Room very well designed - Bathroom was very good, with underfloor heating - Everything had been given attention to detail. 4. Very helpful and friendly owners. 5. Handy car park available at the back of the hotel Negatives ------ 1. There were two large tables in the dining area, so when busy, you would have to share with other guests - Not a problem for some people, but it would have been nice to have your own table and space. 2. I had a few problems with internet access, but was able to use it successfully from the lounge area - so it wasn't really a problem. - and will probably have been sorted out by now. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone, and will definitely be staying there again when we next visit Kendal.

The rooms are clean with everything you could want, need or ask for, except a telly. The beds are comfortable, though the thermostat on the room means they're a bit warm for my liking and on both occasions I've stayed on the ground floor so leaving the window open wasn't an option. There's good sized baths and the bathrooms are, overall, top notch. I do like the kelp based soap and moisturiser that's provided. Foodwise, I've detected a slip in the quality between now and two years ago. It's still very good service and excellent quality produce, preparation and cooking but there's definitely been a slip. Though perhaps they can be forgiven, since they were serving 160 of us pretty much simultaneously! The rest of the hotel is really nice. You can tell it's pretty old and the book detailing the history of the hotel will attest to that too! The book is particularly worth a look if you're a Wordsworth fan! The view from the front is amazing, right out over the marina of Lake Windermere, it definitely wakes you up in the morning! The staff are wonderful during the conference preparation and are great at getting a room from 'presentation mode' to 'ceilidh mode' in a short time. They also put up with a lot scientists who somebody gave free wine to, so I can tell you they're patient and well mannered too!

This old manor house sits high over Lake Windermere with gorgeous views, beautiful gardens and warm inviting public spaces. Our room was very large and extremely comfortable. The bath room was remodeled to the latest style. If I wanted to pick at something, it would be the too small and tight shower (although with great shower head, adjustable height, good water flow and a hand held option that every hotel should have. Our room was a bit too hot at night as all the rooms are heated at night together with no individual thermostats. There was a fan in the room and we were able to open the windows and cool the room down. The food is another story (and a better one!). It is simply outstanding across the board. The chef, his kitchen staff and the servers are very talented and professional. The breakfast pastries, fruits, cereals and fresh squeezed juices were all terrific. The full English breakfast was the best I've enjoyed anywhere. Our dinners were top shelf. We even had a light snack for dinner after a tiring day and the salads, chips and deserts were as good as the food in the formal dining room! We had an amazing stay and strongly recommend the Linthwaite to anyone visiting the Lake District

Not really knowing the area, looking at the hotel's position on a map did nothing to inform us as to what we might expect. The hotel is the last vestige of what was once a 9-hole golf course with driving range. The course has been sold to local farmers and the driving range still operates under new ownership. Acts as a by-the-week accommodation for contractors at the local shipyard and associated industry. The hotel is attempting to position itself as a wedding and events venue, but is a bit shabby in common areas and could stand a nice freshen-up of carpeting and paint. The restaurant is pretty pricey - typical for hotels - and costs can mount up if you eat there every meal. We thought we had booked with free breakfast only to find out we hadn't, but were fairly happy with the menu offerings. Just wish they offered a daily special or two to keep things interesting because after a few days you get tired of the same few items you may actually wish to eat. The best thing about this hotel is the friendly and helpful staff who really made our stay great... especially Kyle Henderson, one of the managers. He is a real asset to the place and very personable. If he ever leaves I probably would stay elsewhere.

Rooms are spacious - I was in a twin room which had a decent sized bathroom. Shower was over the bath but separate controls - no messing about with the taps which was great. Plenty of wardrobe space, good sized room with chair and tables (plus tea and coffee) and little balcony, accessible from patio doors. Not really used in October, but it would be handy on a summer's night. As part of the wedding, we ate in Room One-o-One, the hotel's upmarket restaurant. The food was excellent, with a crab and lobster starter, guinea fowl main and panacotta pud. All dishes were cooked to perfection and packed full of flavour - surprising for a hotel restaurant as often dishes can be a bit 'meh' and over priced. The service from staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast is in the main dining room - a huge selection of cereals, continential breakfast items and a full English you can help yourself to. I was pleased to find they offered gluten free bread toasted :) I was booked into the Burnside as part of the wedding but I'm currently investigating it for a return visit as I would like to explore Bowness and the Lakes further. I did notice that some people were registered as having KGB deals for £49.50 for a room and breakfast so that would be a great option. There are lovely grounds too - looking out over the Lakes and there is also a leisure centre. Sadly I did not have the chance to try the pool and the jacuzzi but other guests used the facilities so worth taking swimming gear with you. I would return to the Burnside again - lovely hotel in a great location with nice friendly staff making it a great place to spend a few days.

I booked this hotel for my husband's birthday treat. I chose the Lymehurst because of it's 4 star…read morerating and the reviews of the restaurant and welcome. First thing we noticed was how narrow the parking spaces are! With a car parked either side of us we could hardly open the doors and had to squeeze out of the car. Welcome not particularly welcoming. The lady who greeted us did not give her name. She spoke in a peculiar half-whisper and was quite gloomy. We did not feel welcome and were a bit unnerved. We were shown to our room the Kirkhead. This is billed as a superior double and the website describes it as having a settee. I would hate to see a basic double if this is a superior! The bed is a double bed but seemed quite narrow. The room did not have a settee. The room is long and the ceiling high but it is quite a narrow room now they've put up a stud wall and fitted a bathroom. The wardrobe was very small for a couple: we were unable to hang up all our clothes for the weekend and had to fold some tops/trousers. My partner is tall and he noticed dust on all the high surfaces: tops of mirror, tv that made us cheekily run our finges across the top of the door frames and we found heavy dust there. The hairdryer was not working properly: it would only blow air if I kept my thumb pressed hard to a button on the front of it. As a result it was uncomfortable and no good for styling hair. The furnishings could best be described as pleasant there is nothing plush about this room and it certainly wasn't conducive to a romantic getaway. The room was rather hot and stifling. I tried leaving the window open but had to get up and close it at 2am on the first night because of the noise from the terrace directly below our window. The bathroom was cramped. When we had a bath we realised the bath is not just shorter than average, it is also shallower. Also, we could see the stud wall at the bottom corner of the bath where it had not been properly fitted. And the hot tap on the sink is loose. A major flaw is that the floor is NOT non-slip! We had a couple of hairy moments after bath/shower when we both slid on the wet floor. Oh, and the bathroom door sticks after a shower/bath and was pretty hard to wrench open. The soap/shampoo/conditioner provided is a sort of all-in-one that smelled really quite masuline. I'd advise bringing your own. The overall impression is just of a place that had grand aspirations but neither the budget nor the will to live up to them. Food: we did not eat in the restaurant. My partner found the menu limited (4 selections for each course) and not particularly inspired. We did eat in the bar now this is a plus point. The bar is large, brightly lit with several areas to sit and eat/drink. The staff were cheerful and welcoming (which was something of a relief!) and the food/drink arrived quickly. Food portions here are generous and the burger/sandwich were both tasty (one minor quibble; my sandwich came with avocado. This was mashed to a paste and had turned that rather brownish green one gets when avocado is cut and then left). I can definitely reccomend the cocktails and the ice creams! Breakfast: the continental part of the breakfast was excellent: a good range of fruits (fresh, tinned and a mixed berry compote), yogurt, several different cereals, milk, danish pastries & croissants and 4 different fresh fruit juices. Had we just had this, we'd have been very happy indeed. Unfortunately my husband chose instead to have the Full English breakfast. This seemed peculiarly stingy especially given the portions of the food served in the bar the previous evening. He got one sausage (texture: very dense. Not come across that before except in ones that have been cooked from frozen), ONE mushroom, ONE HALF of a tomato. Oh, and I'm pretty sure the HALF potato cake he got was not made in the kitchen there was a distinct impression of shop-bought. Lounge; comfortable, although a little cramped. The hotel brochure says that games are available in the lounge. Unfortunately the night we were there the games were all in the corner of the restaurant and we were told they would be unavaiable until after the restaurant was clear. Now, in the Lakes it rains a LOT and there is quite a necessity for things to do in bad weather. To have all the board games unavailable was just another half-thought out aspect of our stay. To sum up: This is not a hotel. It is a B&B. I don't know how it got 4 stars: I'd have thought 3 was pretty generous, based on the welcome and the room. It (or at least the room we stayed in) was not good for a romantic weekend. We were left feeling deflated and left very early on the morning of our 2nd night. Despite the website saying you can check out any time after 7am we were unable to find anyone for checkout, nobody answered the bell (rung twice) and in the end I left a note and the key on the stand in the entrance hall. We were glad to get away.

My only complaint was that if your room is on the top floor, there is no lift, and you have to carry your luggage up 2 flights of stairs. Were were traveling over a 3-week period, so ours was heavy and bulky, making it difficult to get our things to our rooms. And there was no one to help with this. I would stay here again, but definitely request a room on the first floor.

The tranquil serenity…read moreand surroundings combined with old world charm and hospitality are a hallmark with these two hotels. They work it to uncommon levels not found in most others and that sets them apart uniquely. It is like how specialized in certain areas of hospitality the game reserve/wildlife park resorts/inns/bed and breakfast places are. There are also a variety of treetop hotels around the world that have their own charm as do the beach resorts/bungalows and such at various locations. The one thing that these two Glenburn hotels don't share in common is the English countryside on the one hand and the Himalayan Mountain Range (Mt.Everest) piercing the skies on the other. Fog is common at both, which I always like for one reason or another. Both must visit/experience special destinations, without question. One of my fave Uncles, a really jovial and witty guy was director of the Darjeeling Zoological/wildlife Park, back in the day. He was,among other things known for a project he developed and saw to fruition. Saving the rare Blood Pheasant. He decided Glenburn was ideal for them to propagate, and so it was as well, as it turned out happily. So there is another tidbit to have for over the 'Cuppa' or 'Hocuppa' tea as they call it in some parts of England. Conversation/Chit-Chat and so on, you know. Yes indeed,all that great stuff that's more and more hard to come by these days and when it does, it's all the more special and is stuff that dreams are made of.
