It is one of the oldest continuous congregations in South Carolina and the church building is one of the oldest churches in continuous service in South Carolina. The marker reads, "Prince George's Parish Church, Winyah. Prince George's Parish, Winyah, was created March 10, 1721, and the parish church erected on Black River, 1726, at the present Brown's Ferry. After Prince Frederick's Parish was formed from Prince George's, April 9, 1734, the parish church was erected here, 1737-1750. The tower and chancel were added in 1824." The marker was erected in 1941 by the Georgetown Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. I did not have an opportunity to tour the church today. Perhaps in the future. This review will be biased as we've been a part the Refuge Church Murrells Inlet since nearly their…read moreinception 8 years ago. However, this was always our "vacation church" until moving back to Murrells Inlet last year. When we got our place in Murrells Inlet, we set out to find a good church home that we could be a part of while at the Beach. We didn't have anything particularly in mind other than a solid statement of beliefs and a clear reflection of the heart of Jesus in its people. We initially found Refuge Murrells Inlet driving by on Murrells Inlet Rd. and decided it would be our next shot at finding a good church. From the moment my wife and I walked in, we felt welcomed by the pastoral staff and the warm and friendly church family. For myself, one of the things that sets the Refuge Church Murrells Inlet apart is their genuine love for each other and the Murrells Inlet community. It truly shows in how they choose to spend time together, either serving the community, at church events, or just as friends celebrating a birthday or gathering to watch a game. This was evident even from our first visit and continues today. A separate shout out for Pastor Benji, who made us feel like the Refuge Murrells Inlet was always our church home - even though we lived elsewhere and watched online. Through those years, Benji was faithful to stay connected, pray for us, and "welcome us home" each time we returned. Benji demonstrates real agape love and the church family at the Refuge Murrells Inlet do the same. The messages are enduringly positive but always challenging. I never leave feeling beat down but always feel motivated to chase after Jesus more. Pastor Benji (and Pastor Shawn) deliver the truth in love in a way that is approachable, authentic, and clear. Sometimes sermons are delivered in series, individually, or a few months will be spent unpacking a book of the Bible, chapter-by-chapter. Jesus is on full display, with Christ-centered and Spirit-led worship and messages. I won't comment on the music ministry because I serve on the team and don't want to be overly biased BUT I love our team and seeing what God is doing in the worship ministry. Folks serve passionately and push themselves for constant growth in Christ, and musically. The church family joyfully participates in worship and feels engaged. I could go on and on mentioning the other ministries and each of the wonderful folks and how they authentically play a role in the church family. Set back from Wood Street beneath a canopy of mature trees, the church presents a dignified brick…read morefaçade with a central gable and twin entrance towers. The symmetry is classic, but the details reward closer inspection. Each tower is capped with a pyramidal roof and features narrow, arched windows that echo the sanctuary's larger stained-glass panels. These windows are framed in a simple stone trim. The sanctuary itself is built on a raised foundation, with a modest flight of steps leading to double doors beneath a pointed arch. The brickwork is clean and uniform, with subtle corbeling along the roofline and around the tower bases. A cornerstone is set low on the front wall, anchoring the structure both physically and symbolically. The marker out front reads, "Organized shortly after the Civil War with Rev. Edward Rhue as its first pastor, Bethesda Baptist Church purchased this site by 1867. Construction of this sanctuary began in 1922 during the pastorate of Rev. A.W. Puller and was completed and dedicated during the pastorate of Rev. G. Going Daniels in 1927. Rev. W.A. Johnson served as Bethesda's pastor from 1956 until his death in 1995." It is marker number 22-40 and it was erected in 1996 by the Georgetown Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta. The building was locked and secured on the Sunday afternoon I visited. We were not here to attend services but to visit the Jewish cemetery across the way. But on the way…read moreback from that, I was drawn to this magnificent church and the marker in front that provides much context. The marker reads, "This African Methodist Episcopal Church was the first separate black church in Georgetown County. It was established by the Rev. A.T. Carr shortly after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation which freed the slaves. The church purchased this property Jan. 15, 1866, and remodeled the present building in 1908 when the Rev. R.W. Mance was minister. The educational building was built in 1949 under the pastorate of Rev. H.B. Butler, Jr." It is marker number 22-22 and it was erected in 1986 by the Georgetown Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. An interesting tidbit.
