They have film, books with indexed information, a large area is dedicated to genealogy and history. This was a very helpful visit and great experience. If you have time because you'll need it and your family comes from Virginia this is a good place to find information. The staff is friendly and helpful giving you pointers, they can lead you to locating information. I was able to find a document from the early 1800s regarding the marriage of my ancestors, it was amazing. This Library offers more than just books for you to view it offers a window into history, life and Virginia the good and the bad.

They are friendly, efficient, helpful and definitely more pleasant than the university kids sleeping in the booths or hiding behind dry eraser boards. The library itself is like a museum: clean, bright, organized and wide open. It is a terrible place to crash in the evening to catch some zzzz because the pedestrian traffic keeps your head spinning. The people watching potential is off the charts. We have got some strange humans walking amongst us! If someone wants to educate themselves on any topic, this library is the place to do it. I consider Cabell Library my 2nd home. Any day the front desk personnel will kiss me when they see me to welcome me hone.

The last few times I've gone, I've noticed that their set up is a bit strange. I've had to go to the nonfiction section twice for fiction books because the catalog said they were there. Another time, the book I was looking for was missing (which isn't the library's fault). The people who work here are really kind and knowledgeable. They will help you and give you good tips. On the lost book occasion, the librarian checked four possible places for me, spending about 30 minutes hunting down the book before helping me put a hold on another copy. This library has a lot of potential. For example, I'd love if they offered a hot and new section, or put more popular/genre displays up. I love the Westover Hills Richmond Library because they showcase the hottest reads which inspires me to read even more. I think the Main Library could benefit from some reorganization. Besides this, it's a great space. They have wonderful rooms to rent out (I've seen RVA Rapid Transit's Mobility University held in a great space here). They also have a lovely garden in the back. It's a huge library with a lot of great potential.

But, I weathered the traffic, and came down here recently for a friend's art exhibit. It was an elegantly laid out arrangement of her work and I was impressed with the other artwork there too! Some of the rooms were designated with various artist's pieces and the exhibits were thoughtfully planned. I was excited to view my friend's creativity and I was equally impressed that the library gave her and other local talent a platform to display and sell their work. The Dooley Foyer is the perfect venue for these amazing artists to share their imagination with the community. This building itself is large and well laid out. They offer computer access, photocopy services, meeting and event rooms, and classes. A world of wonder and learning awaits you in the library! Just sign up for a library card and use it at any Richmond City branch. It's right on Westover Hills Blvd. near Devonshire rd. ***EXPERIENCE*** I always have a good experience here. It's an easy spot to walk or bike to. They have a good amount of bike lock space and a little parking lot behind it. The librarians who work here are very kind and helpful. It's a smaller library, but has most of the good stuff (at least in regards to what I'm trying to read). Like all libraries, you can put a book on hold or have a book sent to this library if it's not at this location. They have computers for their online catalog. They also have quite a few computers you can log into for personal use. This library is a great spot to get some work done or (surprise) read a book. I love all the natural lighting that spills into this space. ***PRICE*** It's free! It's a library. It can be a little overwhelming as there isn't really a rhyme or reason to the arrangement of the books. They also have a few toys and interactive play areas as well. The adult section is a little bland. The books are dated. I often have to have books delivered from another Library because they usually don't have it here. They do have a large magazine area with comfy oversized chairs. This library is outdated in comparison to its sister location at Atlee and could benefit from a refresh. The librarians are always super friendly and willing to help.

We only ventured to their children's section that is offset from the library. Their storytime is wonderful, the lady who reads the books to the children does a wonderful job, she is very engaged. She reads about 3 books based upon a theme and at the end the children do a related craft, very cute! The children's area itself is very nice, their are several computers for children to learn/play complete when headphones. Several areas for them to sit and read and lots of toys/gadgets, very nice. As much as I loved this place the first time I expected my second visit to be just as wonderful. Unfortunately, we missed storytime due to a mix up in time but my friend and I decided to let our children stay in the children's area. After an hour someone from the library came to us and asked us if we could be a little quieter. Seriously?! Yes, this is a library but we are in the children's section and if children laughing is a bother why attempt to cater to young children, needless to say, we left shortly after. I've visited on numerous occasions and i always find it to be quiet, clean, and full of a great selection of books. The librarians are eager to help and are always pretty friendly. You always hand the option to have books transferred in or to call if you be late getting your books back. Which is great because.... One drawback.... there is no outdoor book drop. I know right!

The people there were louder than necessary. Talking as if they were at home. Listening to music on the headphones attached to the computer but so loud everyone could hear. The librarians are super friendly and willing to be of service, there is great programming for the kids, myself and my teens have enjoyed opportunities to volunteer and teach there, it is a place of refuge for some when the weather is severe, there are classes for adults, and I remember it being even noisier before the computers, because it was filled with KIDS that were always, always welcome and catered to! BTW~there hasn't always been a security guard (who is also very helpful and kind!), but for a long while there has been a metal thing at the door that beeps if someone has books that haven't been properly checked out. I could be wrong, but I do not believe it is a metal detector. Please come give it another look with new eyes to really see the beauty that's going on.
