Friendly service. In the really cute market so you can get coffee in the same building :) I got a focaccia and chocolate chip cookie and a local tonic water. This is the place to be. I came by for a later lunch and found all the sandwiches to be unavailable. I opted for the salmon chowder and monkey bread. The chowder was amazing and so delicious. The money bread was also lovely, pulling apart very easily. My friend and I stopped by again the next morning. We got there much earlier and sandwiches were still available. I opted for a pastry again and found it equally pleasant. It can get super busy there and even if you're in line and the cutoff time for breakfast sandwich comes up while you're in the queue, then you're out of luck. The cafe in the plant shop and juicery in the small grocery shop offer beverage options to complement the bakery. There's outdoor seating as well. It's a popular spot. read more

A wonderful (and very busy) big-city bakery in small-town Anchorage; it's probably the best bakery this far north in the United States. But the prices are wild - very, very high, likely due to its remote location and challenges getting any ingredient this far out of the way. I went with a salami and pepper croissant (a nice, savory treat) and a peanut butter cookie sandwich (two cookies with a peanut butter filling). I'll probably be back tomorrow. A great little bakery in Anchorage! I had time to waste before my 11AM tour so I stopped by Fire Island to have breakfast. I ordered what I think they called the "Messy Egg Breakfast Sandwich" which had avocado in it for $14. It was so good and had bits of dill in it. A small coffee was $3. I sat at one of the tables looking at my bear photos from the day before while enjoying my sandwich + coffee. All the baked items smelled so good! I liked the open kitchen concept - you could see them decorating cakes, rolling out bread, making focaccia etc. They had a good amount of tables to sit at both inside and outside. I enjoy going to bakeries so I had to drop by when I saw that there was one nearby. Customer service: friendly and quick service as the lines can get long during peak times. Baked goods: The bread is baked fresh daily it seems. The croissants are huge and delicious even if eaten the next day. I bet it tastes better on the same day and warmed. Stopped in for a scone and coffee. The Alaska berry scone was loaded with amazing flavors. The scone was baked well but the center was a touch stodgy inside. I suspect it was from so many berries adding moisture when baking. I'll take a stodgy scone over a dry crumbling one any day. The scone crust was perfect and the flavors were on point. The coffee was a solid low acidic basic drip coffee. I'm in town for the week and plan to go every morning for my coffee and breakfast. It's a very well done bake shop and I'm looking forward to enjoying several items during my stay in town. Round two was the Salmon Chowder and a ginger pear scone. The chowder was delicious and offered a chance to try their breads. I wish I lived here as I don't have access to a good let alone amazing bakery. The bread was perfection. Absolutely loved this find! It was a very active place with lots of foot traffic. Everything smelled amazing and you could see the bakery activity creating more deliciousness! I was pleasantly surprised to find the challah knot warm even at 2pm when they close at 4. If you come earlier in the day I am told they have more of a selection but they definitely had many options to choose from. The scone was the perfect blend of sweetness but not too sweet that is tastes like a cookie/muffin. So glad we happened upon this in my Yelp search. I've come here a couple times, first for their classic croissant, the second for the pain au chocolat. Although I'm no expert and it could very well supposed to be that way, I wish the pain au chocolat had more chocolate. I got maybe 10 very small pieces (no larger than a couple chocolate chips, if that) of chocolate just in the bottom of the croissant and that was it. But the croissant was BEAUTIFUL! The exterior was a beautiful golden brown with a slight crunch, the interior was a soft, buttery, flakey texture that melts in your mouth. Truly impressive! New location, same busted process. The food at Fire Island is fantastic, I don't think anyone in Anchorage would disagree. Their setup/process is horrendous. They've moved to a new building and kept the same inefficient setup they had at the old location. Here's how it works: 1) Stand in line. 2) Look at a menu board. 3) Get up to where you can see what they have. 4) You order your first choice, they are out of it. You order your second choice, they are out of it. You struggle and just panic-point at something they do have because you don't want to be a part of the problem and add to the line...that is created by the wildy inaccurate menu board. Either FIX YOUR MENU BOARD or REMOVE IT. It's ridiculous. Y'all are always out of everything, the menu board is a joke. Forcing customers to quickly survey all baked goods right at the register is customer-hostile and contributes to your long lines. The phantom-food disappointment is so bad, that I have stopped my routine of going here once a week. Tired of them never having any sandwiches, and eating cookies for breakfast instead. read more

This bakery is about 15min walk from the center of downtown Anchorage. I ordered a seasonal cupcake: strawberry shortcake for $6, Ham and Swiss croissant and monkey bread. The cupcake was really good. It was not too sweet and it was not made of regular sponge cake, but more like dense angel cake....Chewy in a good way.
