This place has only gotten better, so it deserves an updated review. I work so close to this place that sometimes, its difficult to resist stopping in in the morning! If you come first thing in the morning (7 a.m.), many of the items will not have been made yet and it will be slim pickins. However, if you arrive around 7:45/8 a.m., the shelves will be stocked and it'll be hard to narrow it down to one or two choices. Some of my favorites here are their sweet cream bun (long-ish sweet bread filled with sweet cream and topped with a crunchy layer of sugar), their fish sandwich (this item is new and delish and much tastier than any fast food fish sandwiches), walnut cruffin, the steamed buns, the puff pastries and the chocolate walnut bun. Behind their dessert counter, they have fresh cakes and mochi! I really like their mango mochi, which is filled with fresh cream and mangoes. Many times, I've purchased cakes here for work events or after-work gatherings. My top go-tos are their mango fruit cake and the tiramisu. Such good Chinese bakery items ! I love the egg custard tarts and the steamed buns ! My boyfriend and his family have been getting stuff from here for years and I hadn't realized until I brought some stuff back for him. I thought the custard cups were much better than the steamed bun, however. The bun seemed to have a lot of dough and not as much filling. The one I tried was pork and cabbage. I really liked the flavor of the filling and the bun was fluffy and a little sweet. The custard was creamy and delicious ! We opted for -Scallion & Green Tea Twist -Red Bean Rice Cake -Taro Puff -Dan Tat (egg custard tart) -Hot Creamy Milk Taro Drink Taro Puff has a thin layer packed with lovely Taro filling...very delicious and moist. I really enjoyed the Creamy Milk Taro also...just enough sweetness with soft and fresh boba...very delicate. The Twist was a little dry and lacked the flavor of green tea...almost as if they just brushed it on. Dan Tat was average...a little too eggy. Register was fast and prompt...the staff came across a little rude and short with their interactions with customers, but I can imagine that's just a result of the language barrier. We had already eaten lunch, and had a big dinner planned, but that didn't stop my love and I from taking several items with us to share the next day while we were holed-up during a mighty Nor'easter. The "puffs" are incredibly filling, and only $2, and you can get some great slices of cake for around $2. It depends on what you get, but a lot of the items here are as good or better than what you can get at the non-Chinese bakeries in the area, and it's a half to a third of the price. Not everything is good -- the torte isn't very rich and tastes like a pretty standard slice of cake and not a torte -- but when things are $1.50 to $3.00 you can try a few things to see what you like. read more

Food: This is one of my favorite bakeries in NYC and have been missing it since moving away. When working out of our NYC office, I love that this location is right outside my subway stop. Always get the coffee-milk, with lightly sweet. The curry puff pastry and rice in lotus leaf are my go too. I do also enjoy the sausage bun and cakes, but those two are my faves. Atmosphere: Shop is clean, smaller than compared to their Forrest Hill location, but it's the city. It's literally right outside the west 4th street stop. Right as you enter or exit the steps. Causes quite congestion during the morning rush-hour as getting into the shop is a narrow alcove, but all worth for the goodies you are going to get. Staff: The staff is quick and attentive. Refilling shelves constantly. I've never experienced something out over the past years, same whenever I can visit. Make sure you keep your tongues with your tray. Some people leave them behind or rack them back onto the stand after picking their goodies. Staff quickly catches it and they take them back to clean. Love it. Definitely check out their unique pastries and baked goods! Cash only, $20 bills or smaller last time I was there. After passing by I decided to try this place out in the hope I find some Chinese buns without going to Chinatown. This is a small shop where you use tongs to pick out your items and place them on a tray before going to the checkout counter. As I look at the display cases I see Chinese buns like pork, bean etc. and other items like Mango Mousse, egg custard Bao bun, cheesecakes, cream cakes and cake rolls. The place is similar to Paris Baguette with less products and a notch lower in quality. But they out do Paris Baguette with there selection of Mooncakes in box sets or individualize single pieces. I got a Pork bun, a tiramisu mousse and Lotus seed and egg yolk Mooncake, and Pineapple Mooncake but it turn out to be Bean. so the single pieces have been mixed up or the sign next to them are wrong but they did taste good anyway. I give them three stars because except for the Mooncakes I can't see myself going back or recommending this place to someone. read more

Convently located by the west 4 street subway station, it's a common breakfast stop for me as well as a after work snack. Other than the cakes, buns, and pastries, they also have bubble tea coffee, soy milk, and some bottled drinks. I haven't tried their coffee or coffee yet (my hands are often too full with bags and books that I can't carry a drink without worrying that it'll spill lol) The buns and pastires always taste fresh and my favorites are the hot dog buns, cream filled down the middle buns, egg tarts, spongecake, Japanese cheesecake, and pork buns (in the mini oven in the corner by the window). Also the prepackaged lotus paste buns are delicious. The cake slices encased by the register are pretty good too but due to my commute they often spill and get messy by the time I get home. This location also seems cleaner and brighter than the Chinatown location but both offer the same items at great prices. read more

Exquisite boba. Their boba was cooked to perfection. Slightly sweet, springy, QQ, not too soft and definitely not hard at all. So good. The buns here are good too. Very delicate and buttery buns that wrap their fillings, including char siu, taro, and hot dogs. I don't love their fillings (the taro was a bit grainy and the char siu was not chunky but more shredded. I miss the grittier, chunkier Oakland/SF Chinatown char siu baos, but Fay Da has quickly become a favorite for me here in NYC. read more

Sweet heavens, wow! Amazing bakery! I'm so glad I don't have to run out to Chinatown to buy bread and such. Located right at the foot of the subway entrance. This bakery has to be one of the best bakery around West Village (if they aren't the best!). It's clean and they are well-prepared with fresh ingredients, and organized. Everything is set so perfectly. I had several items to convince me that just about anything you buy will satisfy you. I bought a whole vanilla roll, large almond cookie, sponge cake, mango smoothie with boba, and egg custard tart. Very sweet splurge. The vanilla roll is perfect, soft, sweet, and easy to eat! Almond cookie was not bad, not too crunchy and firm with good almond flavor. Mango smoothie with boba impressed me. Good boba: soft, gummy, warm on the inside, boba flavor was not too sweet. Mango was a bit strange (funny flavor) but I'm getting milk tea next time. Egg custard tart is almost guaranteed to always be delicious, you can tell just by looking at it. Health-conscious? Well, I'd say this is blurring the boundaries between what we call light eating and gastro-enjoyment. The wide selection and low prices are what draw me to this Chinese bakery at least once a week. That and the self-service aspect; most everything you pick out with a tray and tongs. Cakes, tarts, eclairs, mousses, and cookies are behind the counter, refrigerated and also a little pricier (up to $4 for a tart) . I come here after classes at NYU, before or after I go to see a movie next door at the IFC Center in the afternoon, or even on the go before I descend to the West 4th Street subway station. Anyways, they always brown bag it for you. There are a few chairs to sit in and eat and drink, but the ethic seems to be having it to go. Hot food includes steamed buns and puffed pastries, as well as this Lotus Leaf wrap (Warning: do not eat the leaf; it is not part of the edible meal; that is all I have to say on the subject). And the savory buns and pastries are made and flavored with different sorts of awesome things, like pork with ginger or BBQ sauce, or beef with brown curry, for goodness sake! All highly recommended except for their Chinese Sausage bun: just a small dry stick of salami(?) in the middle. The wide variety of other goodies for $1-$2 each are all filling, though many are on the drier side; I recommend a drink with it, like a $1 Yeo's box, be it iced tea or soymilk. I go for the Sweet Potato Puff, the Tuna Fish Bun, the Dried Pork Wrap, the Japanese cheesecake, and anything with the word Lotus in its name. Oh, and Egg Tarts! Next to the wholesale package items, like whole cakes and boxes of cookies, specialty drinks are the most expensive items, $3.50 hot, $4.50 iced. They come with your choice of tapioca pearls, coconut jelly or grass jelly, the latter of which is highly recommended, I hear. All worth trying; I know I have yet to try it all. Worst thing I can think of about this place is the deadpan Chinese staff, whose customer interest seems limited, but they have offered me suggestions of what to pick from time to time. A bit surprised to encounter this rare Asian dessert gem outside Chinatown in West Village outside IFC Center and subway line. Everything is super cheap - a piece of cake is only $1.5 vs. $5 in other fancy-looking French bakeries. The quality is good - of course you can't expect Maison Kayser here - but it is worth the low price. Asian patisserie is usually sweeter and more decorative so expect a lot of sweet buns, meat-floss-dog and egg tarts. Their mochi is really good and has a lot of stuff in it. They also sell milk tea, coffee and fruit smoothie, which are perfect for a nice refreshing stop before hopping on the stuffy subway. They are CASH ONLY so bring some cash. My absolute favorite is their egg custard bad bun. This yellow custard cream is just so delicious and addicting. Imagine a custard filled donut but in a fluffy light steamed bao instead of fried heavy dough. It was perfect and the fruit on the cake was fresh. The service at this location was good--the cashier was fast and polite, and offered to show me the cake before I took it home (which I don't think a lot of people would do, especially when there's a line behind you). Cash only It's rare to find good Asian bakeries outside of Chinatown, so Fay Da is a West Village gem. The prices are affordable and you can't beat the location (literally right outside the West 4th station). Fay Da is a tiny shop and it's most suitable for grab-and-go. There are two chairs inside, but it's awkwardly by the door. The process for choosing items is really simple: grab a tray and pliers and select the baked good you want. Note: they give you the plastic bags when you pay so you have to put the pastries directly on the tray. They also have behind the counter items, such as cakes. They have all the standard pastries you would find at an Asian bakery. I would recommend the chicken puff (in the heated metallic box). The chicken puff is warm, crispy and reminds me a bit of a chicken pot pie. It's delicious. I also really like the sweet topping coconut bun, the cream milk bun, sponge cakes, and basically everything else... The drinks are great too. I always get a coffee milk tea or green milk tea. It goes great with the desserts. The bubble tea here is kind of foamy. It's different than places like Cocos or Kung Fu, but still good. I'm so glad this location of Fay Da exists and that I don't have to make the trek down to Chinatown to enjoy Asian pastries. read more

The sesame ball was crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and the red bean filling was just the right amount of sweetness. One of my friends got a slab of chocolate cake. She was very drunk so I imagine that you could have given her dirt and she would have eaten it at the time. My friend Zaneta ended up getting a steamed pork bun I believe. It was a soft bun filled with a savory filling. They were placed in a rotating window cabin oven thing and I completely missed them.
