The basement at Fairway on East 86th Street is a treasure trove of goodies for foodies. Live lobster, jumbo shrimp and Nom Wah frozen dim sum. One bag of Nom Wah crystal shrimp dumplings are $27 in the frozen food section. I thought it was expensive but the dumplings looked so perfect I just had to try them. I steamed them at home and they are just as good as in a restaurant. Turns out Goldbelly sells Nom Wah dumplings 2 for $109!!!! So one for $27 is a bargain! You are paying for shipping at Goldbelly even if it's free shipping. What a difference in price when you can buy the dumplings at Fairway! Also, the nice guy at the seafood counter had some nice fresh live lobster for $16.99 a pound, which wasn't that bad for the middle of the winter. I bought one at it was sweeeeet! read more

Fairway on East 86th Street has really got my business today. My Coach Gary just told told me not to forget to get my 6% Seniors Discount. Geez he thought I knew. All these years I would have planned my shopping for Tuesday or Wednesday when they give Senior Discount. Yes you read correctly, two days a week for Seniors Discount! No one else gives even one! Today I came across a Teddie's Peanut Butter sale. I'm loving my Teddie's Peanut Butter on toast. Plus the Oat Bran I buy was on sale. It appears Fairway has the best price for Nabisco Saltines too. I just bought one box for now because I'm getting fond of the Whole Wheat Nabisco Saltines. I've only seen them at Key Food. I came in contact with so many employees today and they were all smiles and helpful. If I needed help with the shopping cart, which I did, the employee at the door helped me find the best cart to carry my own shopping cart and how to secure my cart. Today was an exceptionally good customer service and also savings experience for my favorite food. Any little savings helps. I'm recommending Fairway 86th Street! read more

Solid market. Not what is was before the corporate takeover, but the best alternative in the area.

From herein out, I expect to divide time between Philadelphia and Manhattan. Assuming groceries would be much more expensive in NY than PA, I stocked up and schlepped bags of stuff on Amtrak to Manhattan. To my surprise -- and delight -- many things were comparably priced. Eggs (yeah, i brought those too) were even cheaper in Fairway. If you're a newbie, be sure to sign up for their frequent shopper program. I like this market! Two liter bottles of Dr Brown's soda, $3.00! A variety of produce, delicious looking baked goods, an assortment of prepared food which i likely won't buy ... but it looks good. The store is on two levels, both packed with groceries -- even sausage from Schaller and Weber, a local and old-time German deli. As a reminder that I'm back in NY, I overhear a customer scream at a store employee for no discernable reason. The employee responded 'you don't have to yell!' to which the customer said 'f&$@ you!" 'F&$@ you too!' the employee returned. Ah, it's good to be home. read more

I am writing this new review because I purchased an organic granola cereal for my kids, called "Organic Golden Temple Supper Nutty Granola." It was bulk, I bought a pound, took it home and found it had no nuts at all. I went back, spoke to a member of staff near the where it is sold and was told "that's the way it comes." Really? (See the pictures: (1) cereal I brought home -actually, second and third pic; (2) returned and looked at the labels on the bulk transfer containers. Altogether I found just a few slivered nuts in this mix. You can see for yourself. I feel cheated on this misrepresentation. If this is labeled "super nutty granola" can I even count on it being organic? I have been going to Fairway since it was a single store on the west side, largely owned by the Glickmans, and before it was sold to Sterling Investment and finally to Wakefern -which owns Shoprite. That history is important because, although some of what was 'special' remains that Fairways had as a store, much has changed. This review attempts to be balanced, and I'd be interested in others' perspectives on it. That said, other food is fresh and especially food items with the 'Fairways' brand on them tend to be better priced than even regular supermarkets like Gristedes or Dagostino's (which, in fact, I have just learned is now owned by Gristedes -despite "Family owned since 1932" propaganda). What distinguishes them, however, is specialty, variety and quality. In some stores, but not all, they have real butchers who cut to order. Still, getting hold of one is difficult if you work (morning until, about, 5pm). The UES store is also very convenient -fast lines, open late, etc. The downside to someone like me, aside from cheap granola, is that prices are not nearly as good as they once were, compared to other supermarkets, and even other higher tier or 'gourmet' markets (depending on the items). It could very well be that the other markets have lowered their prices to compete and that the overall markup on foods is lower than before; in part this may be due to Fairways -but it means that Fairways no longer has a price lock on bargains. Even the quality of produce and cost are often no better than Agata & Valentina -please compare and check the prices for yourself. So the advantage of Fairway may now be limited to 'one-stop shopping.' I still travel west. But now it is only for Zabars, which remains a special NY institution. read more

When Fairway closed and declared bankruptcy several years ago, this store location was bought by Wakefern (the owners of Shoprite) but they kept the Fairway branding. Much remains the same such as the layout and specialty departments in pre-bankruptcy Fairway. They still have a fresh coffee department and baked goods. The good news is that for a Manhattan supermarket the prices are reasonable. Good selection of all the basics. Vegetables and fruit are freshly stocked. This is one of the few supermarkets that carries prime meat. Mostly choice, but a few of the meats are prime cut. Fish department has a good variety. The self checkout line even when busy moves rapidly, you may have a five - ten minute wait during busy after work hours or on weekends. Overall one of the better supermarkets if you shop for yourself in NYC. read more

I couldn't find almond flour. I asked an "associate." She said, "It's in front of you." I still couldn't find it, so I asked if she'd help. Mind you, she was standing directly behind me. It wouldn't have challenged her to turn around and show me. Instead, she snapped at me that it was there. Seriously, this woman was purposely nasty to me for no reason. It can be very difficult to find things here. Like mayonnaise. Employees are not helpful. Two sent me to entirely the wrong place. A third finally directed me to the right area, on the lower floor. The to-go food selection is pretty good. I was seriously tempted by a pre-packaged dinner of salmon, risotto, and asparagus for $12.99, but wasn't sure that my mother would eat risotto. So ended up putting them back. Got crab cakes instead. They were good, perhaps a bit too much breading. There isn't an overall impression of cleanliness. It's not so much that there's actual filth. It's just really crowded and the seething mass of humanity included a couple of smelly people. And aisles are cramped. Prices are probably par for the course for the UES. A few staples (peanut butter, fruit spread, grapefruit juice, crab cakes, mayonnaise, deli turkey and cheese, assorted melon, and a small bottle of lemon juice) came to $87. Ugh. Produce section is generally good. Some fruit was overripe. I still prefer Trader Joe's, but will have to go crosstown or uptown or downtown for my fix now. read more

This location is always packed for a reason. I really like the service at the meat and seafood counter, all workers there are great! Also you will get good quality items at decent prices. This location always have everything on stock, so it is reliable which I find amazing because most big supermarkets for some reason always have their shelves half empty. It's also a great location for buying Hispanic ingredients and brands they have a very wide variety of products from fresh, frozen or basic ingredients, sauces, etc. ranging from Argentina to Mexico and everything in between. I was able to find some items I needed and that was a first because specially on the UES where Hispanic food is very hard to find. read more

Really well stocked items and super sweet staff! They are open quite late into the night I think 11PM. I was able to find the Evergreen waffles and Vital Farms XL eggs I needed, and they have a really decent bottled protein shake here for $2! The layout is a bit confusing and maze like downstairs, so definitely ask someone for help if you are in a rush. I wandered a bit since I like to and was not in a rush. :) There isn't an escalator but there are stairs and an elevator! read more

The fifth star of this review is mostly for Maria who was at the register this morning. Firstly I was confused about the bag situation and she kindly went and got me one without me even having to ask. Then I lost a pair of earrings under the self checkout and could not reach it for the life of me! She went above and beyond and moved the whole point of sale for me while very kindly guiding the other customers to other registers. What could have been a nightmare for me ended up being an easy experience that reinvigorated my belief in the kindness of others. As for the food, fair prices on everything except maybe the imported goods (but that's to be expected on the upper east side, gotta head to queens for the deals) and good produce! I love Fairway. Their location in Kips Bay is great. Brooklyn is awesome. THIS LOCATION is absolutely TERRIBLE. The service lacks a lot. But on a recent visit, we were at the deli, which was not busy at all. I ordered a pound of turkey. Great. Then the kid helping me just walked away. I stood there for 10 minutes while he joked and gabbed with a coworker, right there. And the manager guy was fixing a display three feet away and doing nothing. So finally I asked for a pound of Swiss cheese. The kid was like "you should have just said something," as if I erred. But he went to give me the first Swiss he put his hands on and I said I don't like that kind can I get a different one please. And the manager chimed in, "that's all we have right now," as the kid literally was reaching for another, which was clearly visible to me and my husband, along with several other brands. WTF?!! So we got stuck with horrible tasting cheese that we threw out. But that's just indicative of most employees there. It's not a pleasant store to shop in at all. My experience shopping in this fairway market was very positive. I just was in the neighborhood so I dropped by to see if there was any nice produce etc. Well I was truly happy with the selection I purchase grapes, blueberries, green apples, Romanian lettuce, Cucumbers, cherry tomatoes which were all very fresh which was great for our family dinner that evening. The cheese section was lovely as well as I picked up some domestic hard cheeses. The market was clean and products/items were easy to find marked in the appropriate sections. This has been my go to store over the last year for their fantastic and fresh seafood selection. Each week for months, a walk to Fairway for seafood was a highlight of my week. The "Cooking" review I wrote is all seafood I bought from Fairway, including: - Cherry stone clams. I was thrilled to find these giant clams offered, as this is a favorite from the time I was in college, and is not often I found them offered at restaurants. - Mussels. Massive bag of mussels for a reasonable price. - Lobster tails. Large and small, packaged neatly and ready to cook. - Stuffed clams. These giant clams sold at the seafood counter are beautifully presented and delicious! - Squid. Easy to cook and very good! - Octopus. I am still working on cooking this favorite of mine to my satisfaction. - Fresh shrimp. Jumbo and a few different kinds. - Crabmeat. Packaged and ready for toppings on salads. Delicious. I tried ordering from another store and was dissatisfied, will only get this item from Fairway now. - Tuna and salmon. I only bought these once but they were fresh, very good. - Scallops. Jumbo and regular sized; I love the jumbo scallops. Having Fairway to go to for seafood (and other items) over the past year, and during a time when we could not go to restaurants for seafood- was great. Super convenient as it's right in my neighborhood but expensive at the same time. It's a one stop shop for all your grocery needs however it's expensive at the same time specially for organic fruits, variety of cheese and home supplies. They have now started self checkout which seems to be a good option in today's contactless world. I think fairway made a come back due to Covid. Personally I keep flipping between fairway and Whole Foods as buying each and every item from here can get very heavy on the pocket. read more

I scanned the mixed reviews and I guess this is an excellent example of the limitations of Yelp reviews (or any internet reviews for that matter), each of us uses different standards. I am judging Fairway against other specialty grocery stores, and I do not live in NYC. I am not dismissing the complaints of nastiness, I am sure they are accurate. But there are not an endless supply of specialty grocery stores. And in Philadelphia we have only one (DiBrunos) and I am not distrespecting DiBrunos if I say, some choice would be nice. I went to the prepared food section with my mother. The salesman I dealt with was gruff and pouty. There were no customers and he insisted I take a number, for example. It was funny. I asked him questions about the smoked salmon and he didn't want to tell me anything about the various types. He gruffly said "[such and such] is the most popular", that's all he would tell me. I asked for a half pound. Then he went to work. I am a physician and I shit you not, I have seen surgeons who are less careful with a knife than this guy was with his knife and the salmon. Over and over he meticulously sliced pristine paper thin slices of smoked salmon, fussily cutting away anything that didn't look perfect at the edges. He was similarly gruff after when I asked for other things, flank steak, eggplant rolls. This was material for a dinner with my mother. Everything was delicious. Not ok. Delicious. We were out in a flash. I have been there when its crowded: big mistake. Don't bother if it's crowded. I can't help you I don't know what the pattern is. But there is no Gd when Fairway is crowded, that's how bad it gets. But absent crowds it is a delight, and a treasure that only people overwhelmed by choice, could give less than five stars. read more

The food is so fresh from the bakery to the fish the bread is like butter with an a at the end lol the staff are very kind and what a fantastic manager. The cashier was so lovely and everybody was trying to be accommodating for people with disabilities, wheelchairs, etc. thank you to the staff. What a wonderful grocery store! Literally anything you can think of is here. From fresh produce to daily skin essentials to wine/beer. Some items are a little pricey but if you have the customer care, you can accrue points and get specific discounts. I would absolutely love to havethis closer to me! I shop here every so often. To be honest I usually go to whole foods and if I can find what I want end up coming here to see if they have what I want. They have usually a better stocked organic vegetable section but prices can be higher depending on what you want. Organic cilantro at whole foods is 1.49 but here it's 2 for 2.50. During this pandemic they are not limiting the number of people in the store. They do have tape lines on the floor at checkout and plexiglass. Some cashiers wear masks others don't. I will not go to the one without a mask. I would say you are at far greater risk for contracting something here than at other stores that enforce facial coverings and social distancing. Fairway clearly has long way to go to protect its staff workers, customers,community and health care workers to slow the spread of disease. At many stores , no mask means no entry. Fairway should step up to the plate and do its part. read more

Also Compared to the other fairway on the west side in Harlem it just does not seem as fresh here and the prices are higher than other grocery stores in the area with less items on sale. I saw and warn her and still, it was on my bill I went back and change. I suspected that and check my stuff and bill again there were missing items, she charged 5.89 for nothing. I have frequented Fairways in various places, all seem the same. The availability and turnover of items is good. Help is 50/50: butchers and fishmongers always very helpful; produce so-so; checkout is hostile at times; customer service is very poor. I reduced stars because the price in the shelf is less than you get charged. I don't understand this. I bought 10 items and was overcharged for 3 of them. Caused me to have to go from the hostile checkout to the poor customer service. No apology for the discrepancies or wasting my time. I was excited to see a Fairway while I was on my walk home the other day as I find the Whole Foods near me a bit too big and daunting (and they don't carry some of my preferred brands). This particular Fairway has a decent selection which I was pleased about. Apparently there are some deals on sushi on Wednesdays because I picked up a shrimp tempura roll for $5, although I didn't think it was very good (even for grocery-store sushi). Produce prices were insane ($8/lb for asparagus compared to the $5/lb I've been paying at Whole Foods). Prices for some other things (beer, cheese, snacks) were more reasonable, though. Line was relatively short and moved quickly. Can't say I'll become a regular shopper at this Fairway, but I could see myself stopping by again on my way home for a quick grocery trip. read more

Zero stars... Please excuse my rant, but this place is like a bad person in your life, that you give a thousand chances to, and they just treat you worse every time you forgive them. Alas, this place has only declined.. They instituted mobile checkout, which I thought was terrific for customers. But now they have periodic "bag checks" which means that if you use mobile checkout you have to twiddle your thumbs waiting for a manager who then treats you like a criminal if there's a bug in the mobile checkout (in my case I think it was that the wifi kept dropping, so the mobile checkout did not register my product scan). Besides, they have plenty of produce that won't even scan, because it's not in their mobile database. They are totally incompetent. No idea how to run a store or treat customers. Almost no one on staff who has the slightest idea how mobile checkout works. Staff pretends not to know or hear any questions. And none of them give a damn. The last time I used "mobile checkout" I ended up having to checkout at the register. For one item. So what is the point of their fancy mobile checkout? So in addition to inedible prepared food, aging produce, chaotic aisles where it's impossible to find stuff, unhelpful staff, crowded aisles, inventory that is disconnected from what people want to buy (if you can even find what you're looking for), rude staff and customers, and no customer service, they have now declared war on their customers. If I ever go to Fairway again I won't use their mobile checkout. It's faster to wait on their interminable lines. In fact, if they making shopping in their lousy store so difficult, why even bother? So you might save a few dollars here and there (maybe?) It's absolutely not worth it. read more
