Although this shop is situated in the seedier section of the community, I love it because since it has opened (2013, I think), it managed to maintain its product and service standards.
Their standard offerings -- sushi, rice rolls, noodles, cake slices, specialty sandwiches and pastries, ice cream, plus rice meals -- hold up well to the competition in terms of availability. Where else can you go at 2am when you're stone-faced drunk and in dire need of emergency sushi?
Granted, their sushi and rice rolls may not be as good as what you'd find in premier Japanese restaurants, but they're decent enough for the price and availability. The rest of their pastries (donuts, muffins, quiche, cake) are relatively experimental with flavor, like their green tea cream roll, green tea bun, Hokkaido bread, and muffins crowned with sugar-glazed mini donuts.
For the life of me I don't know why one would stuff pastry with another pastry, but it looks good, and if that's your thing, enjoy it while it's on the menu. #NotJudgingYou #SugarBombsofManila
There's also their soft-serve ice cream. All that sinfully indulgent creaminess which you can get for only PhP25, for as much as you can pack into a sugar cone. I once tried getting the equivalent of a pint of green tea-vanilla ice cream, and out of delicadeza, forced myself to finish it in one sitting. A pint on my lips, 5lbs on my hips.
For caffeine junkies, they serve two brands of brewed coffee (Nescafe and another unfamiliar brand), but their 3-in-1 brand selection is also surprising: UCC, Optimo, Kopi Luwak -- not your typical instant jitters in a cup.
As for their convenience items, expect to see a more diverse range of products like Japanese and Korean liquor, Japanese candies and snacks, and Japanese, Korean, and Thai instant noodles combined with local and American brands.
So far, their service has been consistently courteous and helpful. I wouldn't have to point this out because courtesy is a must, but I have encountered lukewarm service from other more popular convenience stores, so this is a plus.
The place is generally well-maintained and inviting to hang out in for a quick snack or cuppa joe. Even their music on Family Mart Radio is contemporary easy listening by young unfamiliar artists, well-chosen pop tracks that don't fill your head with hours of Air Supply on a loop. Just try to avoid the rush hour, where groups of noisy students tend to hog the seats for over an hour after buying one piddling ice cream cone.
TL;DR: Their prices may be a little steeper than those in other stores, but considering what you can get here, it's not a bad deal at all. read more
