Bishop Furman Stough [who blessed my confirmation] dedicated the church where it is currently located in 1986. This location is also home to the Ascension Episcopal Day School. Father Jack Alvey became Rector in 2018. I had seen Fr. Alvey at our Diocesan Council weekend in Nauvoo, AL and at the last Alabama Bishop's election at the Cathedral Church of the Advent. Both events were attended by 100s and I did not get to speak to Fr. Alvey. In 2019, Father Alvey baptized my three Godchildren, my stepdaughter and her two babies! Father Jack opened the church on this beautiful fall Saturday, and was such a wonderful, thoughtful host, as he performed the baptisms flawlessly at the beautiful alter, without anyone shedding a tear (and the grandchildren were little at the time) except for me -- tears of joy! Father Jack answered our questions about the church and showed us around. Despite the quality of my pictures, it really is a beautiful church with a massive organ, and a lovely nave. The Memorial Garden is lovely and serves as a "columbarium" of sorts, where members' ashes can be sprinkled and the departed can be memorialized with their information on a plaque. On the anniversary of their baptisms, I purchased arrangements for the alter to honor their baptisms and each year I did this, the arrangements were lovely and the transactions were seamless. He is an excellent preacher and teacher, and he clearly has a real heart and compassion for people. He is also very strong in the area of leadership and business, which gives the church a powerful balance of ministry and practical impact. The Worship Center at the Derby Campus is very family oriented and the facilities are very nice. The praise and worship is excellent, and the overall atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and full of life. The campus pastor is also doing an awesome job, and you can tell there is strong leadership throughout the church. What really stands out is what they do for kids and families. The programming is strong, and it feels like a place where people at every stage can grow and be supported. Beyond that, they also care deeply about the community. Whether it is through the church itself or through their community development corporation, if there is something they can do to help uplift people, they do it. If you live in Birmingham or anywhere in this area, I would absolutely encourage you to visit their website, drop in for a service, and see it for yourself.
