We were craving a sweet treat near West Loop and came to Firecakes because of the sheer volume of reviews from Yelp. It's a small walk-in and walk out shop but that's all you need (: Employees were so sweet and kind. There are some cool flavors offered, but I was expecting there to be a larger selection. We got the pistachio old fashioned, horchata and dulce de leche. Surprisingly the pistachio old fashioned donut was both of our favorites! There's not a strong pistachio flavor, but I would recommend trying it! Loved the old fashioned texture. I did not like the horchata filling so I'd pass on that. Donuts were good, but I think it's a little overhyped.

A tiny walk in donut shop that packs a punch with so many donut options to choose from. I ended up getting chocolate, pistachio and churro donut as well as a red velvet cookie. It was quick to order early in the morning and I took the donuts all the way back to Boston. They were still good the day after, just a little smushed frosting. The red velvet cookie was my favorite as the cream cheese filling was sweet and the cookie was soft. They also do ice cream sandwiches and coffee which makes this place have something for everyone. Overall, a nice place to pop in if you're in the area.

    So many choices!

The items here that we picked up after lunch were amazing. It was a small store for take out. We picked a horchata donut, a chocolate with white chocolate cookie, and an old fashioned donut. One man in front of us does food tours and this is his last stop of his tour, so he came to try the specialty donut, the margarita. Honestly, I wanted to try so many of the items here, but I had just eaten a heavy lunch and tried to contain my joy. My son says if we lived here, he would come daily. They also sell coffees as well which we did not get.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Firehouse Donuts is a classic, no-frills donuts done right atmosphere. It has that old-school neighborhood feel--simple, welcoming, and focused on goodness.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The donuts are fresh, soft, and perfectly sweet. You really can't go wrong with anything here. We ordered the Carrot Cake and Boston Cream, which were delicious. Service was quick and friendly. It's an easy go-to spot when you're craving a solid, satisfying donut.

A couple of colleagues and I were here on business, it was my birthday, and we went out to dinner, but they were no desserts that seemed suitable to celebrate the occasion. One of the guys on the team recommended firecakes because he had been here in the past and thought they were awesome. I'm super glad that I agreed to give it a shot. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's not a sitdown place, it's a place where you grab a doughnut and go for a walk.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] She had just put out a tray of apple cider donuts, and chocolate frosted. I was super excited because I love a good apple cider donut, especially in the fall. Needless to say it did not disappoint and to be honest, I wish I had ordered two of them. Sadly, I'll be leaving in the morning for a flight so early I can't even get one for breakfast. I have already booked marked this location so I can return on future visits. To anyone looking for an awesome snack, breakfast, or just something awesomely delicious -- this is your place !!

These doughnuts were absolutely delicious, soft, fresh, and perfectly sweet. Every bite was light and fluffy with just the right amount of glaze. A simple treat done right and totally worth the indulgence.

The donuts were stale. The coffee was fine. The lady that helped us was pretty darn abrupt. When we got there (during business hours right before 11am) and there was a sign that they had stepped away. Maybe this is a one man show and that's why she was so unhappy. All in all, not impressed.

Great donuts with a nice selection of flavors! It's a tiny shop but they still have a lot of options to choose from and make delicious donuts, especially for a popular chain. The donuts are fluffy and taste fresh. I went with the valhrona chocolate frosted and the coconut cake donut and both were great! The chocolate frosting is very rich and decadent and not too sweet- yum! The staff member was friendly as well! Love that they are open later than other shops to help satisfy the evening donut craving!

Second stop on donut tour downtown Chicago. I've always been a fan of Firecakes and they are my fav around here. As the tour guide was explaining something about the history of Firecakes cooking donuts over a fire and some family picture on the wall, my mind wandered off to thinking about how awesome these donuts were going to be! Here are my thoughts about this place: 1. Prices range between $3.55-$6.45. 2. Some delicious creative donuts are offered daily. 3. Donuts taste like made with fresh ingredients.

We decided to grab a quick bite and ended up walking to Firecakes Donuts. Even though the shop is small, they still offer a great variety to choose from. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Unfortunately, there isn't any seating available inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Probably the only dessert I really had in Chicago, but well-worth. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I came by around 7am and thought it was closed, because I didn't see anyone inside; they were actually in the back cranking out more donuts. They're open at 6:30 on most days -- great for a morning pick-me-up![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The shop itself is rather small, with limited to no seating, so it's really more of a grab-and-go stop.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] These were one of the fluffiest donuts with unique and indulgent flavors. Most donuts ranged from $3.25-$7, depending on their ingredients and labor. I ordered four, which I'll rank in the order of preference: 1. RASPBERRY LINZER TART: Tastes exactly like a raspberry linzer cookie, but fluffier. Absolutely loved this!! 2. RASPBERRY BLOOD ORANGE JELLY: Loved the flavor of the jelly in this. It's definitely deeper in flavor compared to a normal jelly donut. Also enjoyed how I got an adequate amount of jelly in each bite. 3. BLUEBERRY CAKE: The donut itself tasted like an elevated Dunkin' Donuts blueberry -- less dense and more fluffy. The whipped frosting on top was also very light and airy. 4. PISTACHIO OLD FASHIONED: They're supposed to be famous for the pistachio donut, but I felt like the pistachio flavor wasn't prominent enough. This just tasted like a normal fritter to me. Easily some of the best donuts I've ever had. The texture and quality of ingredients are distinctive features that set these apart from regular donuts. Highly recommend!

Their pistachio old fashioned donuts are out of this world and quite addictive. So happy I got two cause they were so good I couldn't stop at one. Texturally great with the pistachio crunch and the crunchy fried texture of the donut itself. They're topped with this overtly green glaze which brings the pistachio flavor front and center. They had a mix of donuts to choose from so definitely a great choice if you like trying new flavors.

Went on the Chicago walking donut tour. This was the second stop. Since it was a tour we didn't experience the service our guide took care of the samples. The vanilla donut with the vanilla beads were delicious- so apparently they won a competition award for the vanilla frosting. It was light and delicious. The Dulce donut was Caramel flavored and not too sweet. They are opened late so it is a great place for an evening treat as well as breakfast. This is definitely a must try when you are in Chicago. They also do a donut ice cream sandwich- go hungry or with a few friends and share!!

Their to-go window is so cute!

Ask the Community - Firecakes Donuts

Is there a place to sit down inside?

There's an outside seating area but no place inside to sit

    Do they make vegan donuts?

Yes, double chocolate coconut. I personally/typically stray away from coconut; however the chocolate and consistency of the dough itself is amazing. This just has the shavings on top that help balance it all out

    Any vegan options?

Yes, they have a few options which are clearly labeled in the display case when available.

Do they offer any gluten free donuts?

They offer one gluten free/vegan option. Per the website, they are a rotating/seasonal option, so I'd give them a quick call and verify.

Is there still a good selection late at night?

Yeah I think so. They always got my pistachio. Shit is great!

Pulled up just before 6:30 AM on a weekday and there were just a few folks ahead of us in line, but service is quick. Cake donuts were actually pretty solid here; the Blueberry Cake Donut was the best item, super soft and moist with a good amount of berries throughout. The Pistachio Cake Donut for some reason was texturally firmer and drier than the other. Unfortunately, the fried donuts were all misses. The dough was just really dense and none of the toppings really hit. The Glazed Donut just made me sad that the dough was bad and the bacon on the Maple Bacon Donut wasn't crispy, so you got a cold, chewy, greasy bite that wasn't super pleasant. The chopped dough pieces in the Apple Fritter were also oddly firm instead of soft. For a place with rave reviews, I was pretty bummed by the donuts, but maybe the fried chicken sandwich is where it's at.

Recommended some items to us and after hearing we were on a donut tour, even threw in a freebie. Only outdoor seating available, but the weather was perfectly lovely. Everything led up to (finally) some lovely, super soft fluffy fried donuts. Glazed Donut and Strawberry Glazed Donut were exactly the pillowy, yeasted texture I was looking for and the latter even had a little extra tartness from the strawberries, which you could tell was made from real fruit! The Lemon Poppyseed Cake Donut ended up being a banger as well; great balance between sweet and sour, not dry at all, and cross between crumbly and a melt in your mouth texture. The Apple Fritter was the only miss. Had an odd aftertaste that almost reminded me of curry powder and was texturally super hard, like bits of cardboard.
