Huge range of guitars, amps, drums, pianos, keyboard and electronic musical instruments set over two floors. I have purchased a few guitars from here over the years they have always been really helpful and accommodating helping me get the exact set up for what I needed. The guys behind the counter always seem knowledgeable on the products they stock too.....so I would say this is a great stop for someone who is maybe not so musically minded looking to get a gift. I dont play as much as I should anymore but when I need strings/any other accessories I would definately look here first. I bought my first guitar from here in 1996, and I reckon they've been going since the late eighties. Downstairs you'll find a range of acoustic instruments including guitars, woodwind, acoustic basses and a really well stocked accessories cabinet. Fair Deal are often are the first to get some gear in here before other guitar shops, which is proof that they are on the ball, probably attending trade shows and reading trade magazines to keep a good level of product knowledge. Upstairs is dedicated to all thing rawwwwk! with electric guitars and basses and a range of effects pedals from leading and new manufacturers. As the name suggests, the prices are fair! I picked up a Boss Portable Recording Studio that you can record, mix, and master songs with, then burn them to a CD-R to play in a CD player. It was £150 less here than the next best price elsewhere. Keep your eye out for end-of-the-line or discontinued equipment and you can bag a bargain like I did. The staff are friendly too. Expect a quip at the counter, and prepare one yourself, as it might endear you to the staff and pave the way for some haggling, or result in a guitar pick being thrown in to add value to whatever you are buying. read more

This is a great music shop with friendly staff and a great selection of guitars and other instruments. Now some music shops are not nice places to be, they are almost like museums where the staff dagger you to make sure your not touching anything. Fair deal is not like that at all. Your free to pick up and try any instruments and to be honest that's what's lead to every one of my purchases from there. Downstairs is acoustic, brass, wind and percussion along some with accessories like straps and sliders. They also have a great selection of books for beginners to advance songbooks. Upstairs is where the action is, all the electric bass and guitars from all the best bands you can think of, even some you may not heard of before. The selection of amps is great too, and the staff are more than happy to set you up with a guitar and amp selection of your choice to check out the tones possible that setup. The offer to set up instruments at the counter for you and always throw in some little freebies for good will to get you going, nice one guys. read more

Fairdeal music doe what it says on the tin - in that you can buy musical paraphernalia at a fair price. This is good. They've been around for as pretty much as long as I can remember in Birmingham, so that's always a good sign. The staff are always honest and helpful, and like I said, you won't get ripped off. The only down side really is that it is pretty small - you're not going to find everything you need in here for all your musical needs by any stretch of the imagination - unless you're just after a few guitar strings or other basics. It's always a bit hit & miss what instruments they have in stock too - so it's always worth having a look in every now and then if you're looking for something specific. But all-in-all they're helpful, genuine and do indeed offer a fair deal. read more

Definitely a fan of this place, even when I don't buy instruments (lets face it, I can't always afford a new guitar *one day*), I come here and have a good look at the shiny! Good selection of strings, lubes, locking straps, picks, cables and patches. My absolute fave thing about fair deal is: Every now and then you find something mind-blowing! I visited this shop recently with my boyfriend we went on a Sunday morning and the shop was pretty quiet although I'd imagine Saturday daytime and afternoon would be very busy. Fair Deal Music is split into different sections which are laid out depending on the type of instrument, we went in the area that is specifically for guitars. The stock is well laid out and you can pick up instruments to try them out without feeling like you need to ask permission. Luckily as there were hardly any customers we didn't have to worry about any dodgy renditions of Smoke on the Water! As my boyfriend knew specifically what he was after we didn't deal with any staff until we got to the till. He bought a Gretsch G5122 and a guitar slide. The prices in here are pretty comparable with other stores and the Internet. I couldn't see any deals or special offers on show on our visit but when we were at the counter my boyfriend asked if there were any bundles or deals on and got a gig bag thrown in for free, so it pays to ask! We were on a short visit there so we didn't ask for the guitar to be set up therefore I can't comment on how well they provide that service. Although I don't play any instruments myself I have visited this shop before to buy ear plugs as I am an avid gig goer. I knew the style of earplugs that I was after.The gentleman who served me also showed me some alternative products. I liked that he didn't come across as trying to hard sell a higher priced item to meet sales targets. I bought the item that I asked for as that particular style suits my needs but if I was shopping in there and didn't really know what I was after I would ask for their recommendations. I have found on these two different experiences that it doesn't matter if you are buying something for under a tenner or an item for hundreds of pounds the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. read more

The main guitar shop in Birmingham used to be Richer Sounds (formerly known as Musical Exchange, latterly called Reverb) which eventually priced itself out of the market and shut. One experience to illustrate this: One Christmas I wanted to buy our drummer a cowbell. Reverb showed me a tiny cowbell for £30 and blamed the recession. The bloke at Fairdeal rolled his eyes at this tale and sold me a massive cowbell for £15. I've a feeling things like this have helped Fairdeal Music survive whilst other such as Reverb (and lately it seems, City Music) have gone to the wall. Unless you fancy the walk down to PMT, Fairdeal is probably the only decent sized musical equipment shop in the city centre; selling guitars, amps and pianos. This the place I use to stock up on plectrums, patch leads and the other little bits of ephemera a guitarist is always losing or breaking. The prices are always pretty good and the staff never less than welcoming and helpful. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I would give NO STARS if it was permitted. Purchased a supposedly brand-new electronic drum kit online. Soon became evident from the poor condition of the packaging and the visible wear and tear marks on the drum pads that the kit was infact SECOND-HAND. The set was also missing its throne and bass pedal - stated as being inclusive of the drum package. The module and other elements had to be returned because of being faulty, only for them to get 'lost' in the post (staff reported as to having no recollection of me stating items were defective - it was them who initially requested me to return them!). Staff were extremely rude, unhelpful and lied throughout the entire process. I also bought a 'new' electric guitar alongside the drum kit order, only for this to arrive as well in a sorry state - packaging badly damaged, deep scratches to the guitar and parts absent. Staff again were extremely unhelpful by having no determination to rectify the situation - outrageous considering the vast amounts of money spent on the two instruments. I have had a terrible experience overall and would strongly advise people to avoid this company at all costs. Good luck if you are currently pursuing problems with this business - I am obviously a nuisance to them now asking for what I have paid for and, as a result, have had my email address blacklisted! read more

I had a great experience with Fair Deal Music and I would recommend them to everyone. They are humans! And they treat customers as humans, with a personal touch. I agree and I've seen how customers have treated them like machines (everything should be perfect! but humans aren't!) and guess what, they've treated them accordingly. They never disrespect anyone but don't expect them to go out of their way for you. I really don't understand how people can go around making other peoples days miserable because of they're unrealistic expectations.
