This was one that I discovered while looking for a place to grab some breakfast (and having a little bit of bad luck with others either only doing coffee, or being shut). I ended up having the Kleiner Frankfurt Frustuck (of the small Frankfurt Breakfast, but since the name of the meal was in German I should use the German, not that I can actually used all the letters that the German uses). It was interesting - a brotwurst, a bagel, and some mustard, which was interesting because to me mustard is not something that I usually put on my breakfast. Still, when in Germany ... Oh, I should also mention that the staff were really nice, and also true to form in Germany cash is king.

Coffee and cake is a bit of a German institution, often associated with the Omas and older folk in…read moregeneral. This place is a reminder of why it is so great. Freshly baked cakes and tarts, done on the premises - usually a selection of at least 10, and done to perfection, with amazing presentation. Don't know who their pastry chef is, but the person deserves an award! Coffees, teas and so on in all varieties, and served perfectly. Friendly staff, and a nice modern edge to the whole thing in terms of decor, and small touches, like free 'parfum' in the bathrooms from a one-off Italian boutique round the corner. A real asset for Mainz, and a must for visitors who want to see what all the fuss around German cakes is about - this place will answer that!

On the ground floor all the tables are aranged at the banks of windows, and you can actually sit on the window sill. Although it can make you feel like being in zoo ( - the name itself is derived from the fact that it once was a pet shop though - ) it doesn't mean that it isn't comfortable inside. Additionally, in the summertime you are able to sit outside. Going upstairs you won't only find aquariums, but also the smoking area with some nice lounge chairs. The restrooms are here as well. The selection of beverages is very good, you'll find more than the usual stuff. I like to go here for lunch. Their menu changes daily and can be found online on their website. German only I'm afraid. The food itself has a high standard, but is surprisingly cheap. They also offer something calles Hurtigessen during lunch hours, where you get the meal of the day and an espresso for 10 Euros. Unless it takes them more than 10 minutes to serve, then it's free of charge. They also offer brunch on Sundays, which is supposed to be very good. I haven't tried it yet, but I definitely will.

The veggies are fresh and tasty, I always get extra hot peppers upon asking and they don't skim with the chili powder to spice things up. The guys behind the counter are really friendly (everyone around their age is a 'brother' or a 'sister' lol) and efficient. Bonus points for making their dürum with freshly baked bread for each order (now if they would also make the flat bread fresh onsite... that'd would get them my 5th star ;)).

The gelato is creamy and delicious, and the service is very fast. There is almost always a line out the door but trust me they can handle it. The servers also speak English which is a plus in my book! Definitely recommend!
