I haven't been to the Fillmore Bakeshop since my son graduated from nearby JCHS nearly 4 years ago! Shame on me since it was an almost daily ritual to pick up cappuccinos, fresh pantries, cookies and special treats for morning breakfasts or afternoon snacks. Well, today I dropped my wife off at a medical office on Van Ness and directly headed to the Fillmore Bakeshop for its legendary fare which you can watched being prepared including today! Wow! What a culinary gem in Pacific Heights neighborhood. If I lived here I would definitely be 20 pounds heavier. There a short line but the server was extremely friendly and helpful! The shop is located on Fillmore Street and it is a cozy working bakery with a kaleidoscope of confectionery offerings for whatever your taste from savory to sweet and everything on the spectrum. My first time visiting Fillmore Bakeshop. I like cookies, and they have a good variety to choose from. I bought two Pistachio Chocolate Chip Cookies ($3.75 each) because I had never tried a chocolate chip cookie with pistachios before. I ate the cookie a few days later, and it was still good and not hard as a rock. However, the sweetness was too overwhelming. I'm not sure if the pistachios made the cookie sweeter, but both my friend and I thought it was overly sweet. At $3.75 each, the cookies also felt a little expensive. Next time I visit, I probably won't get the Pistachio Chocolate Chip Cookie, but maybe I'll try something else instead. read more

Stopped by to grab some pastries on my way home and wow their pastries are delicious. Service is awesome the staff is super friendly and helpful. The place is small it only has about three tables to sit down and eat but it's well worth it to take your pastries home with you. read more

Disappointed by the quality I was on a walk in my way to a coffee shop and decided to get this place. I am a sucker for a good croissant. I love love a good croissant. I decided to go in and buy the following: Butter Croissant -- it is any other croissant. It's not flaky, more dread-y. There was only two and it was 12 noon (see pic) so it just showed me either they sell out insanely quick or they just don't stock up. Not good, not special, not worth a detour especially for the price. Raspberry filled heart cookie -- nope. The cookie itself has no flavor. It's cold, it tasted like a packet of cookies you get from the store, jam layer is not thick enough. I'd pass. Pistachio Chocolate cookie -- very on trend but I'll pass. Too sweet and too expensive for the flavor. Chocolate chip cookie -- any other cookie. Highly highly underwhelming and overrated. Not worth a detour. PIE...oh my! I have been a fan of Fillmore Bakeshop since it opened in 2010. The bakery offers the most delicious cakes and pastries but the pies are the stars in my opinion. Their pies keep me coming back for more. The crust is perfectly flaky with just a hint of sweetness in the dough. They remind me of the pies my Aunt Sophie used to make. My favorites are the cherry and blueberry options. The fillings are perfectly balanced and generous. The flavors vary with the seasons so keep an eye out for current offerings. The folks at the counter banter. The music currently playing is 70s jazz. The coffee is refreshingly mid. I don't need a third and a half wave experience, I need something to wash down flakey dough. There are some pretty tame scones and whatnot but also, today, right now, an everything bagel croissant with cream cheese filling. A Reuben croissant. Mushroom quiche. Lemon blueberry buns. Chocolate croissants the size of your head. Sorry, morning buns sold out, but by the time you read this review they've probably baked some more. The chairs are bright yellow. The suggested to on the point of sale device includes a 7% option which is a delightful counterpoint to the one I was accosted with the other day that started at 22%. There is sauerkraut and more pickles in my croissant. I may come back every day between now and when I leave SF. I may never leave. read more

I ran in and out of Fillmore Bakeshop on the way back down to the parking garage. I was looking for Kouign Amann, but they didn't have any. I didn't want to go home empty-handed, so I bought a butter croissant and a chocolate croissant. I warmed them up in the toaster oven when I got home. The butter croissant was very good. I didn't like the extra chocolate on the outside of the chocolate version. I would've preferred just the two bars of chocolate inside. read more

Oh my goodness! Everything in here is as good as it looks and smells. I walked by many times and made the mistake of going in when I was hungry. I bought brownies cookies, slices of cake. The woman who helped me was so kind to segregate the gluten-free From the things that were not gluten-free to mark things so that I could deliver them to the nurses who are caring for my husband and the reviews from the medical staff were all five star. My husband and I are now addicted to the brownies. The only downside is that my dog was disappointed because there was no pup cup, but that's a very small downside. In general, the croissant and other cookies didn't come close. Perhaps it's lack of butter, or layers in their pastry dough. While this is a cute place to stop y if you live in the neighborhood, the quality and execution does t come close to b patisserie or some other bakery/pastry shops in SF. I was excited to see a nice little quaint bake shop on the corner in these busy streets of San Francisco however, I was underwhelmed by the welcome and the fact that they were on their way out the door probably didn't help them much. They obviously closed pretty early and it was about 4 PM when we arrived. The layers of mousse and chocolate exterior were overly sugary as well. No hazelnut in the cake, just on the outside. The decorative chocolate fans on top of the cake were beautiful though. I always try to stop by in the morning walking uphill before hitting my work. That fresh scent of aromatic baked good just smacks you in the face especially on those days with string winds. It's great. Then when you go inside, your eyes will light up because you see everything, but you can only eat so much for thr day. But don't worry, you can have different one everyday and you still will come back for more! Then, once you choose your delicious baked goods, you can then look at their drink menu! This is by far the worst croissant and raisin rolls I ate so far in San Francisco, or maybe in the entire World. It hurts my heart to say that I can find better at Safeway. Croissants are dry, hard, not flaky. It reminds me the ones I used to eat in some Chinese bakeries in poor countries, in Africa, hard like rock. The raisin roll is supposed to be filled with pasty cream. There is barely any. It's seems it has been dipped in some over sweet syrup. That's a no-go. The French will say: "Sacrilège !" read more

I've been coming here for years and it never disappoints! All the cakes and pastries are amazing but I have to specifically mention the PIES! It's not a gathering or Thanksgiving without there pies. The pumpkin, apple and blueberry are my faves which says a lot cause I am very particular about my pies. It's def a must try! Pie crust is truly hard to make. Butter? Shortening? Ice cold dough. Or you could make this crust that tastes just like the heel of stale bread. Flaky? Oh my, no. Rubbery and stodgy. And the filling in the cherry pie was slightly less interesting than Comstock out of the can. Beyond horrible pie. But the food disaster was nothing compared to the price - $42. That is double the price of a pie from Marie Callender and not even close to as tasty. But wait, there's more. As I paid I saw the price came to $52. What? "Oh we charge a $10 deposit for the tin."!!!!!!!! Problem is I live in Palo Alto - at least $30 in gas and parking to return it. Pie tin costs $2.50 on Amazon. If you like absurdity, do business with these jokers. read more

All I got was the almond croissant and look at all that almond paste!! ^^ The croissant had lots of buttery layers and lots of filling! The other pastries and cakes looked so good. I bought two pies, apricot and a cherry, for a family dinner this past weekend. Crust was flaky, buttery with the perfect texture. The fruit filling, while both are out of season, was WONDERFUL! I had this sugar cookie bar, oatmeal cream pie, and this churro square thing. They went 2/3. But those 2 were very good I tell ya. They had a plethora of options that I need to give a real chance too. Right on Fillmore I would assume this place should be earning a lot of foot traffic. I reed every single food writers review for the last 40 years. And I am so surprised that I don't see them classifying the Fillmore Bakeshop among the very best places in the city. You should really see and try the treats they have every single holiday. And it has been so consistently amazing and it is home made from scratch. Check the chocolate sculptures and the bûche de Noël at Christmas. The Viennoiserie makes you feel like if you are in Vienna or Paris. I've walked by this charming corner bakery numerous times, probably thinking the calorific treats would be way out of my nutritional ballpark. Hey, they are, but we all have our moments of weakness, right? Those of you who are satisfied with sugar-free bran muffins should probably get the rolling pin dislodged from your petite derrière because indulgence is a necessity of life.
