Oh and don't forget the Nightman, who frequents the wee hours of Sunday morning and seems to gravetate towards College radio and sound collage from the "golden age" of college radio. Radio 4 is a comfort, a companion, a guide in the confusion and chaos of modern life. You do have to be a savvy listener- im not sugguesting you go overboard with "gardener's question hour" here, but from Melvyn Bragg's exceptionally erudite "in our time," to women's hour's divinely entertaining david copperfield dramatization, to Ned Sherrin's viciously witty music quiz, BBC4 is my virgil. Anyway, I cant express the satisfaction of knowing "the streets" a year before it even came to the US.. all thanks to XFM, my favorite alternative London radio station. A mix of indie, rock, grime, hip-hop, xfm does a reasonably good job of keeping you on your toes with the London music scene. Plus, since it's a commercial station, you get to keep up to date on London radio advertisements, for things like tesco, or obeying the speed limit, which is kind of fun.
