After reading the numerous reviews about this restaurant, I must admit I was expecting a great experience. Service wise this was the case, all wait staff were professional and knowledgable, and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. However, the food didn't live up to expectations - the first course was amazing but the rest of the degustation was rather ordinary particularly a chowder which just tasted like potato and pumpkin soup. I must point out that the quality of the ingredients was first rate, but at $169 for a degustation in a 1 hatted restaurant, I expect a true degustation, not just a 'tasting' menu which I would expect at a regular mid-priced restaurant. All said - this restaurant is worth a look, but stick to the regular menu and avoid the degustation. read more

Had an amazing dining experience. We went the a la carte and we're not disappointed. They happily swapped the mushrooms (for my finicky husband) to the peas with jamon on his classic steak. I had the chili as anything and they were not exaggerating. King prawns and fish were spicy but the spice did not overpower. Once again amazing cocktails. Also, for a super sensitive coeliac they did not disappoint and the meal was 100% gluten free Definitely recommend. read more

Okay let's get one thing clear. The picture of the chef's signature dish, the cataplana. on this restaurant 's web site is a serving suggestion only and is very inaccurate based on my recent experience. My goodness, the bug in their picture is at least three times the size of the risible single offering that was in our cataplana. And wow, scallops in the shell. Didn't see those. So the purpose of this photo gallery is what? This restaurant screams 'portion control' so loudly, you can't hear yourself think. In fact, apparently, they will tell you the exact weight to the gram the chef prides himself on serving if you have the temerity to provide feedback, when asked, that the fish serving seems a little small for $40+. Not that I would bother saying it, but that was what an acquaintance shared about their experience there previously. Yes, ask the customers what they think, and then argue with them! Then there is the locavore schtick. They had to back off on that one when we were there. Big song and dance and apologies, but they were offering some very nice red emperor from up North. Personally, I was glad, as the local fisherpersons would not have to go out in the 20 knot plus gale in order to line catch in order to maintain the restaurant's virtue. No wine other than sherry by the glass, so responsible drinking was not an option for two people. A cataplana, which is a Portuguese fish stew cooked in the cooking vessel of the same name, must be a little tricky thing to cook, as timing is everything with so many different ingredients. So one piece of cuttlefish was tender and the other was tough. But the dish tasted very nice, saffron being the dominant ingredient, and there was a half a slice of bread each to soak up the juices. Instead of the usual 'How is it?' from the waitress we were asked the rather surprising and intimidating, 'How were the flavours." Not sure how I supposed to respond to that. Was I supposed to offer an assessment or an analysis. Is this the sort of question they ask on Master Chef or something? It is also the kind of place where you have to ask questions to find out whether you will be served a balanced meal or whether you have to construct one for your self. Sod's Law states that if you order a side of vegetables the mains will have stacks of veggies already. In this case the waitress actively discouraged us from ordering some greens as there were some potatoes in the cataplana. Sod's Law in reverse. Desserts, which were excellent, became a necessity. Overall, a bit like playing a set with Roger Federer. You are meant to be grateful for the experience, even if you lose. read more

Had the steak and oysters as a appetizer. The food was good but not really what I expected . Had good service but felt like it was overpriced! read more
We spent a lovely evening at this restaurant enjoying their tasting menu with wine pairings. We had a little hiccup at the beginning with a badly chipped glass but felt that the bartender had tried his best to remedy it. The six-course tasting menu was excellent although if you don't have a large appetite, it is good to be with other diners who can manage to finish your leftovers! The space is lovely and residents of Kingscliff (of which I shall soon be one) should be pleased to have such a good restaurant in their locale. read more

I have been trying to remember the last time I was so completely disappointed by a dining experience and to be be honest I can't. I really believed that with the increased social awareness of good food, prepared well, there was an overall increase in the quality of food served to us ( the public). I was mistaken. My husband and I made a late booking, granted we hadn't phoned in advance however the whole strip has restaurants that take walk ins so we weren't at all worried. we were told that it was busy but if we came back at a specific time we would be seated. when we arrived back 2 and a half hours later at the designated time we still had to wait a further 15 mins to be seated in the "pop up" area. The "pop up" area is actually the area next to the kitchen and Bar and as you can expect we were privvy to arguments and conflicts traditional to busy kitchens everywhere. still, it was not a pleasant way to begin a meal. oh did I mention that the pop up area was actually bench tables that we shared with complete strangers? ?? well the menu we were given was a tapas menu and we had to try and catch a wait staff member to even get a look in of the other menu. This is what we would have expected if we were going to a tapas restaurant. Fins is not a Tapas restaurant. As you can imagine the time ticking away and both my husband and I are getting a little bit hungry, by the time we are settled and have the menu in front of us it was 8:50pm. Too late to find somewhere else. I guess that's what I am most annoyed by. If they couldn't serve as well they shouldn't have given us a table at all. It then took a further 15 minutes for our order to be taken. I have to add that the waitress that first recieved us was quite plainly rushed off her feet and looking rather harassed. None the less she wasn't particularly pleasant to talk to anyway. The food came out slowly and was boring. So very boring. Not particularly tasty, and completely average in every way. Our drink order also took its time and in the end we had to ask after it. I am so completely disappointed by Fins. read more
