We hoped it would stop raining for a bit...and it did although we did still get soaked during most of our walk! Despite the rain, the waterlogged paths and the grey skies, we still had a pleasant walk. This park used to be an ironstone quarry, so there are pretty trails through the mixed woodland...with large peaks and troughs where people have dug up iron over the centuries. I really want to come back with my nephew and niece...they would love it! Other awesome-ness * We found some fake dinosaurs along one of the trail (!) * There is a railway museum (only open once a week on a Sunday, but apparently it's brilliant for train-loving kids) * There is a fun looking playground for kids, as well as rope bridges, zip lines and cargo nets for big kids * It costs £2.50 to park, but there is no entrance fee. If it is a rainy day, take some wellington boots and a rain coat...you'll love it.

Kirby Hall was built for Sir Humphrey Stafford, a distant family descendant of the Earls of Stafford, but he died before the work was completed, and the property was sold to Sir Christopher Hatton. Financial difficulties eventually caught up with the family successors, resulting from the cost of continual improvements and maintenance, coupled with the vast sums of money lavished on entertaining. Inevitably, Kirby Hall's importance began to decline during the 18th century, and by the middle of the 19th century this imposing and beautiful family home had been deserted, neglected, and subjected to shameful destruction in order to pay off a substantial gambling debt. Thank fully the national trust have tried to preserve this magnificent home and it really is breathtaking.

The guides were very eager to share their knowledge, in fact perhaps a bit too free with the detailed facts, but all of them were very pleasant and helpful. The house is set in some nice grounds and there are formal gardens to explore as well. The cafe serves very good cream teas although they could have offered better quality jam than commercial catering packs. Overall a good experience. One warning though, they do not take credit cards on admission so you need to carry cash.

For many years this pleasant meadowland was used for grazing cattle. However, in 1976 this was opened as The Delapre Golf Complex, comprising an 18-hole course and a 9-hole Pitch and Putt course, a 9-hole par 3 course and a 25-bay driving range. There is also an attractive 'Clubhouse' open to the public. Indeed, the whole philosophy of the Complex is to make golf available to anyone on a 'pay as you play basis. Still more recently, Delapre Park has become home to the Northampton Horse Trials - an increasingly popular sport made up of dressage, show jumping and cross-country. Fittingly the Northampton Pony Club also use Delapre as the base for their own activities. At the southern end of the Delapre estate lie Delapre Woods. These were originally cleared and planted when the gardens were laid out. Some fine oak, sweet chestnut and beech remain from this planting. Further clearances and planting of beech, oak and conifers have produced a mixed wood with many beautiful walks, together with fine views of the Abbey and town centre

And there are toilets nearby. For the adults and bigger teens, there is a big assault course a short walk away. There is so much I havent seen at Stanwick Lakes as Ive been limited by the children but Im very pleased by what I have seen! I think parking is £1-£2 depending on the season.

Nice enough, small sized country park…read more There are some old and interesting pieces of ironwork from it's quarry days, including a rusting large yellow train (can pass for Bill or Ben if you have a young Thomas fan :-) ) There is a nice play area, a pond, a small woods. A stroll round the whole place would take under an hour even at quite a slow pace so it's not absolutely huge. Bordered by countryside and with nice views over fields etc, the Jurassic Way track borders the park too. The cafe could be so much nicer, but is extremely reasonable and friendly enough. Simple, fresh food and cups of tea/cakes etc. Garden furniture and a large window overlooking the outside, but often steamed up. There are rooms next to the cafe that contain a myriad of secondhand books for sale and a model of the old quarry which is interesting. There are craft workshops and whatnot too, but they are privately run.

The play equipment is fantastic; it also has equipment for people in wheel chairs. There is also a huge sandpit, so remember to take your bucket and spade! The park sells them if you forget! The walks around the park are also great and more recently they seem to be making all the paths tarmac so everyone can enjoy them. There are lots of huge trees to explore and climb too! The huge duck pond and stream are full of wildlife; my children adore feeding the ducks, which have to be the best feed ducks about! After all of that there is a cafe, craft shops and museum to wander round too. The downside I have to say is the toilets are in need of an update!
