Situated in St Helens, it's a gem of a spot with excellent service, polite and attentive staff, superb fresh and skilled cuisine and comfort for everyone, whether you're a large group, a family or a tiny little couple. Its regularly changing menu keeps life interesting for the workers and customers alike, but why, pray, at this quality, is it so darn cheap? The answer's simple. A lot of what you're being fed comes from learners. Yep, some of the catering students from St Helens College actually conduct their training here. You shouldn't at all let that change your opinion of the place. Each and every kid here will be putting 110% effort into their dishes and have the enthusiasm of youth on their side, and you can certainly taste the pizzazz. It's a new and unusual option as not often does one get to taste the results of a good education but I can highly recommend it, and those that love the restaurant have trusted it for years. First of all, the place is decorated spiffingly. Literally. Spiffingly. It's astonishingly gorgeous, just my kind of quirky decor - a ceiling plastered in newspaper, lovely quaint wooden features, neutral and pastel colours... the whole thing looks like it could have come out of a Hans Christian Anderson story. There are plenty of French favourites on offer like starters of a twice baked cheese soufflé, French onion soup gratin, tartlet with spring vegetables like asparagus, mushrooms and spinach, and more unusual options such as black pudding with chicken roulade, Thai fishcakes, potted shrimp with warm brown toast and hot smoked salmon or tempura veg. I'd call it a more Modern European affair to be honest with its additional pastas and risottos (the spaghetti with salmon and lobster is just heavenly indulgence) and you can have these in small or large portions. The sharing platters are excellent value and mains like lamb shank, duck breast, baked chicken, pork trio, a filo parcel of sun-blushed tomato, goat's cheese and spinach, all of which occupy the fusion cuisine spectrum Le Frog seems to operate within. Oh and there's steaks for the super carnivorous. The side orders aren't just supporting actors here, they're stars. Veg are cooked perfectly al dente, the broccoli hollandaise is delicious, I'd highly recommend the breads with dips and you can get potatoes in many forms - French fries, Cajun fries, garlic and chive mash and even the garlic bread comes in three varieties. All of these are stonkingly good value at under £3 each! Sorry about the dreadful pun, but I'm hopping crazy for Le Frog. See if you agree.

Perhaps the French have over the years had so much red wine with their food that their taste buds have been filed down. My marinated breast of chicken lacked a bit of umph!! The lemon, thymed and garlic chicken was served on roast vegetable cous cous with chive creme fraiche. I'm not sorry at all that my taste buds are absolute whores!!!!! Yes they are , they have been around the block and indulged in every fit cuisine around and had their way ever which way. This meal didn't quite do it for me. I think this is a difficult task considering that Spire is home to some of the best chefs in the North West.

Even the owner gets involved which is always a good sign. There's a wonderful atmosphere and the decor is more than gorgeous, but it's the food that's the star here, especially the crispy squid starter with chilli sauce and pak choi. Mouthwatering deliciousness. There's no particular food 'theme' here other than painfully hip and modern, hence why you'll find gnocchi and mushrooms accompanying turbot on the same menu, but I loved all the combinations. The portions aren't massive as you'd expect from a restaurant like this, but they're certainly sufficient enough. The unhurried ambience really adds to the quality of the place and you feel like you can relax, and the staff seem to genuinely want to listen to you. The desserts are stunning as well. All in all, all boxes ticked - attention to detail here is paramount and that's reflected in the quality.

As a result of the ongoing Covid-19 global pandemic, all restaurants are forced to close for dine-in in the UK with a handful (but growing) number now offering delivery and collection services, this is one of them. They deliver around a three-mile radius, and they didn't mind coming slightly over for me and impressively the food still remained hot despite living a little further away than their regular window. There is a £20 spend limit for delivery which I do understand as the delivery is free and they deliver it themselves, I don't understand why they haven't chosen to partner with UberEATS and Deliveroo however which would make the process so much simpler for them, which is what a majority of restaurants normally do, more so than ever right now given the current situation. It is a reduced menu and while gluten-free isn't available on their website, nor is online ordering, the staff were able to give me information via email or the telephone call which is the only way to order and pay for delivery food (giving card details over the phone). I opted for the chicken kebab, which was served in a pizza box, however, the use of tin-foil and the packaging allowed it to stay hot, it was more of a deconstructed kebab as you can see in the photo and while the chicken was good quality, there wasn't much of it. The fresh vegetables, garlic butter and well-seasoned potatoes (instead of gluten-containing fries) went well with the dish. The chicken risotto, on the other hand, was rather poor, it was made with a tomato base and it really didn't go well with the chicken, perhaps using a more vegetable broth or mushroom would have been a much better combination than tomato. I didn't end up eating it. At £7.50, it was one of the cheaper food items on the menu and I can certainly see why, which is a shame too as on their reduced menu it is the only risotto dish. 3* - One of the only food delivery services of any satisfactory quality, which also can cater for gluten-free in Middleton but they are missing a trick by not partnering with other delivery services which would expand their growth by being able to fulfil more orders and actually help more people realise they're still open. I would have prefered online payment and ordering as giving my card details over the phone wasn't the most comfortable thing I've had to do and being more clear and confident on allergy knowledge would have been good, it did seem a struggle at time to get information regarding particular dishes. An extra star to what I would have normally as give as it's probably the best we've got without going into Manchester city centre in terms of takeaway and delivery services nearby.
