, an eggplant dish with israeli salad, tahini, fried egg and puff pastry. All dishes exceeded expectations, and I hope to come back either to order the same dishes or try some of the others. Everything was very flavorful and you could tell that it was made with high quality ingredients. The halloumi and Texas wagyu were my favorite - the halloumi tasted so fresh and not hard at all, and the wagyu had an excellent muhammara on the side that really brought out its flavor. The only con is that I found everything a little pricy for the portion size, but it is a great place to go for a special occasion. I had a great experience at Ezov! I heard Ezov was from the creators of Emmer and Rye which is a favorite place of mine. From the ambiance to the food it was all well done. Ezov can be very intimate for date night or friends catching up. The food is all family style. Here is the ranking of everything my friend and I ate: halloumi, falafel, Baklava, Texas wagyu, smashed cucumbers, crudo. All the dishes were so balanced. The halloumi was rich, and paired well with the date molasses and spices. Falafel was herb forward and so crispy the 3 sauces they gave enhanced it so well. The baklava was different but not aggressively sweet. The caramelized bananas and crispy pastry shells worked very well. Texas Wagyu was well cooked and the seasoning is za'atar spice forward. It came with sunchokes but I found the sunchokes still on the raw side (they were pretty crunchy). The smashed cucumbers were well balanced kind of surprised that labne and cucumbers tasted good together. The crudo was my least favorite. I found it having too many ingredients which overwhelmed the fish and you couldn't taste it. This is a personal thing but I think a few of dishes were overwhelmed with herbs. They didn't add much flavor but added freshness to the dish. I did not rank the Frena (my opinion but it's like if a ciabatta roll married pita bread) because I love bread. The Frena went well with everything it came with lamb butter and didn't really taste the lamb. The service was really great. I'm happy to have an Israeli based Mediterranean place in town. My perspective is coming from someone who's spent months in Israeli and have explored a lot of the country. The food at Ezov is overpriced, smaller portions and generally over complicated versions of everything you order. The crudo was great, as most others have mentioned. Pistachios with pomegranate seeds were delicious along with perfectly cut fish. The hummus was the most disappointing item we ordered, especially because if you want it with bread (Freda) it's $20. There is more eggplant than chickpea in this entree. It frustrated me how expensive this dish was and how little actual hummus you receive. Hummus is not expensive to make, there is no need to charge $16 without bread for this entree. The falafel w tahini sauce was good, but had more cumin then I've ever tasted before. The cumin overwhelmed the falafel, so had to drown it with the sauce. Another big frustration was the $28 Kofta. You get one skewer and more of the Mediterranean blend of eggplant here. When the waitress asked us if we wanted to take half of our Fenta to go and said yes she rolled her eyes at us. Even with how frustrated we were with the cost and portion size we were never anything other than good patrons, so the eye roll was the cherry on top for us not to come back here. If you ever want to start an argument of biblical proportions, ask a table full of folks from different middle eastern and Mediterranean countries who invented hummus. The myriad cuisines of these regions have mixed and influenced each other greatly for millenia, so it's not surprising the origins if certain dishes are hotly disputed. I knew before I set foot in the place the menu would absolutely SLAP, given its owners are behind Canje and Hestia. The shawarma and kofte were beautifully roasted and dripping with slightly sweet, but complex sauces. The kohlrabi and cucumber salad on lebneh were crunchy and perfectly tart. Pita was buttery and soft, and the creamy malabi was delicately seasoned with rose and pistachio. Cocktails and mocktails had a lot of nuance and comp plex flavors too. There were also hints of carribean influence throughout the meal as well, and lemme tell ya, Israeli with a hint of Guyanese is pretty damn dope. Ezova provides a fun take on Mediterranean food in with a chic environment to call home during your meal. The Whipped Feta with the Frena Bread was a stand out for the meal, and we even requested more of the bread to indulge in. I was surprised by how much I liked the smashed cucumbers because I normally stray away from cucumbers but their plating and garnished intrigued me and did not disappoint. I thought that the Falafel, while good, was on the sidelines of the meal. A quick note on the service, when we started our meal at 5 p.m. it was snappy and our waitress was bringing out our food at the perfect time but when they started to get busy our waitress disappeared a bit and I had to ask if the Eggplant Sabich was still coming. Because we had to wait so long for the Eggplant Sabich by the time it was there we were less interested in it, so it ended up being a bit of a dud. What?!?! Cabbage can taste that good? This place deserves a visit to change your mind about cabbage alone. Listen- I'm fine with cabbage. I'm not a brassica beloather. But I've never been blown away by cabbage. We had ordered only small plates: hummus with crudités and frena (think crispy crust soft inside pita like bread), crudo, smashed cucumber, and cabbage. The crudo was TART, and I like a lemon. I think it's almost there. Maybe mine was just a one off because it was lacking salt but I don't think I'd order it again (unless I knew mine was just an off dish). The frena was good and as much as I like horseradish I didn't feel like the horseradish butter accompaniment balanced the rest of the dishes. The smashed cucumber was great. Creamy, crispy, tart, with a little spice. So good. But the start- that's cabbage. Everything I would want from a veg. I will go back for the cabbage alone! Ambiance was nice, staff was great.
