I had a great first experience at Filter coffee today! Upon walking in, I was greeted by the employee at the counter with a smile. When I went to the counter, I took a moment to look at the menu, and told him it was the first time in. He took the time to explain the signature flavors, the various ways to order a drink, and even explained the different notes of the coffee beans they offered. I ended up ordering a vanilla cardamom cappuccino to go. The barista brought the coffee to my table, which I found extremely personable and kind, even though they had multiple orders to make. The coffee had great notes of cardamom and vanilla without being overly sweet, which I really appreciated. Even though I got it to go, the drink stayed warm for quite some time, and was in a compostable container. In addition to this, all UAB students actually get 10% off, just make sure to show your Blazer ID. One thing I noticed for future visits is that the tables are quite small, so it may not be the best place to do work or study, especially not in group settings. While it was a pretty quiet space that could be good for studying, the seating is not the most conducive to studying. In addition to this, Filter Coffee is located at 5 points, which makes parking difficult, but that is not the company's fault, just something to note if someone decides to visit. Overall, I definitely see myself going back to Filter and highly recommend it to anyone if they around the 5 Points area for the friendly staff, great coffee, and a welcoming atmosphere. read more

Filter is a cozy shop specializing in new wave coffee. They were selling Onyx Coffee from the counter, which is a vote of confidence in my book. Any time I'm traveling, I like to try the cortado or an equivalent drink at a shop like this, and I'm happy to say Filter's would rank in the top 10, maybe top 5. The quality and freshness of the beans was obvious from the rich, thick crema on my drink and the milk was steamed just the way I like it. I was here on 01/06/24 to get a Cortado. The service was cool. The inside of the coffee shop is very casual , open space and relaxing. I sat upstairs mainly because I was curious. The upstairs space has lots of additional seating and there's board games as well. The location is very ideal but parking will likely be an issue. Depending on when you plan your visit. If you are wondering, the Cortado was okay. It did the job! I didn't order anything else but there were some pastries on display. I do believe they have other food options as well. This is one of the best coffee shops I have been to! The place is cute, staff is friendly, and the drinks were absolutely amazing! I got the iced pumpkin spice matcha and it certainly did the trick for me to get into the "fall" mood. It wasn't overly sweet and honestly very well made. I remember when this place was a Starbuck's for the longest time. Although I miss the Starbuck's very much, Filter has been doing a great job in it's place! I've been here twice now and my most recent visit was this past week. I went with my friend Mackenzie. It's downtown so we had to search for a space, but we were able to find a meter not too terribly far away. I'm a sucker for iced coffee no matter how cold it is outside. I got the iced vanilla cardamom. It was delicious! They have a lot of festive Christmas flavors too that looked intriguing. The inside is very cute. Such a lovely coffee shop that's walking distance from my research building! A friend recommended we go here a while back and I was happily surprised with how much I loved Filter. Reminded me of a place in New York. The menu offers a plentiful variety of coffees, teas and more that I had a hard time deciding what to get- it all looked so good. The seasonal gingerbread latte delivered- was spiced perfectly and extremely smooth all throughout. The extra gingerbread biscuit on the side was a nice treat as well! Baristas were extremely kind to us as we ordered:) We stayed in the downstairs sitting area, which I really loved, but having now seen pictures of the upstairs I know that I'll definitely be going back to study up there! read more

This is my favorite coffee shop in Birmingham! The staff are always very nice and helpful. Coffee is always DELICIOUS. There is indoor and outdoor seating if you don't want to take your coffee to go with some local retail items for sale inside. They have some food, but the only food item I ever ordered personally from Filter was the lemon blueberry scone and it was very good. My drink choice is usually the Caffeinated Bee with oat milk or whole milk if I don't try a seasonal selection. I order it hot, but you can also order any of their drinks iced. My husband gets them iced. They usually make cute designs in the foam for the hot coffees and I have included some pictures with this post. For coffee they have a wide selection of drinks and variations of milk products/substitutes. They also rotate some seasonal items on their menu. I really like how they don't over sweeten their beverages and the coffee is always just the right temperature for drinking as soon as you get it. They do a punch card loyalty program so make sure to pick one up when you visit. The only issue to note, is that parking in five points (the area where Filter is located) is not great. I work a couple blocks away so I just walk so this hasn't been an issue for me, but depending on the time/day parking can be tricky. Overall excellent local coffee shop. Atmosphere: The inside of Filter is very clean, and there is a decent amount of space for working or meeting with colleagues. When we went on a Wednesday afternoon, the place was on the quieter side, but there were people working and studying. Service: We were slightly put off by the service. We tried asking for coffee bean recommendations based on our tastes but received a rather condescending answer that was not helpful. They also only had 1 of their 3 pour over options available at the time. Food: We ended up ordering an Iced Cereal Milk Latte (Cinnamon Toast Crunch) and an Italian Affogato. The cereal milk latte tasted very watered down and did not really resemble cereal or coffee. The affogato was decent with the strong espresso contrasting the sweet vanilla ice cream. Overall: Filter is an aesthetically pleasing cafe with disappointing coffee and service. At its price point, we expected a higher quality experience and would only come back for the environment rather than for the drinks. read more

This is a nice little coffee shop in 5 Points. It has outside and inside seating (the not so secret second floor is wonderful to get work done!). There are times where they get busy it gets a little hectic, but overall I have always had great customer service. It seems like sometimes they are short staffed, but I don't mind the wait. My favorite is the Salted Butterscotch! It is so good!! If you like not too sweet specially coffee, this is the place. They also get fresh bagels from a local company and they are so good. Hmmm they seem to drown the tea lattes in your milk of choosing. The drinks were barely flavored with these so called "house made syrups." Our total was $21 and we only got two drinks and a muffin. Truly ridiculous how much they are charging for barely flavored drinks. I suppose they're trying to be healthy but I'm simply not buying it. I could barely taste the chai in the chai latte. Came here to chat with a friend on a random Thursday night. We were greeted when we walked in and the man at the counter was really cool and we chatted for a few minutes and ask for recommendations. The shop is relatively small, has a couple pastries for sale but nothing that big from what I saw, and has a cool upstairs with board games and a great vibe. The drink: I decided to go with the chai latte and was not disappointed whatsoever! Perfectly spicy with a hint of milk just how I like my chai. I look forward to coming back and trying more drinks. My friend got the caffeinated bee and he said it was also great. The service: The man behind the counter recommended the Chai latte and the caffeinated bee as the two most popular drinks ordered, he made them pretty quick and that was that! Overall, I really enjoyed this spot but do wish it had some bigger pastries to lure me in more often. Upstairs is usual pretty quite and a great place to study and catch up on work. The coffee is incredible! And despite anyone's love for Starbuck's, I am really happy to have a locally owned coffee shop instead. The prices are extremely reasonable. And they have some incredible pastries too. This place seems to be doing a great job of filling the void left in 5 points by the closure of the Starbucks which previously occupied this space. And while I do enjoy Starbucks, I'm always happier to see a local kind of place that's serving up something besides the latest peppermint this or white chocolate that in a big plastic cup. If you like espresso, and you don't want 20oz of milk and a blob of syrup in your drink, then Filter has exactly what you need. Not a whole lot of gimmicks, just good, fresh, strong coffee to get you moving without a lot of unnecessary hoopla. The space is nice and open, functional yet minimalist, and they have additional seating upstairs. They have a variety of items from local artists, etc, for sale around the entrance. They've got mugs, beans, and all the other things you might need to suit your coffee chugging and or brewing needs. They've got a number of food options from cakes to bagels to biscotti in case you need a bite to eat. Prices aren't bad, the people are friendly, and overall it's just a nice place to stop in and spend a little time. Cute little coffee place in Downtown Birmingham. We ran across this when we were walking around on our one and only morning in Birmingham and it's a good spot to stop and get a cup of coffee and a light breakfast. They have all the usual coffee suspects with a couple of specials everyday - including the cereal milk latte my boyfriend had during our visit. I had the dirty chai (naturally) and he liked the cereal latte but thought it a little sweet. For breakfast, we shared 3 of their frittatas. A conecuh potato, a veggie, and a bacon. The bacon and veggie were by far the best and with the most flavor. It was at this point in my life that I realized, again, I can't stand Conecuh sausage. It's a sin for any self respecting Alabaman to say that (apparently) but luckily, I'm not an Alabaman. Not the fault of Filter and the hash to egg ratio was good on the frittata, so if you're into Conecuh go for it! If not, go for the other 2 flavors and some coffee and you won't be disappointed! read more

So glad this replaced the Starbucks! I like supporting local business to make 5pts areas! Filter has coffee and snacks (cookies, biscottis and cakes). They also has bags of coffee for you to take it home. The place is nice and clean. I do wish they had more sitting on the first floor to enjoy the window view and bigger tables. The table only fits one 15" laptop. So for having a cup of coffee with friends and coworkers but it's hard to work there. The parking is behind the building if you don't like meter parking. Lunch time is busy so the parking might not be available. read more
