32 Minutes. It took 32 minutes from the time I ordered and sat down to get my food. I actually didn't even realize, either, until someone who had been sitting down before me went up to the counter to ask where their food was. Then I noticed. I used to come here years ago and it was always pretty consistently good and fast, even at lunch rush. I came after around 2:10, and there were four people behind the counter all, what seemed like, making sandwiches. I guess it was all a clever ruse (We're using ruse now, guys, we're bringing that word back). The food was still good but for that kinda wait I should have just gone to Hopdoddy's. Hopefully things improve and I just went on a weird off day. I'll be back again to see cause I'm nice like that, and will update the review then. .... Both soap dispensers in restroom were OUT. Walked by the drink / utensil station, 2 forks just sitting on mat. Noted 5 employees, went unnoticed for 10 minutes, which is how long I waited when there were NO persons in front of me. I'm used to ordering AWAY from the cash register, or at least at other locations in which I've eaten. Floors are unswept, there are crumbs everywhere and the counter where you lookover to see employees work was not wiped or cleaned. 2 employees just chatting it up in the back, eventually one left (killing time ?), and also was right past the utensils on the ground. Saw a little too much tattoo ink, and for being 1 in the afternoon, this place was depressing. I can't blame them for my chips being stale, the sandwich was alright. Tuesday February 23rd 2016, after waiting in line for 10 minutes, which I don't mind but the cashier is beyond rude. Customers went to the counter and asked for lids. And the cashier yelled that she didn't have time to go and do that. Then you could hear the manager over everybody saying that is "not important right now". Im guessing she was the manager but she was attempting to control the already horrible employees by yelling at them the whole time. Most of us were on break and that's the last thing we want to listen to! I'm really torn. Should I give Firehouse Subs 3 or 4 stars? I was really looking forward to trying this place out. Yelpers, as well as my non-Yelping friends (I Still hold on to a few of those) really talked this place up. I was told to order the "Hook and Ladder", but I opted for the "Creole Beef" sub, being a total slave to the Power of Beef. Perhaps that decision may have led to my disappointment, but I think not. The sub was absolutely delicious. The beef was flavorful, it had the melty cheese I love, the gravy sogginess I crave, everything I look for in a beefy sub. I ordered a combo--chips & drink--for $8.75. It would've been perfect, except for when they brought out my meal, I looked down and gave a complete WTF... The sub was tiny! It was diminutive, miniscule--any underwhelming word you can think of to convey the smallness of this sandwich. It was also placed alone on a larger serving basket that accentuated its teenyness. What a let-down! I finished this delicious sub in about 5 or 6 bites. I just felt kinda ripped-off and let down... As I drove back to work, I passed a McDonald's and seriously thought about grabbing a dollar burger or two. I just don't like paying almost nine bucks for a sandwich and still feeling hungry after I leave. I can't reward that with 5 stars. But the sandwich was really good. the place was cool. I liked the menu, and the hot sauce collection, and the place was clean, and I really really wanna like this place... Since Yelp won't let us do half-stars, I'll put up 4, but it's really a 3 1/2. Their sandwiches are very average. Employees are friendly. Nothing spectacular, but they do love firemen. I just don't see what sets this place apart, other than the firemen schtick. I like firemen too, but not enough to justify putting this on my regular lunch rotation. I agree with Angelica S., maybe if hot shirtless firemen let me eat my sandwich off their rock hard abs I would be more inclined to eat here again. I would like to officially state that my rating is currently 3.5 stars. But I only had one sandwich so far - the meatball. The sandwich was good but nothing for me to write home about. Maybe I have been spoiled by really good meatball subs cause this was definitely good, just not crave-worthy. The guys working there were sweet and friendly and you can't say it had to do with me being a cute girl because I came in sweaty and gross after a long run. The best part is that I order a combo with a cookie and then the manager gave me a free brownie too for it being my first time there. So I left with a cookie and a brownie! ...And a meatball sub. First time ever eating at a Firehouse Subs... Peers kept telling me to try it out and I finally had the motivation to do so for lunch yesterday. A co-worker and myself ordered our food online. Waited around to pick it up for the allotted time and actually got there a little late so I was expecting my food to be waiting for me. It was not done so I sat down. I got nothing but apologies from several employees and they ended up giving me my meal for free since it was not complete by the time I got there. I didn't mind waiting around for a couple of minutes and even tried to pay them several times since I felt bad. They simply would NOT let me and kept extending apologies. Was in the area for lunch, had been to a Firehouse Subs before and it was pretty good, so got the Italian hot sub. The order was fairly quick and they delivered our sandwiches to our table. It just wasn't that good, I had previously had the hook and ladder sub, that was better, but if i want a Italian sub, i would probably get one from Jimmy Johns. Doesn't mean all their food is not that good, but just think they could do better at the Italian. read more

The layout issues during the lunch hour have been covered elsewhere. That being said, they're REALLY annoying. Still, that could be forgiven if the food were a better value for cost. The subs are expensive, and, while okay, aren't worthy of that price point IMHO. Plus I cannot stand having "WELCOME TO FIREHOUSE" bellowed out, in bad syncopation, everytime the door opens to admit a new patron. The subs are amazing! I stopped going to Subway after trying this place out a few months ago. It's more of a guy type of place, but who cares? There's plenty of sauces to choose from and if I do remember correctly, they're numbered to show you the severity of the hot sauces. It's more expensive than Subway, but I don't mind paying a few extra dollars since this place is one of the few places where I can actually enjoy my food due to the quietness and nice staff. read more

Been to this location a few times and wasn't entirely happy with the last visit. Ordered the steak and cheese sub which is my go to order. It was around lunch time which I will give them the benefit of the doubt. They gave me my cup to fill my beverage and not only was there no tea available but you couldn't get anything out of the coke freestyle machine. The place was pretty dirty like no one had been cleaning. Pretty much all of their chip selection was gone with empty racks. I will say the sandwich was delicious as always so that is the reason for the 3 stars. The manager there also does a great job! Not sure of his name but he wasn't getting much help! read more

Unique, good portions for the price, lots of hot sauces, friendly staff. This place is tasty and has lots of sub choices. I put A&M and UT sauce on the same sandwich (I was later secretly shunned by UT students. Too much food for my hunger level, but it made good leftovers. Hot subs really bring out the flavor. Horrible experience! Stood in line while Justin T decided to check Facebook. After 5 minutes and two awkward eye contacts he finally asked if we were ready to order and that he was waiting on us. While ordering, he decided it'd be ok to answer his cell phone not once but twice the second time telling his "babe" to hold on real quick. Another employee was walking the floor while on a personal cell phone on a personal non-urgent phone call. Cell phone use clearly not prohibited at this location. I got the hook and ladder sub and felt it was a good choice, for being around $5.99. The meat was tender and it went together well with the cheese, mayo, and lettuce. The staff was nice enough. Maybe the worst service I have experienced in Austin. Walk in, and there are people seated at every table. Cool, not a big deal. Go to get in line. Soda machine is overflowing with melted ice and water running out. Soggy straws still in their wrapping and trash overflowing. Regardless, I still order my sandwich and sit at the table to wait. And wait.. And wait... The crazy thing is, it wasn't just my sandwich. The place was filled, but I don't think I saw a sub on anyone's table! Just a bunch of to go orders they decided to make. I tried to wait long enough so I didn't have to ask for a refund, even after watching about 5 people do it before me. Unfortunately, the 30 minute mark for a sub was too much. I ask for a refund, and am finally given it to me after I waited for the GM to stop running back and forth aimlessly. At least I thought! Ran the wrong return, had to go back in to get my card refunded, AND had to listen to this GM tell me it was my fault saying I told him the wrong name?! My first visit to Firehouse Subs couldn't have been better. I ordered the Steak and Cheese but couldn't decide on the second. Young John(?) suggested the the Turkey Bacon Ranch. Best turkey sandwich ever! A couple of weeks later, I returned. I asked to speak to a manager. Manager wasn't yet on duty but he stepped behind the counter to help me. I wanted to fill out a comment card but they were out. The staff kept asking what they could do to help. I finally gave up and just started telling the manager of my first visit, how happy I was with how good my subs were and so on, then indicated the young man that had helped before. Staff laughed and said they thought it might be a bad thing. After I ordered my 2 subs, while waxing poetic about my satisfaction, the manager comped my subs. I couldn't believe it! I told him a free meal was not on my mind, that I just wanted to give due credit where it was deserved. Told him I was going to write a review on Yelp after my broken wrist healed. Staff is friendly and well versed about their menu and are happy to make suggestions if you can't make a choice In fact, I can't recall when I've encountered better. The restaurant was clean and busy. It takes just a short time to get one of the best subs around. Move over, Jason's. Firehouse Subs actually have flavor! A lot of it! I eat at the Firehouse Subs on McNeil in Austin Texas quite often, and it's delicious... It really is. The other day, however, I went to the one on Burnet, and it was a horrible experience, comparatively speaking. The soup was cold, the sandwich soggy, the tomatoes were wet and old, and we waited over 15 min for our food. I wasn't expecting this, because the other Firehouse on Mcneil is truly amazing, and from the outside, this appeared to be the same place. If there would have been a sign on the Burnet location's door saying something to the effect of, "CAUTION: We realize this appears ostensibly to be a normal Firehouse, but please do not get your hopes up. The food and service at this particular location is actually really poor," I would have been fine with the outcome. It just caught me off guard that's all I'm saying. read more

Excellent subs, really good (the difference is that they STEAM them). Like was noted earlier, I was a bit put off by the yelling when you enter the restaurant. Sure, it's a minor thing, but it's an irritating gimmick that smacks less of genuine hourly-wage sandwich making spirit and more of the fake folksy BS crap that I have to learn back in my retail days.
