We were in for lunch and the best seats at the window were bathed in sunshine which was amazing. I'd visited these premises before when it was Velvet Elvis/Criterion and like how they've knocked through the wall to make it a larger space. The decor is great - modern, exposed brick, classy but still with a bit of personality. And they kept the "Keep Partick Weird" wall which is excellent. I got three small dishes for lunch: asparagus with hollandaise (£5.50), three cheese croquettes (£5.50), pan-fried king scallops (£8). The place was really quiet and the food arrived quickly. The asparagus had a lot of hollandaise on it but was lovely, and the scallops were absolute heaven. I didn't love the croquettes though as I thought they were a little bland (especially as they have three kinds of cheese in them). I wasn't drinking but really need to come back for the beers as their list is very long and delicious sounding. This is super cool bar and can't wait to come back for another visit.

I visited here on a recent Subcrawl adventure and it's the only time I would end up here. Not sure what else to say. It had a bouncer on the door in the afternoon, the woman behind the bar randomly gave out some scary looking ham sandwiches. They said it's the best pub that Govan has. So going on they're recommendation we headed down. Well it did have the old men in there sitting as if it's their usual tables learing over fresh new blood to the bar but there was a wee bit screened off up at the back. So when ordering your drinks you ask for the key and then just open up and head on in. It was nice to have that wee bit of privacy. I have to agree though the toilet is ickle but it is kept clean. Upstairs is the private lounge which is a fair size. I've never been up there for drinks but only the once with my company when we did an interview with the landlady about Govan. She's absolutely lovely and very much part of the community. The staff are pleasant and the prices are reasonable so I if you're passing by one day I'd drop in for a wee half. Ooh totally forgot they've got Karaoke Tuesdays. The decor was completely nondescript, but with a big, well-stocked bar. The drinks were moderately priced. The only other big group of drinkers in were a bunch of old English neds. Or chavs, as they're more well known back home. We were the youngest in here by at least 10 years, but the atmosphere was still good and we didn't feel out of place at all, as is sometimes the case in Subcrwal -route bars.

There's a few reasons for that, and while I'm sure there's just something to the atmosphere that's impossible to quantify, these are the things that I think give it at least part of its charm. 1. The whisky. They have a huge selection and they're easily the best place to come for whisky in Finnieston, although most of the bars around here have a few bottles on offer. They staff are very knowledgeable about it, without being snobbish or pushy, and at quieter times are happy to make recommendations and to chat to you about their favourites. 2. It's small. Not in a cramped way but in a cosy way. You can sometimes struggle for a table but it's the kind of place where you feel OK about sharing tables with strangers. The regulars are friendly and are happy for you to pull up a chair 3. When there's music it's fiddles, usually being played by those friendly regulars. I saw an accordion there once but usually it's fiddles being played and being played well - they tend to get involved with the Celtic Connections music festival. 4. It's dog friendly. There's usually one or two dogs running around and the staff are happy to provide a bowl of water for them. So there you have it. Finnieston might be getting awfully fashionable but if that's not your scene it still has one of the least hipster-ish, most traditional whisky pubs in Glasgow and it's a pub that's well worth checking out.

He's an absolute dream and this is the type of intelligent employment one would expect from such a stand-up venue. It's one of the best, if not THE best real ale pubs in the city - it has an ever revolving array of guest ales, as well as a damn fine selection of regular ones. They offer 2 pint takeaway cartons, which may be the single greatest thing in a pub anywhere! The decor is best described as traditional and authentic, and it's always, ALWAYS busy. Here's a wee list: You Won't: - Be able to get served in less than 5 minutes from enterting - Find a table at first glance - Be able to swing a cat On the plus side, You Will: - Have a great pint, expertly pulled or poured. - Be able to ask the staff for advice on each ale on tap - Soak up the amazing atmosphere - Be able to look at the magic wee Glasgow tenement decoration on the wall with proper lights in it and everything - want to come back again and again and again. The Subcrawl on Saturday gave me the opportunity for yet another first ever visit to another…read moreseemingly Glasgow institution that thus far I have avoided. The Three Judges on Dumbarton road is a place that I have always been interested in going to but have never actually made it through the front door. On Saturday over 1/2 way through the crawl I finally entered and was very pleasantly surprised. It is a large place with loads of tables and a long bar. It looks very traditional in terms of style, but I would not call it an "old mans" pub in the normal sense. It is actually is pretty modern in some ways in terms of the various beers it has on offer. I went with one that I have had many times before (Sierra Nevada - bottle) and as always it was excellent. I think in the future I will venture back to try some of the many draught options that they have in stock. Interesting pub, great variety of beers options and well worth a look. 4 stars.

The Rosevale is another typically old-fashioned Partick pub and is a good alternative to the…read moresimilar Hayburn Vaults a few doors down. Particularly if you are a Rangers supporter, as this is another popular bluenose bar on matchdays, jam packed full of fans before and after the games just like the Hayburn. It even used to be owned not so long ago by Gers manager Walter Smith. It is really quite simliar to the Hayburn in a great deal of ways. Same old-fashioned decor, good, quick bar service, good drink prices and televisions with constant live Sky football; not just Scottish but plenty of English Premiership games too. The punters are largely the same, although I have generally found the Rosevale a bit less threatening. It seems larger than the Hayburn although it is probably just about the same size, its just that the Rosevale does not have the centre bar so there is therefore more space near the door, which happily means you're less likely to have to risk spilling your pint trying to move further in. Some of the seats and tables round the back of the pub are a bit old and tacky though - it would definitely help to get this area spruced up a bit. Other than that, I've no real huge complaints about the Rosevale.

The actual pub itself was pretty small, as were the toilets (by this time on the subcrawl, the seal was already well and truly broken). The pub in general had quite an amicable atmosphere. we found a pair of Elton John star shaped glasses on top of a karaoke speaker, which endeared the pub to us greatly.

Yet again I was going to be a young man going into an old man's pubin, where you always get the feeling that you are something of an interloper. Especially so on this occasion, when I went through the doorway and an elderly man having a smoke outside muttered something under his breath at me, much like a big dog guarding its territory. But you should never judge a book by its cover. Stumps does have the usual kind of crowd and traditional look to it, but I was taken by surprise to hear Metallica blasting from the jukebox as soon as I walked in the door. As they are one of my favourite bands I took an instant shine to this place. The jukebox was actually very much the same kind you see in a Scream pub, with a massive choice of songs - very unusual for a pub like this but certainly very welcome. It felt great to be able to buy a pint, put on the Who on the jukebox and then kick back and relax. It felt quite warm inside too, even though it was a bitterly cold day in January. If only all pubs felt as warm inside - you get the feeling a lot of them just don't bother with the heating in order to save money. There was two televisions on in the pub which were showing different channels - one was Sky Sports 1 and the other Sky Sports News. There is also some very interesting paintings on the wall, some of Glasgow-related subjects like the subway and some cricket-related. It is a cricket-themed place as attested to by its name and its proximity to the local cricket club. Despite being one of the smallest local pubs, Stumps is definitely not as run of the mill as I expected it to be. The pints are quite cheap too, so I would definitely recommend it above most of the other pubs in the area.
