Despite this though, I usually manage to pick up an item or two and I even managed to get a couple of Christmas presents from them this year. Like most charity shops you really need to have quite a sharp eye given the fairly random arrangement of items on the shelves, although at least they do manage to get the clothing together, the DVD's together and such like. Worth a look if you're passing and I generally make a bee line here when I'm in the area.

And if you're my hubby - you want to buy the same style time after time. That's where this Tommy Hilfiger shop excels. The styles of khakis/chinos, jeans, button down shirts rarely change year to year; which means what you buy will stay in style for ages and if you do need to replace a favourite item - chances are it's still being made - or at least something very similar. So, when he needed a fresh pair of smart looking khakis we bypassed the department stores and went straight to the source. This dedicated shop has the biggest selection of Tommy Hilfiger around for men and women - more styles, more colours, more sizes than other places in town and lots of items on sale as well. In fact, they seem to have more in back than on the floor and the helpful sales assistant was happy to make a fuss over us and search out every style and colour of khakis in my hubby's size. Some had slimmer profiles. Some had a more athletic cut - it was surprising what looked so similar actually did have different fit. Finally, after several attempts we found perfection combination of cut and colour resulting in a happy hubby and a happy salesman (and a delighted, somewhat exhausted, wife). During the trying and retrying of the khakis, I did have a peek upstairs at the women's department. Very preppy, very classic and definitely not my style; there also seemed to be less of a selection than downstairs for the men. But, again, probably more Hilfiger Women's clothing than you would find elsewhere. All in all, a pleasant and successful shopping experience. We even got an invite to an evening soiree launching the new season; and some socks. Can't forget the socks!

I LOVE homeware stores - between my constant DIY projects and frequent, spontaneous need to repaint walls in my house, I was tickled pink to find a paint shop/homewares store closer to the house. Plus, I quite enjoy the Habitat stuff... sure it's a little knock off hipstery but the prices are far better than real hipstery items and I really like how darn cheerful the throw pillows are. All the makings of a solid four star review... except... The two times I've been here so far, the service has been dreadful. Besides one very lovely lady in the curtain section (thank you!), it's even bordered on rude. I'm not sure if I have to up my adulting game and wear high heels to look less like a 12 year old when shopping for home supplies, because I apparently do not look like someone who would spend money on things. This is mainly down to an interaction in the Habitat section: I've been trying to find an interesting bookshelf to host my ever growing library and one caught my eye in this section. It had a cute little matching desk/storage, which happens to be #2 on my "to buy" list. The gal in the section was helping another lady at the time, so I waited for my turn. When she finished with the other lady (who was quite a bit older and very well dressed), she turned to where I had been standing for the last five minutes, looked me straight in the eye... and walked away. I was so perplexed that it would have been funny, had it not been irritating as all heck. What does one do in that situation? Run after them? Call out? I understand she may have been going on break but it would have taken all of 15 seconds to acknowledge me and call someone else over. Needless to say, I did NOT buy the bookcase and left with a sour taste in my mouth. So, I will continue to come here because of my need to paint things pretty colours, but this spot isn't taking a #serviceninja stamp any time soon...

I also had products taken out of my hands multiple times and was told I was putting things back incorrectly. My family owns an art gallery and I have the utmost respect for small business (which is why we visited this shop), but I was so upset by the accusation that I was going to steel from her that I put 100 pounds worth of product back on the shelf and left.

To be honest, I doubt anyone really knows exactly what is stocked among all the floor-to-ceiling pens of various shapes and sizes, but I've always found what I needed when I've shopped here. But the best thing about this family-run place are all the little extras. Being family-run, the service is always friendly and attentive, and they're more than happy to go hunting high and low to find whatever it is you're after. But the best thing about it is that the mum of the family also offers a clothing alteration service too. Unfortunately for me, I'm not exactly a domestic goddess when it comes to sewing on buttons or fixing hems, so this place is an absolute gem in that respect.

The Box part of the name is pretty appropriate for this wee record shop, as it's not the biggest of…read moreplaces. It does a lot with it's small space though, with a hell of a lot of stock to spend some time browsing through. If you're on a budget go to the back of the shop, where there is a bargain basement section. When I was there they had a special 50p for everything deal, but normally I think prices are pretty decent. I didn't have a big look through here, but this looked like the usual shelf-fillers you get in most second hand stores - the greatest hits of Bread in about half dozen different front covers, and lots of 70's and 80's stuff. The key thing here is that everything is all fairly priced, so it's cheap enough to take a punt on. The main space is set up for new records, and quality second hand stuff. I couldn't see a huge new releases section (I couldn't see a section for stuff out that week, for example), but there was good selection of newer releases, and a solid local offering. There were boxes upon boxes in this area, and i don't know what the deal is with opening up the ones at the bottom - a wee bit more space may actually be a help if it means they can get more stock up and visible. Finally, a sale selection had some genuine bargains - in fact, the prices were pretty fair throughout the whole shop. Special shout to the guy behind the till, who was really friendly. All told, this is a great wee record store, and one that would definitely reward some serious browsing time.

On the one hand, it's always great to see local retailers and designers being supported locally. And although I'm no art conoisseur there was some gorgeous stuff on display - mainly paintings and sketches of Scottish scenery - and I was surprised at how reasonably-priced some of it was. However, I did get the impression that in the huge big room of stalls and stands there were only about 3 or 4 different categories of things being sold. If you're the kind of person who loves browsing stall after stall of almost identical-looking glass jewellery or silver-plated chokers with semi-precious stones on them then you'll be in heaven here. Otherwise, you probably won't need to spend mor than 15 minutes or so here. That said, if you're in the area on the first saturday of every month then you should pop in for a browse.

However, some of the sellers are well established and also sell elsewhere in town. There are some lovely homeware and gift items such as art prints, lots of jewellery, knitted crafts, clever wooden items and ttweed purses, cafetieres etc. This market is not well advertised, as like others, I came across it by chance one day. The hall location is good for all weathers and for picking up Morningside foot traffic when the sign is out. However, the downside is that there are so many good home and giftware shops in the Morningside and Bruntsfield area, that they have a lot of competition.
