We arrived in a Sunday and were told the restaurant closes at 8:15p. The town nearby all closed down, so this should be advertised immediately. Tourist have elderly folks and children and nowhere is it announced. There is no bell hop services, so if you bring luggage, be prepared to lug it yourself. For a hostel, five stars for a hotel 2 at most. There is no air conditioning. On a hot night, good luck. First time in Scotland and we do a great deal of touring around the world. We also work hard for our vacation money as most here I am sure do. Not recommending this place. Staying just tonight and never coming back. Sorry!

The only thing I could say was a little disappointing was no AC so we kept the windows opened as it was cool enough and they advertised a small fridge but they had none. I don't know anyone who's done this and it was across one of the thinnest links to the other side, but I did it. I paddled my surfboard across Loch Ness. Was I scared of "Nessie", the prehistoric monster that supposedly lurks beneath these cold, dark waters? Naw, I even splashed around a bit to see if I got her attention. Nothing. As I figured. My bf thought I was crazy for doing it but I thought he was the crazy one for not. (We're no longer together) I peeled out of my suit, fingers frozen to the bone from the cold, ate a couple more of the fudges and headed back to the hotel to dine and swap Nessie tales with the visitors and proprietors. I didn't have to pay for one drink all night long. But I think I got sick from the venison. The "Drum" hotel was warm, close to the loch, had a small cafe and offered pack lunches to take for walks along the shore. And everybody wanted to hear my Nessie story. I would've made headlines world-wide had I been eaten. "Aye, Robin Z, a brave American lass, eaten by Nessie, how tragic. So what's for dinner? Not venison again, I hope." The lore continues.

On our second day, we saw walkers clad only in t shirts, so you can tell how successful we were. We did better with the choice of hotel. The Maple Court is set just yards from the fast flowing River Ness (the fastest flowing river, apparently), and there are great walks along the banks both into the city centre and over the rather juddering footbridge to the other bank. Arriving tired and glassy eyed off the rather rocky sleeper, we were able to check in our baggage and go off in search of breakfast. Our room was large, bright and airy, and confortably decorated in soft pastels and pine. Trendy it wasn't but the room was very welcoming, and we found the hotel a great base to go exploring. There is a small bar in the grounds. Breakfasts in the hotel were large and filling, with options of cooked breakfasts, kippers and, of course, porridge. We had dinner at the hotel one evening, where we were one of only two tables. The food was excellent, and the price modest. We booked our stay on a preferential rate through the Scottish Tourist board, and got three nights for the price of two. Our stay here was a real bargain, and we will certainly go back if we are in Inverness again.

Be sure to get there early for your tour, the boat left at the advertised time, which is great for travel planning, we were just late! We were pretty bummed, but we took a beat and had some coffee in their café, which was a very nice relaxing experience on its own. We each had an Americano and they were very good. Once we gathered our thoughts we checked back in with the cruise staff, and they were able to bump our reservation to the next cruise time!!! We were thrilled because we were specifically looking forward to the "contemplation cruise", and the cold clean air of Lochness. The cruise itself was marvelous. Very smooth, only a few moments of choppy water. The guide was funny, educational and relaxing. He had some hilarious silly jokes which I loved. Being on the water refreshed our spirits completely!! The boat had a bar with coffee, snacks and alcohol. While we didn't partake in anything on the boat, I imagine if we had it would have been pretty satisfying. We brought snacks of our own on board. There were 3 restrooms on board which were clean and maintained. Be sure to bring some layers, it was pretty chilly, but then the sun would peek out and sitting in the sun it would warm up all of a sudden. Seating was available above deck and in the cabin. This was one of my favorite activities of the trip. I recommend for travelers of all ages and abilities.
