Each is served in this very traditional looking "Stube" with a big fire going in a corner. The fondues come per 2 people and with a gigantic array of sides (from cucumber salad, radishes, lentils, potatoes, fries, bread) to sauces (BBQ, Remoulade (a kind of tartar sauce), cocktail, garlic) salad. If you run out of sides (which I doubt you will) they will bring more. Very nice selection on wines, a VERY attentive and friendly staff. They don't get the full 5 Stars as the fire place had some issues that took a while to get sorted, so we left the place happily fed, slightly toasty but also with a beautiful smokey finish on us and our clothes.

One of the first things I do when the waiter asks what we'd like to drink, I ask for tap water. Otherwise, you are charged 7-8 CHF for every carafe of water instead of 4 CHF charge. When I read the menu (in English) I was excited to find several game dishes like venison, deer, boar and marmot. Having had boar bolognese in Italy many years ago, I ordered boar with handmade noodles ($31.50)and a plate of grilled vegetables ($26). Too much food for one person. While I liked the vegetables, the texture of the squash was strange and tough and the boar wasn't quite as umami as I would have liked. One thing to note is that Europeans like their carbs al dente per American standards. If you're not used to al dente, then stay away from rice and pasta. It's $26 CHF (Swiss Francs for my US readers) per person, and they bring you a boiling vat of cheese and a bucket of bread. The menu is basically a listing of what kind of cheese you want, along with some sharables and desserts. I have a deeply held, long-standing love for cheese. But, this experience tested even my limits. The rule is, you don't drink anything cold with it as it will harden the cheese in your system. Seems like a bit of an urban legend. But, the alternative is brandy and wine, which they bring in great quantities if you ask for it. The brandy shot is included. Ah, the Swiss :) The cheeses were delicious and the bread soft. We dipped and swirled with long forks. My only other Fondue experience was Simply Fondue in Texas, where you actually cook meats in hot oil. This was not that. Cheese only. We also tried some onion soup, which was wonderful and not at all like "French Onion Soup" as we call it in the US. Not even sure if that's really French. For dessert we ordered some fruit and a strawberry sorbet, also outstanding. Our server was happy and fun, walking us through our new experience. We did, and reserved 6:00 PM that Thursday (everything later was taken). We came in on time to our reservation, but found our waitress to be a bit on the unfriendly side. Although 95% of the tables had fondue, she seemed very put out by working, and she was difficult to track down when we wanted to order more wine (this is not by American standards, and we weren't yelling in English. I lived in Germany for two years, speak good German, and am accustomed to European service). The restaurant was very cozy. If you're a table of two you are likely to share your table with another party of two, and it's just warm and homey on the inside. The food was very good- we ordered fondue for two and a salad to share, and found that more than adequate in terms of amount of food. The prices were reasonable, although the wine was more than in other restaurants in the area. I've had fondue before and preferred that experience, but if you find yourself in St. Gallen, craving fondue, then this is a fine choice.
