The Crown is just the right size to feel cosy without being too crammed, a bit dark on the sunniest day of he year perhaps, but then it's only sensible to take shelter at midday. I always insist on having fish and chips when by the seaside and was almost disappointed to not find this basic pub grup offering here ... the menu is a lot more sophisticated and I had my cod served served on a bed of sweet potato. The fish is caught locally and was beautifully presented and delicious. We had a taste of the chips as a starter along with freshly baked bread (on the premises!) and pickled eggs (I was too squeamish to try those, but apparently they were delicious and definitely not of the turned-blue-on-the-counter type). And we didn's stop there, the pudding menu was just too tempting. I decided to stick to ice cream (bakewell tart flavour!) and soon had food envy as other's plum compote, tarts and cakes arrived - everything tasted just as wonderful as it sounded on the menu and looked on the plate. Lunch at the Crown Inn alone is reason enough not to leave it too long till the next trip.

It is cramped, a little worse for wear, doesn't offer Wifi nor a huge range of beers. That said, it's also the place to get into touch with the locals, especially in the evenings when it can get quite busy (there's not a lot of room anyway). Fairly(!) cheap prices on various lagers, including Staropramen from the Czech Republic.

The "large selection of real ales", as it says on the marquee outside, amounted to four cask ales on tap during my visit. The pub is very cozy and "colorful", with plenty of memorabilia and traditional tools connected to local fishing spread throughout. There's also a small outside seating area where you can relax if the wind is not too strong on the day. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, plenty of local punters about. Good for a pub lunch after a visit to the harbour area or Hastings Contemporary or the Fishermen's Museum, all of which are very close by. Civil prices, too.

The channel coast is an expensive area in terms of restaurant and beer prices, so JDW offers the least expensive option to get a semi-decent meal (I always recommend the currys, now available at discounted prices every day) and cask ales. JDW do a lot for British real ales, no matter that the owner is a complete prick. Real ales are available for UKP 1.99. The décor is very familiar, and there's a patio to the front and a very small "beer garden" to the rear. It's not allowed to smoke in the patio area, but since I was vaping I carried on regardless and nobody cared. ;) Neither one of the most beautiful JDWs, nor one of the fleabags, pretty solid standard. The Death by Carribean Chocolate Cake is what I had and it lived up to it's namesake perfectly. An Imperial Double Milk Stout is what we had some of and we simply loved it! The ABV is a bit high and just over 10 so we knew how to handle this one and get a small pour. Flavor features besides certainly tasting like German Chocolate Cake is Cocoa, spiced and woody. The beer is definitely rich and full bodied so a little bit goes a long ways but it does taste glorious!
