We came here for my son's 13th birthday dinner and left really disappointed. From the start, the staff seemed visibly stressed, and unfortunately that stress spilled over onto the customers. The whole atmosphere felt rushed, tense, and honestly rude at times. We had a reservation for 4, but were seated at two separate tables with a support pole between us, making it hard to even talk to each other. A few minutes after we sat down, three actual 4-top tables opened up, so we politely asked if we could move before we had even ordered. That simple request was met with way more hostility than it should have been. They did move us, but I then overheard an older woman on staff complaining to her coworkers about the fact that we had asked. Meanwhile, over an hour later, there were still open 4-top tables, so the attitude over such a reasonable request made even less sense. What made it especially disappointing is that this was my son's birthday dinner, and the vibe was so uncomfortable that I honestly felt like I couldn't even mention it or ask them to celebrate him because we already felt like a burden just for asking to sit together as a family. The service was also painfully slow. It took about 25 minutes for someone to even take our drink order, another 20 minutes for the drinks to arrive, and after being there for an hour we still had no food. Our waters were never refilled either. Basic things like checking in on the table or refilling water shouldn't be a stretch, especially when customers are already waiting that long. When the food finally came, my wife ordered the mushroom ravioli and it just wasn't very good. I mentioned it, and there was no apology, no concern, and no offer to take it off the bill or make it right. It was just met with indifference, which pretty much summed up the whole experience. To make things worse, we could repeatedly hear staff talking badly about other customers. That alone creates a terrible atmosphere, because if they're comfortable doing that within earshot of diners, you can't help but assume they're doing the same thing about you. The frustrating part is that the food looked promising, and we came in wanting to have a nice family dinner. Instead, we spent the night feeling uncomfortable, ignored, and like we were inconveniencing the staff just by being there. For what was supposed to be a special birthday dinner, it was a huge letdown. read more

This is a great spot in Stonington and a staple of all of our trips to Deer Isle / Stonington. My gf knows the area best so planned everything but we also had my parents, grandparents and sister. The wedge salad was GREAT! Also, get the seafood chowder. Just do it. I got the ravioli with marinara sauce upon hearing that the Alfredo sauce was overpowering on the ravioli. I thought it was good, not great. Stepmom got the shell pasta special. Good but nothing to write home about. Dad got the soy/ginger halibut on top of mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables. THIS was the best entree of the night. Ambiance: I've sat outside before which I have to say is THE BEST, if your timing/weather works. Of note... they do have blankets!!! Excellent food with good attention to detail. We first went to Fin & Fern in April and had the best Clam Chowder and Cesar Salad with bacon that I've ever had. The pizza is also excellent. I've had 4 types of pizza here and every one has been great. The dough is crispy in the outside and soft and cheery on the inside with really good flavor. The toppings are top notch, and the combinations interesting. My biggest complaint is that the last 2 times that I've been, the Cesar salad and clam chowder have not been on the menu. I've tried the haddock chowder and the summer salad, and while both are good, they do not compare. I so hope to see them in the menu again soon! Also the restaurant is super cute inside. It is a very cute restaurant and it is right on the water. The staff were very friendly and observant of your needs. That's where things go down hill. The food was really bad if you don't get seafood. We had a large party of ten. Five got seafood and rated it a 4 out of 5. The others had other things and they weren't great. 4 bought a hanger steak special. Hanger steak is a really tough cut and you have to be skilled to make a good dish out of it which they had no idea how. One of us asked for well done and theirs was rarer than the people who order medium rare. When the plates made it to us the food was just warm. I would give them a pass on that as we had a party of ten but with how bad the non seafood plates were; it just stands out as a bigger failure. The other person had Alfredo and thought it was just OK. They are not a cheap restaurant either. So for the cost you would hope they would do better. Finn & Fern is set in downtown Stonington on the hillside near the isle au Hau boat dock. We made a reservation for 3 on a Sunday night the day beforehand. I highly recommend making one in advance, as they only had dinner time availability in the garden area. They have 4 areas to choose from: Main dining, upstairs, garden, and deck. Note: parking can be pretty overwhelmed in the evening so arrive a-little early for that. We were seated immediately in the garden, and it was perfect! I love that they provide you seat cushions for the benches, as well as blankets if you get too cold outside. Our server, Natalie, was very friendly, informative, and efficient. The crab cake appetizer was delicious, and the glazed halibut was the star of the show in my opinion. Here is where we had trouble: We ordered the ribeye for $37 medium-rare, came out definitely medium-well to well. Was suppose to have mashed potatoes as a substitute and came with fries. We were hesitant about sending it back, but for $37 and about a 45 minute wait for food we wanted it right. It came back, and was way undercooked/cold in the center. Natalie our server was very apologetic and understanding. We decided not to wait for another one and removed it off the tab. The other 3 meals we had were excellent, and the view was gorgeous. Fin & Fern is the best fine dining on the island. This is our second time dining here. I ordered the seafood scampi. My husband ordered the lobster. If you come to Stonington, you must try the lobster. Stonington is thee top port in lobster fishing in all of Maine and New England - fresh caught daily by local lobstermen. Fin & Fern is located right on the ocean. The view is gorgeous. The restaurant is cozy with limited indoor seating but provides outdoor seating when the weather is nice. The one down side is there is no parking. Luckily our vacation home is located within short walking distance, however, walking back up the hill with a belly full of delicious food and wine wasn't the best part of our experience. Another plus is Fin & Fern are open on Sundays when most fine dining on the island - and Blue Hill peninsula - are closed. read more

Our friends who live in Deer Isle brought us here for dinner as it's one of their favorite places. We knew it'd be good but the food and atmosphere were really outstanding. Being originally from NH and now visiting from the Philadelphia area, I had a serious jones for local seafood, so I opted for the Lobster Roll. It was a real treat, packed with a copious amount of wonderful local lobster. Ideally seasoned, it literally melted in my mouth. Fabulous! My wife loved the Seafood Pasta, and being 100% Italian, that's saying something. For dessert we shared the Whoopie Pie. I make these all the time and have tried various recipes, and I have to say theirs was the best I've ever had (other than my latest batch). The cake is very moist with a great chocolate taste and the filling has a subtle cream-cheese flavor. This is an incredible restaurant, so we weren't surprised to discover that they ran out of certain dishes by the time we ordered at 6:30 pm. read more

Excellent dinner and service across the board. It was a busy place on a June Sunday evening, so very happy we made reservations. We were seated in the small upstairs dining room that has perhaps 4 tables and a small bar that seats 4-5. It was very peaceful there with a nice view overlooking the harbor. Service by Jody was spot on and our food delivery was nicely spaced out without being rushed. We started with the crab cakes - a nice appetizer for 2 to split but you can order it as a meal portion also. They were perfectly done - crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The summer salad was awesome with crisp greens, pickled blueberries, toasted almonds, Brie, cucumbers and tomatoes - plenty for 2 to share. Our two entrees were again delicious - a huge slab of grilled halibut with a soy ginger sauce on mashed potatoes and veggies and the lobster and crab ravioli in a pesto Alfredo sauce (a little heavy on the sauce). We didn't have the pizza, but they looked good. And no room for dessert. Cocktails were good as was the Maine white wine (surprisingly on the dry side that went well with the halibut). I went off previous reviews and ordered halibut and the seafood spaghetti. The halibut was cooked a bit too dry. Both dishes were large in size but average in taste. I just can't really pinpoint anything about the dishes that truly stood out. And for that, I don't particularly find the food here worth the $$$. We had a delightful experience dining at Fin & Fern. We were seated in the garden area at night which had beautiful lighting and a harbor view. The setting feels upscale yet laid back. The staff members are kind and accommodating, and the food and drinks were delicious and well presented. We highly recommend this restaurant. Note: I noticed other reviews that commented on the lack of parking. There is a lack of parking directly at the building due to how the downtown area is set up. However, there is lots of street parking on Main Street and public parking at the little park down the next side street. We were able to park down the road and got there with a very short walk which was much enjoyed as we were able to see many beautiful homes and the harbor along the way. read more

Definitely the best restaurant on the island!! In fact, i would say it is my favorite restaurant anywhere! The ambiance at Fin and Fern is wonderful; friendly people work there and they seem to genuinely care about the satisfaction of their customers. Since it is a relatively small place, it is crucial to have a reservation, particularly in the summer. While they serve pizza, pasta, meat, and seafood dishes, it is the halibut that is so delicious that one yearns for it between visits. Perfectly cooked, it is served with shredded vegetables atop mashed potatoes. A wonderful sauce, made with ginger and soy sauce , completes the dish. Additionally, fish and chips, scallops, and the lobster ravioli all receive rave reviews from friends and family we have dined with. Situated by the water in Stonington, Fin and Fern is in a lovely location. Patrons can choose to eat outside in the garden or on the porch, upstairs in the restaurant, or downstairs in the main dining room. The main dining room or the porch are our favorite spots. One of the perks of eating in the main dining room, though, is that the scrumptious desserts are in constant view; we heartily recommend the giant whoopee pies or the Creme brûlée. read more

We were taking the ferry to Isle au Haut and wanted to get lunch somewhere close by. Fin and Fern definitely fit the bill, just a short walk from the ferry office. We took a table overlooking the garden and harbor and perused the menu. Courtney took care of us for lunch and she was pretty great, full of information and really welcoming. They only had two beers on tap but they were both local. My husband's first choice was gone so we both got a pint of Rock Harbor Storm Surge. It was a pretty tasty IPA. Husband had a bowl of the chowder and a lobster roll. I had the house salad with beets and the bucatini carbonara. Daughter had a cheese burger and fries. It was pretty cool watching the chef go out to the garden and pick some fresh herbs for my husband's chowder - it doesn't get more local than that. My husband loved his chowder and lobster. My salad was outstanding and the pasta was pretty good too. I'm not sure about my daughter's burger but she inhaled it with no complaints. We got a couple of desserts to go to take on the ferry and the blueberry tart was really good but the carrot cake was outstanding! For a restaurant that was only open 2 weeks I think they did a bang-up job. read more

Went for dinner as we were exploring the region. First off. There's no useful parking. Had to pay up the hill and walk down. Nice day for a walk but it was a nuisance to have to pay. Wonderful server Jesse. Seemed like she was hustling. Wonderful location with views of the docks from the outdoor seating. Nice looking place. Wife got seafood ravioli in pesto. She loved the ravioli but there was literally over a cup of pesto sauce that the ravioli were drowned in. Not what was expected so she pulled them out and ate them outside the soup. The sauce was excellent. Just tons of it. I got seafood scampi and asked to add clams to it, menu says pasta is homemade so I was excited. The dish was terrible. Pasta was way over cooked and doughy. Literally 3 mussels 2 scallops and the 4 clams they added for $12. Wow. But the worst was that the sauce was so acidic. Every bite was a lemon doughball. Oh well. Ravioli was at least good. It is undoubtedly hard to run a restaurant operation during the uncertainty presented by COVID and the survivors of this in the hospitality industry are likely going to become important players. Fun & Fern in Stonington, Maine takes advantage of the fabulous seafood and other produce to implement a varied menu with something for everyone at their location close to the water. The dishes were very good and I have dined their on a couple of occasions. Whilst I would recommend the restaurant I have a couple of pieces of feedback pertaining to my particular experience to pass on; Firstly the wine and cocktail list could use a review. Some mow wine spectator rated wines perhaps or some cocktails using local botanicals - gin & tonic etc. Also the evening I dined there, of the half dozen diners half ordered fish & chips where the fish was barely warm and the chips were nearly cold. We did not complain but I do feel the challenge for restaurants is going to be when COVID lifts I would anticipate diners not taking any excuses for poor dishes or service and will vote immediately with their wallets. read more

My husband & I just closed on a home in Stonington. As a retired classically French trained chef who studied & worked in Paris & NYC, I highly recommend this restaurant. The cozy, friendly ambiance, attentive wait staff and delicious, fresh food were very much appreciated. My husband noticed that our local grocery store in Burnt Cove carries their fresh pasta, which I will definitely be purchasing! We are very grateful to have been treated so warmly by the chef/owner who was very kind to come greet us. Stonington is a truly welcoming community. This was my first visit to Fin & Fern and I cannot wait to go back. This is the latest arrival to a small island with some culinary heavy hitters like Aragosta and Acadia House Provisions. I had high expectations and they were more than met. The setting is phenomenal with outdoor sitting during Covid-19 plus indoor seating with a wonderful view of the water and lobster boats. I had some Long Cove oysters and a beet and goat cheese salad. Those are always safe bets and they were both delicious. I had the special which was a pasta with lobster and shrimp. This is 2nd time I've been to Fin & Fern. In this time of Covid, it's really great to be able to sit outside and enjoy the Stonington Working Dock. The food was fabulous and I have to recommend the Key Lime Pie for Desert. Their wine list is small but offers good bottles. I can't wait to be back here next year. read more

Driving through Stonington, and did not get into this restaurant as a walk-in and did not want to wait. It's encouraging that they were so busy, and the smell was pure Italian heaven. I'm writing this review, however, because I found their "fresh marinara sauce" and homemade fresh pasta in the local Maine section at Tradewinds in Blue Hill. Honestly, we both agreed it was the most delicious marinara sauce from a jar we've ever had. It's so fresh tasting and still needs refrigeration as it's so damn fresh (did I say fresh!) and sweet. Paired well with some local fennel sausage ( @colvardsausages). These products were so delicious that I will definitely try to eat in person at Fin&Fern next year. read more
