You can see the black scorch marks where the castle burned and Frankenstein fell five stories when the floors collapsed inside the main castle structure. Wild approach through a tiny tunnel. Easy to miss the access point. Looks like you can't get up there but you can! Long healthy hike up hill that will make you feel great when you reach the castle on top. Goats run out to greet you as you walk up the hill. Park at the front of the church. Then start walking. One of the most exciting experiences you will ever have!

When the low river levels along the Main and Rhine Rivers diverted our river cruise to a river cruise, shuttle bus, then another river cruise, we almost skipped Baden-Baden. So glad we took the one hour bus ride from Strasbourg because we loved exploring Baden-Baden. Visited the Kurhaus Casino on our walking tour. Just able to see the lobby and entrance as our casual outfits were not casino approved. The main structure was designed in 1824. The Corinthian columns, grand entrance and the neo-classical interiors are stunning. Since gambling was forbidden in France in the 1830s, many gamblers crossed the border to try their luck at Baden-Baden's gaming tables. Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Gambler was inspired by the Russian author's visit to the Kurhaus casino. Actress Marlene Dietrich declared that this was "the most beautiful casino in the world." A very interesting stop learning about the golden age in Baden-Baden.

You'll park in a lower parking lot adjacent to the gift shop. A shuttle van will bring you almost to the entrance of the castle. From there, it's a bit of a walk. It is barely handicapped accessible though the castle itself is not at all wheelchair friendly and many rooms require transiting a number of stairs. The current castle was built between 1846 and 1867 in a Gothic Revival style and influenced by the Châteaux of the Loire Valley. The exterior is regal, dominating the hill it resides on. Inside, each room is decorated with period furniture and artifacts that were owned by Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia. The vault in the basement contains the Crown of Wilhelm II and a uniform that belonged to King Frederick the Great. No photographs allowed in that room but the rest of the castle, absolutely. It took 3 hours one way to get there by trains and bus. If you have a car it takes an hour. I would say it was worth it, but we were exhausted by the end of the day. I don't know why but Wissembourg is not mentioned in any French travel guide books. Perhaps that is a good thing to keep hordes of tourists away. Wissembourg is a beautiful village worthy of a day trip. Patisseries and restaurants are great. There is a Saturday morning market (small) with a guy who sells soaps from Marsaille for cheap prices compared to store prices. Wissembourg has many sights and is a great village to walk through taking picture after picture. They also have a small Christmas market in December that we really enjoyed! Be sure to pick up some desserts from one of the many great patisseries here. We do that each visit!
