I came to see one of the 20+ public murals depicting PG history that have populated PG in the recovery years since 2004 Hurricane Charley. That storm would give anyone religion. So I drove and walked all around downtown, and summarily decided that this mural showing the history of the Florida Sacred Heart by self-taught women artists is my favorite. It's best seen in person, because photos don't do it justice. Someday I'd like to meet the artists. One signed "Magda," but the City fathers printed the plaque with "Maggie." Hopefully, Magda goes by Maggie here at church. Otherwise, it's a committee's version of Ellis Island for artists with not-so-Anglo names. This work is not just slathered on the side of a building. The 2008 design puts the sky up there with the sky, and the birds are walking on sand where the grass on the design springs from the actual pavement. Even the fire pipe that has to be on the building gets a couple of flowers that match the painted scene behind it. Inspired and inspiring.

Arrived a bit early for the 8am celebration, got to admire their stations etc. and found comfort in the familiar yet subtle differences between parishes. The most unsubtle difference were the lack of pews and kneelers- San Antonio's has individual chairs hooked together to form something resembling a pew. The lack of kneelers made perfect sense to me when I realized I was by far the youngest worshipper present. This retirement town probably has a median age of 80 and God understands that his flock may not be able to rise again after a vigorous round of Catholic calisthenics. I'm looking forward to my next visit.

I spoke with several church members about the noise level but was simply advised to wear earplugs which I personally find uncomfortable. If you are sensitive to very loud music, and don't want to wear earplugs at church, this is something to be aware of.
