Personally, I prefer to visit during the non-arati time to enjoy the feeling of serenity. The temple itself is in the first floor of the building and I don't remember noticing an elevator. It's a very small space, so it gets crowded very quickly during festival days and evening arati.

Another of the most iconic buildings in London, but also one that many tourists don't know about…read more They go to the Westminster Abbey at the other end of Victoria Street and miss this fantastic marvel. Built in the late 1890's and though not consecrated until 1910, the Cathedral is an interesting and "foreign" look. Red brick with white bands is in a Byzantine style that makes it very unusual and it stands out from the boring concrete and glass office structures in the vicinity. The massive 285 tower literally towers over the area and is open to climb for viewing. Inside the Cathedral is also impressive with mosaics all around and under a ceiling that defies description. It's important to note that this is an active and working Cathedral, so show some respect, eh? No flashes! And your donations are appreciated. Interestingly, Mass has been celebrated at this Cathedral by both Pope John Paul II (in 1982) and by Pope Benedict XVI (in 2010). Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1977 (though not for a religious ceremony), the first visit of a reigning monarch to a Catholic Church since the Reformation of the 15th Century.

As in the name, it is located in the City of Westminster in the British capital, London. It can be seen from the "Victoria" end of Victoria Street, fairly close to Victoria Station as well as places to shop, eat and bank on the street and in Cardinal Place. It should of course not be confused with the nearby and similarly named Abbey. 284 feet high including the cross, it is pretty tall and magnificent in structure, although it was partly covered for refurbishment on the date of my recent visit, which was a shame. Inside the church, it was huge, it was beautiful and incredible and it definitely was an amazing sight, one of the things I hated about the Notre Dame was how they seemed more interested in making a profit, charging people to admire the beauty rather than having respect for what it is, a church, this is where Westminster Cathedral differs for the better, after admiring the church for a moment or two, I was approached by a friendly gentleman, I presume to be the priest telling me about their upcoming services for Lent and Easter, with my visit of course coming during April 2019. Since being built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it is a Grade I listed building also. There was a small seating area outside to admire the structure of the building where you can take photos outside, albeit sadly mobile phones and photography are banned inside and there are people who make sure you don't do it (a real shame, I wanted to take photos for myself and for you guys on Yelp!) 4*

It is the Westminster…read moreDiocesan Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament, and was elevated to this dignity by Cardinal Nichols in 2018. The church was just stunningly beautiful. It was built in 1874 as an act of reparation for sins. One of the early parish priests was Fr. Francis Stanfield, who wrote two famous hymns: "Sweet Sacrament Divine" and "O Sacred Heart." As home to the Catholic Association for Performing Arts, Corpus Christi has also become known as the Actors' Church, providing a home for Catholic Actors performing in Covent Garden and around the West End. About two years ago they began the Sodality of the Blessed Sacrament, which encourages devotion to the Mass and the Eucharist. We visited in early January and were so pleased to see the church still decorated for Christmas, including the Nativity Set. The church is usually open every day from around 8:00 am until around 7:00 pm. Don't miss this church. The closest Tube station is Covent Garden.

The Sacred Heart is Wimbledon's Catholic parish church and a prominent landmark on the ridge…read morebetween Wimbledon and Raynes Park. The church was funded by Edith Arendrup, a member of the Courtauld family who, having moved to Wimbledon, persuaded the Jesuits to begin a mass at her home in 1877. Seven years later she paid for the building of the present church, to designs by the architect Fredrick Walters (1849-1931), who also designed Buckfast Abbey. The nave was completed in 1887 and the rest of the building by 1901. A planned tower was replaced by twin turrets flanking the west front. The exterior is of knapped flints with stone dressings. Designed in the decorated Gothic style, the interior resembles an abbey, with an aisled nave, with a tall clerestory, leading to a chancel with an ambulatory and radiating chapels. The dimensions are impressive: the nave is 100ft long and 60ft high. The arcades carry niches with saints connected with the Jesuit Order. The church has numerous late Victorian and 20th century fittings, the best of which are found in the St Ignatius Chapel in the north aisle. The church normally has three daily masses (six on a Sunday, plus a Saturday night vigil mass) and is the centre of a vibrant parish life.

According to the historical records, the architect was a Frederick Arthur Walters (1850-1932) and Edith wanted a place where the Jesuits priests could hold mass for the local community. The Sacred Heart Church took over 20 years to fully complete. Since then, various architects have been bought in to revamp various parts, such as the sanctuary. History aside, it is a beautiful church - both interior and exterior. Very ornate, with an amazing carved font and heavily-decorated altars and nave, it is well worth a visit even if you are not especially religeous. The choir sits at the back of the church, high above the congregation, and they often hold concerts to raise much-needed funds for the church. The choir are amazing, real spine-tingling and heart-soaring stuff. The Church runs many different activities and has a weekly newsletter. It has a thriving congregation and services are always busy. The church has a very warm, welcoming presence and its a lovely place to just sit and think.

We attended Sunday's Choral Mattins at St. Paul's Cathedral. What an amazing Cathedral to visit,…read morebut I think most attendees were tourists (like me). We arrived early and were allowed to sit with the choir up front. What a great honor to sit with a great vantage point of the service. The choir is composed of children and adults, men and women and the voices are extraordinary. The service was beautiful and I couldn't help but think about the people who had attended over the past 300 years. The Cathedral was designed by the great Christopher Wren and is gorgeous inside with massive arched ceilings and ornate marble archways and statues. The choir seats are a dark aged wood with beautiful carving. Photography was not allowed inside so my only photos are of the outside. Tours during no the week are available and going up into the dome is supposed to be an extraordinary experience where whispers can be heard far away. After the service, the bells rang outside in an amazing display.

Because the building does not open until 10am, the front doors are closed and guests are expected to queue up. Surprisingly, there are no signs to tell you where to queue up, so people are waiting in front of the doors until they open. Upon entering, my bag is inspected and you can pick up an audio tour device which has not only information about the cathedral, but has reflection and prayer passages where you can take a seat (there are plenty) and just be. At intervals, the pastor will ask everyone in the building to be silent as he prays for our world. After the prayer and blessing, the pastor makes himself available to anyone. Taking time to pray to God for us and our world was special. While the audio tour was good, talking to the red-sashed volunteers was special in that they had information that was not in the audio tour. For example, the wood carvers would leave a signature on the carving that would be unique like a hidden rocket ship with stars behind some carved vines. If you're a Harry Potter fan like me, you can ask a red-sashed volunteer to show you the Dean's Staircase, a stairway leading to Professor Trelawny's divination class that was used in the film. Unfortunately, you can't walk up the staircase, but you can take some amazing photos. Walking to the Stone Gallery and Golden Gallery requires climbing up 31 flights of stairs, so train well before you arrive. Not only does the Stone Gallery give you a closer look at the paintings on the Dome, but the wall offers a neat little trick, but it takes two people. If you speak into the wall, another person standing on the opposite side (180°) will be able to hear you. On a non-foggy day (good luck with that), you can walk around outside and be able to have stunning views of the city. There's so much to say, but I would rather you experience it for yourself.

When I worked in South Kensington I used to cycle home from work along the Chelsea embankment…read more Every night I would stare across at the giant golden buddha on the opposite bank and wonder what on earth it represented and how it came to be. Since then I have had time to investigate. In 1985, the decision was taken to build a Peace Pagoda here in Battersea Park to join the dozens of other examples dotted around the globe. There is only one monk in residence currently, but apparently you can watch him ringing his bell and chanting every morning - though I haven't visited early enough to witness this yet! Even without him, the Peace Pagoda is a striking addition to Battersea's skyline. If you visit, take a few minutes to walk right around the structure and admire the individually-carved wooden decorations such as dragons and other mythical figures.
