Be advised, bargain hunters and 99¢ store aficionados: Family Dollar, while certainly a purveyor of discounts and seconds, has most items priced at more than a dollar. I understand that for some, this will result in an apoplectic display of unadulterated, authentic frontier jibberish... but if you can get past this point, there are some cheapish finds here if you're willing to lower your standards to a level of basic utility and accept the nearly disposable nature of items found here (note, there's a Dollar General around the corner, but if you don't like Family Dollar's pricing, you're gonna have a bad time there, too.)
Staying with the kids at a nearby hotel, we wandered in for cheap hotel toys, batteries, and some warm hats and gloves. All of these items were found quickly in the somewhat cluttered but small store. Several "end displays" of assorted bins of crapulent knock-off toys block the entrance/exit, and likely excite the Fire Marshal on his bi-annual visits.
Cheap ski caps for a dollar and mittens/gloves for $3 were ours for the taking. Five year old daughter selected some terrible Shopkins toy, and sons settled on walkie talkies with a 6 ft. range and lots of "squelch" (sorry Millenial readers, you grew up in a world of telecommunications in which squelch was probably irrelevant...)
Anyway, I enjoy pawing through discount store stock like some kind of starving raccoon... sometimes, you just might find the proverbial lobster tail that got dropped on the floor. Don't hate on Family Dollar; just think of them as Big Lots' smaller second cousin with a superfluous third nipple and maybe missing a toe on her left foot. read more
