This review is a small adventure…read more.. After arriving in Sunderland later in the evening, right around 8 PM, I decided to do a short stroll then find something to eat. Turns out, there isn't much to do in the city center after closing time on a Friday. I stumbled across this little place, and I stopped in to see what the prices were and what the food was. Turns out, the food was really better than I was expecting. These little takeaway places are a dime a dozen in Newcastle, and they usually are full of greasy comfort food. The place sold greasy comfort food too, but the pepperoni pizza was the best that I've had in the UK. It was definitely a New York style pizza, at heart. The pepperoni, however, were under the cheese, something more typical of Chicago style. Good crust, good sauce, and good cheese--the pizza was a winner. Good pizza at a very very reasonable price! The real adventurous part came when the owner saw me snapping photos of his place... He was concerned, rightfully so, I believe. He told me that I should ask permission before I take pictures... eh, I'll take my pictures. When your store front ends up on Google Street View, (http://bit.ly/aQlPns), you can't really complain about a student snapping a few pictures of your store... The owner, after hearing my story, encouraged me to take more pictures. He was even kind to me after it. I dropped a can of Coke that I just purchased from his store while I was getting out my camera (to appease him). He swapped it for free! So, it was an adventure. This place is just a short walk from the banks of the Wear, which is a very nice area of for walks and viewing public sculptures. If you're in that area of Sunderland, stop on in. If you take some pictures of this place, however, you might want to say something to the shop owner...

It was bustling on a Tuesday lunch time (admittedly it was half-term), so I'm glad we booked in advance! The servers were kind and considerate across the board. I currently have a bunch of weird dietary restrictions and they couldn't have been nicer about it. I was frankly amazed with how considerate they were, checking with the kitchen about everything, and taking it very seriously and not making me feel like a picky idiot. They have a great multi-course lunch deal, but only get this if you're super-hungry as the portions were hilariously massive! The size of these dishes was unreal - huge portions of fish, giant calzones, cavernous plates of pasta - everything looked great and my colleagues were thrilled. Due to my restrictions, I had a more boring meal of a fresh side salad with oil and vinegar (though it was nice and and colorful, with bright greens, juicy tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumber), some cheese bread that they gave me gluten-free (normally it's garlic bread but they left the garlic off for me), and a chicken breast with arrabiata sauce sans onion and garlic (again, they went out of their way for me). The gluten-free pizza bread was actually great - it's really like a small pizza appetizer, not "bread" so much, but the GF base was super crispy and it was covered in melty cheese. It isn't really fair for me to comment on the main - how can you judge a tomato sauce when you've forced them to take out the onions and garlic?? - so all I can say is the portion was huge (the chicken must have been a monster!) and I was so grateful for how they helped me out. Servers are more than happy to wrap everything up if you don't finish it. Desserts are big too and looked great. All my colleagues were patting me on the back for choosing this place. We all recommend it highly and I'm sure we'll be back!
