It was open to the public back in 1847 by King Oscar I, two years before the royal palace was completed. It's been open to the public year round ever since. The park is over 50 acres with the massive palace dominating the center of the park. Since the palace is on a hill it has some nice views of the surrounding area. The rest of the park has walking paths, statues and lots of trees and flowers. Most of the trees were planted back when the park was new and are huge and lovely. The park today is more open than it was in the past and has less trees and green areas, probably because there are far more people using the park today. The park is fascinating not only because of the cool statues, trees, greenery and royal guards, but because you can get right up to the royal palace. A very cool park to walk around, explore and get a glimpse of Norwegian royal history.

I really liked that the park offers plenty of space both for relaxation and for outdoor activities. It is a big tourist attraction so in peak season it can be busy but rarely crowded except at a few popular sculptures like the angry boy. For me the sculptures were OK and felt a bit repetive in style though they are certainly all different. We took the tram here since it is a bit out from central Oslo. The two lions who overlook it were made by two prisoners who were given jail time but as a rehabilitation measure were both directed to carve one each. One turned his life around and became a famous sculptor, the other fell back into crime and was executed. The courtyard itself is where any and all persons can protest or bring something to Parliament for discussion and later in the day after our tour one was setting up as we walked by. All in all, it's a great stop on a tour and one of the more interesting parts of Oslo, but I'm still curious which lion was made by who.

There are two parts of this restaurant, the fancy dinner option (you must make reservations for this portion) and the cafe which is self service. My boyfriend and I did not know you needed reservations for the dine in option so we sat ourselves in the very welcoming cafe dining room. The self serve option can seem confusing initially but they have a lot of grab and go but you can also order hot meals by ringing a bell for the chef. My boyfriend got reindeer with cream sauce and mashed potatoes. I absolutely loved my meatballs, they were sweet and savory, I did not really like the split pea stew though. My boyfriend loved his entire meal and cleared his plate. We also shared their most popular dessert which is the apple pie. It was really good, not too sweet which was perfect for us. There are many paths to follow to get here, but if not beeing a local, the best advice will be to follow Batterivegen (follow road 118 from Råde Missingmyr and park by Slangsvold road 58). The total distance from there is about 3km. On the top you can find a sign with information on the history of this place! Bring your lunch and coffee, and you might even make up a fire! Love to go to this place simply because its not a crowded tourist place - there is plenty of room for you!
