Though not locals, we come to Constantine Bay, Cornwall annually and tout its virtues and beauty to all. We have eaten here, as our local, many times, and enjoy the history and indeed the RStein international story. Tonight was an eye-opener that this legacy is not being maintained. However, there is a good range of local beers as well as more widely available brands. Service from bar staff was good, but the back up from the waiting staff was poor. We also had to wait 40 mins after main course and chase up twice before our desert arrived (which we ordered at the same time as the main). At one point I was told by one waitress that the kitchen "we're quite grumpy tonight" and did I want to cancel and get a refund! Must do better!

The Smugglers Den Inn is a 16th century thatched inn with family, beer garden, childrens play area and ample parking. The beer garden is where we like to crash and relax. While the kids play on the apparatus we chill with a ool drink in the sun and order from the menu full of lovely food and they always have plenty of specials on the board all made using the freshest local ingredients. It is situated in a little village called Trebellan, near Cubert, less than than 15 minutes from Newquay. You approach down a steep, high sided road which is typically Cornish and the pub is right before you and very welcoming. They have regular live entertainment and also have an annual Real Ale and Pie Festival which is is it's 9th year. It's definitely worth pulling off the beaten track and seeking it out for a refreshing treat.

There's not even much of the rock quarry visible that gave the place its name. So IF you're heading to Rock, why not stop at this rather nice restaurant which offers brilliant views of the bay. The menu is split into three time schedules, breakfast, lunch (12 to 6 p.m.) and dinner (after 6). The range is a bit higher key than the usual pub grub, and the chicken breast (topped with bacon and cheese) I opted for was rather nice indeed. The beer range is limited, especially on the hand-pumps - similar to the Rock Road Bar & Grill which inhabits the same building - and they may indeed be one item. Korev and some international lagers are available though. The view is indeed splendid and the staff were really nice when I visited. The outside seating can be covered, but it was not on this rather warm and sunny June day. Since there are very few alternatives here, I'd give The Rock Inn thumbs up. There is truly no real reason to go to Rock in the first place, but this one might be it.

Set back from the road, the Malsters Arms seems to be the hub of the village with a mixture of traditional and contemporary decor. It has a warm and relaxing feel as soon you enter, empahasised by the friendly and helpful staff. The entrance is straight into the traditional bar area where you can sit and have a quiet drink. The more modern restaurant areas, branch off from this area. On our first visit we had tiger prawn linguini and stuffed mushrooms, all the food was exquisitely presented and full of flavour. The desserts were again packed with flavour, and presented wonderfully on stylish black plates. Not cheap at £14-£17 for a main, and over £5 for a dessert, but worth it for the food and the general ambience of the Malsters. As we were only on holiday for a week, we just had to go back for a second visit. Bathed in fading summer light and having chosen a simply sublime sea bass and salmon dish, the restaurant at the Maltsters is one of the finest dining experiences I've ever had! I would recommend it to anyone, I just wish we lived nearer! If you are going to go though, book, or otherwise you will be disappointed.
