Located at Calle Ciscar 5 in Valencia, Horchateria Fabian is a family run operation known for their housemade Horchata and Fatrons plus Buñuelos at holidays, the space far less touristy than Santa Catalina with a better selection of items though far less accessible to those who do not speak Spanish.
No doubt a locals place, a 09h00 Monday arrival by car finding street parking available and only two patrons present, one a pre-teen Spaniard busy dipping Fartons into a jumbo Horchata and the other an American exchange student who thankfully proved capable of translating English to ownership, it was after finding out that Buñuelos are only offered at select times of the year that the decision was made to order three alternative items plus one Horchata, the total bill just under €10 and the Tiger Nut-based beverage far less cloyingly sweet than the one experienced a day earlier.
Told that the daily special Sandwich was crunchy Calamari with Aioli, admittedly tempting but passed up due to substantial dining plans for later, it was instead with a warm Empanada that breakfast got started, the interior stuffed with sautéed Spinach and White Cheese creamy and well seasoned with the all-butter pastry golden brown, crisp and flaky.
Checked upon more than once by staff, the presence of someone with a camera who spoke no Spanish clearly a curiosity, it was following the youngster's lead that a fluffy Farton piped with Chocolate was dunked into the Cold Chufa and Sugar with great effect, the baton holding its shape even after soaking up its share of liquid while the charred Apple Cake was rustic in all the right ways with a creamy custard base and layers of fruit that were still snappy and only naturally sweetened. read more
